2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download

fuel_econ_guide_08.jpgThe EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.

In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.

To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Poll: More Americans Worry About Energy Issues, Than Home Foreclosures, Jobs or Global Warming

OMAHA, Neb. -- When it comes to energy, Americans worry most about dependence on foreign oil.

Almost half of the 1,200 voters polled by Peter D. Hart Research Associates Inc. rate imports as one of their two biggest energy concerns. A distant second is the lack of viable alternatives to fossil fuels.

The U.S. imports about two-thirds of its oil. Of all the energy the country consumes every year, only 6 percent is renewable (excluding nuclear). The rest is oil, gas and coal.

Audi TDI – perennial winner in motor sports

At the beginning, the drivers couldn’t believe their ears – long time professionals like Frank Biela (Germany) and Tom Kristensen (Denmark) had to completely change their driving habits. Up to then, they had acclimatized themselves to the engine noise in their open sports cars – and now, from a certain speed onward, it could no longer be heard. That’s how quietly the V12 TDI runs in the new Audi R10.

With the 12 cylinder diesel, Audi had written a completely new chapter in the history of motor sports. The 5.5 liter TDI, which was created according to the rules applied at the Le Mans 24 hour race, is a superior racing engine.

Audi TDI – the superior principle

The TDI engines from Audi are superior engines that feature commanding performance and dynamic power. The 221 hp of the three liter TDI that powers various Audi models, for example, provides about 80 hp of output per liter of displacement – a level that just a few years ago was reserved for the sports car segment.

Thanks to their extremely low consumption levels and their proliferation, especially in Europe, TDI engines have become the most successful efficiency technology in the world. When driven under realistic, mixed driving conditions, TDI cars generally also beat comparable models with hybrid drives.

Audi TDI – at the top for the past two decades

Audi is the pioneer in turbocharged diesel engines with direct injection – since 1989 the company has built and sold more than 4.5 million cars with TDI engines. From the very start, the initials TDI began to develop into a synonym for superior propulsive power and a maximum efficiency; the technology has advanced to become a trend setter for the entire automotive industry.

No other drive system has yet been able to beat the turbocharged diesel direct injection engine when it comes to power combined with low consumption.

The Audi R8 V12 TDI

AudiLeMansConcept.jpgThe V12 TDI unleashes the kind of incredible power that also makes it a suitable engine for a supercar – Audi unveiled a concept car based on the R8 at the Detroit Auto show earlier this year.

Diesels look to rev up their reputations

Diesel-powered vehicles haven’t enjoyed the best reputation in the United States, despite the well-known benefit of impressive fuel efficiency. Consumers have long been unimpressed by other traits, such as their black clouds of exhaust soot, ear-rattling racket and, ahem, let’s call it “stately” acceleration.

But an emerging generation of new diesel vehicles looks set to upend those expectations. Some high-performance models will soon exploit the fuel economy benefits of diesel power while delivering the neck-snapping acceleration associated with gas-guzzling cars.

Seen in New York: Audi's Hand-Built $1 Million Car

AudiLeMansConcept.jpgIt's not very often you get to stroll past a piece of four-wheeled machinery that's worth a million bucks.

And it's even less rare to see something like that actually being driven on the street.

But indeed we did have that experience when we saw this custom built Audi R8 Le Mans concept on a NYC street.

The only one of its kind, the Le Mans Concept was built to house a V12 diesel engine that produces 500 horsepower and 730 lb.-ft. of torque. And also to look very, very cool.

And just in case someone actually knew what it was, or might decide to practice urban driving skills, the Le Mans Concept was escorted down the streets by three Audi Q7 SUVs -- one in front, one behind and one on the left, as a protective phalanx. Because who wants to make that call -- "Uh, ya, Hans, listen mein buddy, I wrecked the concept car."

General Motors: And Now for Something Completely Different

By Christopher Barger, Director, GM Global Communications Technology

If you haven’t been able to tell over the last few years, GM is really, really trying to do things differently, and not just in the way we’re designing and engineering our products.

This means telling our story, and spurring conversations both with and among the driving public, in a more honest and open kind of way. Our blogs have always tried to stay faithful to that premise (even if we don’t always have the chance to engage as often as we’d like), and we plan to build on it going forward.

Mercedes marks ten years of CDI technology

467396_802935.jpgTen years ago, Mercedes-Benz ushered in a new era of diesel engines in passenger cars, with "common rail direct injection" technology, first used in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (202 series).

CDI engines have a fuel line in the form of a central pressure reservoir (common rail), from which fuel is released into the cylinders via solenoid valves as required.

Common rail technology made it possible to design smooth-running engines with low emissions and high torque, and quickly became established as the new standard for passenger car diesel engines.

Mercedes Hybrid vehicles - several drive systems on board

580809_1028781.jpgTwo of the important aims in developing visionary drive systems are to save fuel and reduce emissions, and Daimler AG is pursuing these objectives in various ways. One approach is that of hybrid drives.

This involves installing several power sources in a vehicle that can be used individually or together, depending on the situation. With today’s automobiles, there are generally two systems, an internal combustion engine in combination with an electric motor.

A drive of this kind offers benefits not only in terms of economy and environmental compatibility, but also with regard to driving enjoyment, comfort and everyday practicality.

