New Honda hybrid will compete with Prius
Hybrid-only car, due in 2009, to be priced less than Toyota vehicle
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - A top Honda Motor Co. executive said Wednesday the company's new gas-electric hybrid will be priced lower than the Toyota Prius, its prime competitor.
The new five-door car will only be available with a hybrid powertrain. It will be smaller than Honda's Civic and also will be priced less than a hybrid gas-electric version of the Civic, said Richard Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co.
Speaking to reporters at an industry seminar in Traverse City, Colliver said the new hybrid will be launched in April 2009.

Nissan shows test models of electric car
YOKOSUKA, Japan -- Nissan showed on Wednesday a spiffy electric car packed with a battery developed by the Japanese automaker to deliver more power than the type common in today's hybrids.
The electric vehicle, set for sale in 2010, carried a 300 kilogram (660 pounds) lithium-ion battery and still zipped around a Nissan Motor Co. test course, accelerating more quickly than comparable gas-engine cars.
It was extremely quiet, absent of engine noise _ a trademark of electric vehicles. Details such as cruising range are yet to be determined, Nissan officials said.

Obama: 1M Hybrids on Road by 2015
LANSING -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Monday the nation should set a goal of putting 1 million plug-in electric hybrid vehicles on the road by 2015, offering $4 billion in federal aid to meet the ambitious goal. But auto experts said the expense of meeting such goals will far exceed that amount, and that the plug-in hybrid goal will be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve.
"I know how much the auto industry and the auto workers of this state have struggled over the last decade or so," Obama said. "But I also know where I want the fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow to be built: Not in Japan, not in China, but right here in the United States of America. Right here in the state of Michigan."

Consumers Hot for Hybrids, but Not E85
Consumers have a growing hankering for hybrids. That's according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Alternative Powertrain Study, released Tuesday, July 15. Of more than 4,000 consumers planning to buy a new vehicle in the next two years, 62 percent are considering a hybrid. That figure is up from 50 percent last year.
Customers want to know whether a hybrid will pay for itself based on their driving styles, whether they're leasing or buying, and other factors. The study found that fewer consumers this year are interested in E85 vehicles. This year, 43 percent of consumers said they were interested, down from 47 percent last year. The concern among consumers is that E85 vehicles, which can run on as much as 85 percent ethanol, may affect agricultural production.

Toyota to Add Solar Panels to Some Prius Hybrids
TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp plans to install solar panels on some Prius hybrids in its next remodeling, responding to growing demand for "green" cars amid record-high oil prices, a source briefed on the matter said on Monday.
The panels, supplied by Kyocera Corp would be able to power part of the air-conditioning on high-end versions of the gasoline-electric Prius, the source said. "It's more of a symbolic gesture," said the source, who asked not to be identified. "It's very difficult to power much more than that with solar energy."
Toyota is due to launch the third-generation Prius next year. But solar power is not seen as a viable solution to power cars. Solar panels are expensive due to rising silicon prices and storing energy is difficult, the source said. It was unknown how much the solar panels on the new Prius cars would cost, or how many solar-mounted versions Toyota would build.

Supply Woes Stall Hybrid SUVs
Hybrid SUVs are hard to come by across the country -- for a number of reasons. Ford Motor Co., which featured its Ford Escape Hybrid in TV ads alongside a singing Kermit [the Frog], can't seem to pump out enough of the compact SUVs to meet demand.
General Motors Corp. ran into troubles with the battery for last year's Saturn Vue hybrid SUVs, which has slowed production for 2008 models. The short supply is a frustration for dealers struggling with brutally slow U.S. auto sales, as well as for SUV loyalists sick of getting pinched at the pump.
Hybrid SUVs are sitting on dealer lots anywhere from 17 to 38 days on average in an industry where a 60-day turn rate is the norm, according to data from J.D. Power and Associates' Power Information Network.

