Mercedes sponsors design contest around new GLK SUV

Stuttgart— This fall will see the European launch of the new Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV. With its striking design, combining the rugged form of an authentic off-roader with the archetypal styling of all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, this model is destined to set new standards in the SUV world.

To mark the launch of the new GLK, Mercedes-Benz has devised a unique design competition that extends way beyond the parameters of automotive design: “The design:project”.

Pole Position for Porsche RS Spyder in the Ardennes

Stuttgart -- The Porsche RS Spyder debut on the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit has succeeded. Jos Verstappen (Netherlands) secured his third pole position in the LMP2 class at the third round of the Le Mans Series (LMS).

Belgium’s Didier Theys qualified the 476 hp RS Spyder sports prototype fourth on the gird, Casper Elgaard (Denmark) claimed eighth starting position for the Danish Essex team.

Volkswagen Polo Cup “Double bill”: youngsters fight for mid-point title

Wolfsburg -- The first decisions in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup are coming up: at races four and five at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (16 -18 May) not only winners’ trophies are at stake, but, first and foremost, the leading positions in the overall and the rookie classifications.

The reason is that the two "mid-point champions” of the junior racing series will be able to participate in the international Volkswagen exchange programme for "motorsport students”.

Porsche at the Turkish Grand Prix: Mamerow and van Lagen share front row

Stuttgart -- Chris Mamerow (Germany) and Jaap van Lagen (Netherlands) dominated the qualifying session for the fourth round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup.

The two Damac Kadach Racing team mates secured the front row of the grid on the 5.4 kilometre Grand Prix circuit of Istanbul (Turkey). Initially, the 31-year old Dutchman turned the quickest lap in 1:57.354 minutes to top the time sheets where he remained for approximately 20 minutes.

Report: Auto Affordability Best in Six Years

DETROIT -- The purchase of an average-priced new vehicle took 23.9 weeks of median family income in the first quarter, according to the Auto Affordability Index compiled by Comerica Bank.

The latest reading is down 0.6 weeks from the fourth quarter and 1.1 weeks compared to a year ago. Including finance charges, the total cost of buying an average-priced light vehicle was $28,389 in the first quarter.

Team Mustang Member to Tell Her Story on NBC's 'Today' Show on Mother's Day

DEARBORN, Mich. -- When Ford Mustang business manager Jackie DiMarco was working on the development of the "Warriors in Pink" package for the 2008 Mustang, which was designed to raise money for breast cancer education and research, she had no idea that the project would hit so close to home.

"We were ready to roll with the 'Warriors in Pink' program in the fall of 2006, and in February of 2007, I discovered a lump in my breast that turned out to be malignant," said DiMarco, who shares her story on Sunday's NBC's "Today" show.

Chrysler gas program sparks questions, answered here

Chrysler broke the news late Monday on "Let's Refuel America", and the $2.99 per gallon price protection program seemed to have touched a national nerve.

New Ford transmission gets improved MPG

DEARBORN – Ford Motor Company is fitting the 2009 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner with the automaker’s newest, advanced 6-speed automatic transmission, further demonstrating its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy for customers.

The new 6F35 front-wheel-drive transmission offers a 4 to 6 percent improvement in fuel economy versus conventional 4- and 5-speed automatics, in addition to improved acceleration.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V breaks record on famed track

In testing this morning at Germany's Nurburgring, Cadillac's upcoming new 2009 CTS-V completed a lap of the legendary Nordschleife in 7:59.32. This blistering time appears to be the fastest ever publicly documented for a production sedan.

GM's Provides Web-Based Training for Drivers of Large Vans

DETROIT -- General Motors continues to make training available for its large van consumers. For several years, Coaching Systems LLC, which designed a unique course for GM large van consumers, has teamed up with GM to offer training at a 40 percent discount to GM’s large van consumers. This training is designed to reinforce information that may be helpful for drivers of large vans.

Coaching Systems developed this course for GM’s large van consumers, building on van driver training that started in 1991 in conjunction with the National Safety Council.

Ford launches Operation Goodwill in Arizona

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford Motor Company and the Ford Motor Company Fund announced today that they plan to invest more than $1 million in Arizona community programs and charities in 2008, an increase of more than $600,000 over last year.

The added funds are primarily from Ford Motor Company Fund, Ford’s philanthropic arm, as part of its Operation Goodwill initiative.