Ford Waits as GM, Toyota Take Lead on Plug-In Hybrids
Ford Motor Co., under pressure to trim its reliance on trucks, said it's taking a measured approach on plug-in hybrid vehicles by letting rivals assume the risk of marketing the new technology.
"If customers aren't buying them, we're not making them," Ted Miller, Ford's senior manager of energy storage, said in an interview [last week]. "If there's going to be a true plug-in hybrid market, we're going to be there. It's just that that's a huge commitment to actually go to production."
That tack may force the world's third-largest automaker to play catch-up if plug-ins such as General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet Volt concept can be built in high volume. The chief hurdle is a rechargeable battery for extended electric-only use. GM and Toyota Motor Corp., the biggest automakers, are racing to introduce a vehicle able to recharge from household electrical sockets in 2010. Ford has a test fleet of 20 plug-in sport-utility vehicles, without a target date for selling them.

Toyota Struggles to Keep Up With Hybrid Battery Production
TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. is struggling to keep up with booming demand for hybrid vehicles because it is unable to make enough batteries that are key parts in the hit "green" cars, a senior executive said Monday.

Prius owners go plug-in with aftermarket mod
Soon drivers will be able to get at least double the gas mileage of a Toyota Prius hybrid, thanks to a spate of new aftermarket kits that convert any car into a plug-in electric vehicle. But they'll have to pay upwards of $10,000 to do so.
A123Systems, an automotive technology company and battery supplier based in Watertown, Mass., is now taking orders on its Web site for a Hymotion L5 conversion kit, which turns a Toyota Prius into a plug-in electric car. The kit works with Prius model years 2004 through 2008 and adds a special, range-extending lithium-ion battery to the Prius' existing drivetrain.

Toyota Prius -- a brand unto itself
Consider Toyota's happy problem: much like the Xerox brand became synonymous with photocopying, the Prius now equals "hybrid" in consumers' minds.
The Prius is so successful as a stand alone vehicle that Toyota is having a hard time gaining traction for their preferred brand name, Hybrid Synergy Drive, which is how they market their Camry and Highlander hybrid models.
This happy problem may lead Toyota to create new vehicles under a Prius model line, such as a wagon or two door model, according to Jim Lentz, the company's president of U.S. operations. In an Automotive News interview, Lentz said Toyota may consider new Prius models after 2010, when the existing car is due for a redesign.
This means Prius might take off as a sub-brand the way Scion has, especially if gas prices stay high enough to cement Americans' move into smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. But the Scion brand was a deliberate business move to create a new product line, whereas the Prius has taken on a life of its own -- not a bad problem to have.

Honda CEO Outlines Aggressive Hybrid Strategy
Honda CEO Takeo Fukui has outlined an aggressive hybrid strategy for the company, aiming to sell 500,000 units per year of four hybrid models by early next decade.
Honda's plan calls for a dedicated hybrid vehicle based on the design of the company's FCX Clarity hydrogen car, that will debut as a five door hatchback. Honda plans to put the new hybrid on sale next year in in Japan, North America and Europe and projects annual global sales of 200,000 units.
In addition, and this came as a bit of surprise, Honda plans to make a hybrid version of the popular Fit subcompact, as well as the CR-Z SUV. The company will also roll out a reconfigured Civic hybrid.

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download
The EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.
In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.
To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

OMAHA, Neb. -- When it comes to energy, Americans worry most about dependence on foreign oil.
Almost half of the 1,200 voters polled by Peter D. Hart Research Associates Inc. rate imports as one of their two biggest energy concerns. A distant second is the lack of viable alternatives to fossil fuels.
The U.S. imports about two-thirds of its oil. Of all the energy the country consumes every year, only 6 percent is renewable (excluding nuclear). The rest is oil, gas and coal.

Chrysler Statement on Jim Press' Toyota Slap
Editor's note: Jim Press said when he was at Toyota, "the Japanese government paid for 100% of the development of the battery and hybrid system that went into the Toyota Prius." That got Toyota's panties in a bunch. What follows is Chrysler's backpedaling:
There have been several news reports today concerning statements made by Chrysler LLC Vice Chairman and President Jim Press on battery development for hybrid vehicles. First of all, Press was not speaking negatively of Toyota.
In a recent interview, he referenced the close cooperation between the Japanese government and Japanese industry. He said the Japanese government strongly supported R & D (research and development) investment in battery development, and the Prius and other Japanese models benefited from that investment in industry.

Economic Case for Hybrids: Not Yet
Among 10 of the most popular hybrids on the market today, the amount of time required to accumulate savings in fuel expenses that offset the price premium is far longer than one would ordinarily keep their vehicle.
Using the national average price for regular unleaded gas of $3.23 per gallon, Lexus GS 450h buyers would have to keep their vehicles for less time than buyers of any other hybrid models, but would still have to hold on to their vehicles for 10 years to earn back the premium.

Honda President Takeo Fukui has revealed the automaker plans to rely on nickel-based batteries to power the much anticipated new Honda hybrid the company hopes will take on Toyota's dominant Prius in the growing green car category.
Fukui is bucking the industry trend of moving to lithium ion batteries for the new vehicle, saying they are not yet ready for mass distribution, according to an interview in Automotive News.
Due to launch in 2009, the new Honda will be a standalone hybrid model, as is the Prius, and is expected to cost less than the current Civic Hybrid. Fukui has said the styling will take cues from Honda's newly redesigned FCX hydrogen vehicle, which has won raves for sleek styling.

The Mindset of Hybrid Morons
This press release asks the question -- is there a Hybrid Mindset?
And we say yes, obviously. A hybrid mindset is dominated by feelings that slogans and labels that make you feel better are better than reality -- especially the reality that hybrid vehicles cost too much, don't save enough fuel and produce more environmental pollution that ordinary gas burners.
We have had it with the hybrid mindset. For those of you that haven't had it, move next to a landfill where they dump the used hybrid batteries. Or the strip mines where they get the raw materials.
In other words, people with hybrid mindsets are easily duped by marketing programs that promise a world immune to cause and effect. Full release after the jump.

GM's Next-Generation Hybrid
By Tom Stephens, Group Vice President GM Powertrain
As Rick Wagoner announced this morning at the Geneva auto show, we have a strong new addition to our portfolio of hybrid technologies. The next-generation GM Hybrid system is an affordable hybrid option that will be nearly three times more powerful than the one currently found on the Saturn Vue Green Line, the Saturn Aura Green Line and the Chevy Malibu Hybrid.
We’ll introduce the system in North America in 2010, where you may eventually see it in more than 100,000 of our vehicles annually. The new system is based on a lighter but more powerful lithium-ion battery than the nickel metal hydride one we use today.

If you haven’t been able to tell over the last few years, GM is really, really trying to do things differently, and not just in the way we’re designing and engineering our products.
This means telling our story, and spurring conversations both with and among the driving public, in a more honest and open kind of way. Our blogs have always tried to stay faithful to that premise (even if we don’t always have the chance to engage as often as we’d like), and we plan to build on it going forward.

Energy bill requires wider use of ethanol
President Bush signed into law Wednesday legislation that will bring more fuel-efficient vehicles into auto showrooms and require wider use of ethanol, calling it “a major step” toward energy independence and easing global warming.
The legislation signed by Bush at a ceremony at the Energy Department requires automakers to increase fuel efficiency by 40 percent to an industry average 35 miles per gallon by 2020. It also ramps up production of ethanol use to 36 billion gallons a year by 2022.
Bush said the new requirements will help “address our vulnerabilities and dependency” on foreign oil by reducing demand for gasoline and diversifying the nation’s fuel supply.

Lighter materials will increase fuel efficiency
Automakers will turn to a mix of fuel-efficient vehicles and technologies — from advanced hybrids and clean diesels to lightweight materials — to respond to tougher fuel efficiency standards approved by Congress, industry leaders said Tuesday.
Amid rising fuel prices, car makers have been expecting the more stringent requirements and emphasized their choices of vehicles that get more miles to the gallon.
But the energy bill, which will require the industry's fleet of new cars, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and vans to average 35 miles per gallon by 2020, will help shape the lineup of new cars appearing in dealers showrooms during the next decade.

Honda Plans Heavy Investment In Hybrids
Honda plans to invest aggressively in research for hybrids and other new technology in Japan, says Takeo Fukui, president of Japan's No. 2 automaker. It will introduce a new hybrid model--which runs on gas and electricity--with an affordable price tag in 2009, targeting sales of 200,000 vehicles a year. Hybrid sales will make up about 10% of the automaker's sales by about 2010, Fukui says.
Honda will invest about $425 million in a new research center in Japan to focus on next-generation cars, including hybrids and fuel cells, Fukui says. The center will be partially running by 2009, and fully open by 2010, and will also focus on research for new technology for Honda's Acura luxury brand models.
Fukui says Honda's hybrid system is better in some ways than Toyota's system, including that it costs less, but he will not specify a price.

Mercedes Hybrid vehicles - several drive systems on board
Two of the important aims in developing visionary drive systems are to save fuel and reduce emissions, and Daimler AG is pursuing these objectives in various ways. One approach is that of hybrid drives.
This involves installing several power sources in a vehicle that can be used individually or together, depending on the situation. With today’s automobiles, there are generally two systems, an internal combustion engine in combination with an electric motor.
A drive of this kind offers benefits not only in terms of economy and environmental compatibility, but also with regard to driving enjoyment, comfort and everyday practicality.

Alternative drive systems at Daimler AG
Five-stage roadmap for sustainable mobility
The history of alternative drive systems at Daimler AG began with the invention of the automobile itself in 1886. Both Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz installed spark-ignition engines in their carriages, using gasoline as fuel.
But this did not mean to say that they believed this was the perfect drive system; the two inventors examined all sorts of possible engines and fuels, even long after 1886, because - and this is the true motivation for an inventor - they thought there could be a better way.

Mercedes alternative drive systems address mobility of the future
The internal combustion engine seems the perfect drive system for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Since the invention of the gasoline-powered automobile in 1886 by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, each working independently of the other, and the subsequent introduction of the diesel engine, it has become the global standard.
This has been helped by the many advantages it offers: today’s engines are powerful and refined, relatively compact, durable, and require little maintenance. Energy supplies in the form of fuel can easily be transported and replenished as and when required.

Study: Hybrid Owners Are Wealthier and Smarter Than You
NEW YORK -- Democratic, wealthy, educated and active are four adjectives that describe today's hybrid vehicle owner, according to a recent analysis from Scarborough Research, a consumer and media research firm.
Scarborough's analysis finds that almost half (42 percent) of the households in the U.S. that own or lease at least one hybrid vehicle have an annual income of $100,000 or more. That is more than twice the national average.
The adults who live in these households, "Hybrid Owners," are more than twice as likely as all U.S. adults to have a college degree. This includes the twenty-seven percent of Hybrid Owners who have a post graduate degree, compared to nine percent of adults overall. Hybrid Owners skew older than average, and are 23 percent more likely than average to be aged 50+.

Mercedes Hybrid drives from 1969

Mixed drive systems, in particular the combination of electric motor and internal combustion engine, are another option for automobiles of the future in addition to the fuel cell.
Since 1969, Mercedes-Benz has been doing research in this area without interruption. But the tradition of hybrid drives goes a long way farther back in brand history: as early as in 1907 Daimler Motoren-Gesellschaft in Vienna Neustadt introduced a Mercedes-Mixte developed by Ferdinand Porsche.