Alternative drive systems at Daimler AG

580787_1028718.jpgFive-stage roadmap for sustainable mobility

The history of alternative drive systems at Daimler AG began with the invention of the automobile itself in 1886. Both Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz installed spark-ignition engines in their carriages, using gasoline as fuel.

But this did not mean to say that they believed this was the perfect drive system; the two inventors examined all sorts of possible engines and fuels, even long after 1886, because - and this is the true motivation for an inventor - they thought there could be a better way.

Mercedes alternative drive systems address mobility of the future

The internal combustion engine seems the perfect drive system for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Since the invention of the gasoline-powered automobile in 1886 by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, each working independently of the other, and the subsequent introduction of the diesel engine, it has become the global standard.

This has been helped by the many advantages it offers: today’s engines are powerful and refined, relatively compact, durable, and require little maintenance. Energy supplies in the form of fuel can easily be transported and replenished as and when required.

Automakers Collaborate To Cut Green Costs

Companies including General Motors, Toyota and Daimler are increasing spending to research and develop a range of projects--cleaner gasoline and diesel engines, hybrid systems and electric and fuel-cell cars as well as ethanol-powered cars--that cut carbon-dioxide emissions and improve fuel economy.

To reduce costs and speed development, some companies have begun joining hands with rivals. GM, which is competing with Toyota to retain its No. 1 spot in global sales for this year, is developing a hybrid power source in partnership with BMW and Daimler, for example, in an effort to catch up with Toyota. And Toyota last year teamed up with local truck maker Isuzu Motors to develop new, cleaner-diesel engines to battle rivals in Europe.

Combined R&D costs at Japan's top three automakers--Toyota, Honda and Nissan--will rise 34% in the fiscal year ending in March from five years earlier because of investments in green technologies. Koji Endo, an analyst at Credit Suisse, expects car makers will continue to seek alliances in certain technology areas that they can't work on alone.

Audi remains the race car to beat

INGOLSTADT, Germany - The Audi drivers are facing a difficult task in the finale of the American Le Mans Series at Laguna Seca (US state of California). As expected the lighter LM P2 sportscars dominated qualifying. Team Audi Sport North America’s two Audi R10 TDI prototypes will start Saturday’s race as fastest LM P1 cars from fifth and seventh positions on the grid.

The 2.238-mile long track in the hills near Monterey is ideal for the LM P2 sportscars which weigh 150 kilograms less than the cars of the LM P1 top class. Furthermore, the track has traditionally little grip due to the sandy surroundings. This makes it difficult to take full advantage of the high torque of the 650-hp TDI engine.

Ford Research Centre Aachen

fordrescent.jpgPersonal mobility is without doubt a fundamental need in modern society, and the automobile has provided us with this individual freedom and independence, thereby making its mark on the past century. Mobility has also become a significant economic factor: road transport forms more than 10% of the European GDP.

Mobility creates and secures jobs and maintains competitiveness. Mobility, however, still presents society with major challenges: the reduction of exhaust gas emissions and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, limited supplies of fossil fuels and the development of possible alternatives and also improved traffic safety.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter now available with ECO-Start

1252_07A2157.jpgAn engine that is not running does not need any fuel. This truism helps the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to save fuel and thereby reduce its environmental impact.

If the vehicle is stationary with the engine idling and the transmission in neutral for more than three seconds, the engine is automatically switched off. As soon as the driver depresses the clutch pedal again, the engine re-starts.

The potential for saving fuel is considerable: in some cases, depending on application and traffic density, drivers managed to cut their fuel consumption by as much as 20%. On average, the amount saved will probably be somewhere between five and eight percent.

Better fuel economy could cost car buyers

The government has yet to require higher fuel efficiency from the auto industry, but some manufacturers are already bracing for much stricter standards. Chrysler Group even went so far as to scrap plans for a new luxury vehicle that had been in the works.

Industry insiders insist consumers should be bracing too — for significantly higher prices and far fewer choices.

Last month the Senate passed a bill that would increase the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for all passenger cars and trucks by about 40 percent. That would require automakers to raise the average gas mileage of their vehicles to 35 mpg by 2020. A proposal in the House would hold manufacturers to those standards as early as 2018.

The legislature is far from putting such changes into law. But observers say stricter standards — in some form — appear to be inevitable.

And buyers, beware. The impact on consumers is likely to be more than just the ability to get farther on a gallon of gas.

Nissan Plans Diesel SUV in Japan

Nissan Motor Co. said it will launch a diesel-powered version of its X-Trail sport-utility vehicle in the domestic market by autumn 2008, testing the Japanese appetite for such fuel-saving cars.

The launch comes almost two-and-half years ahead of schedule and reflects the pressure on auto makers and consumers from high fuel costs. Nissan's last diesel passenger-car offering in Japan was the Sunny in 2002.

Diesel engines in general are 20% to 30% more fuel efficient and emit less carbon dioxide than gasoline engines. But diesel isn't as popular in Japan as in Europe, where about half of all cars sold are powered by diesel engines. Only 0.1% of passenger cars sold in 2006 in Japan were diesel powered, mainly because such cars are considered dirty and noisy, industry players say.

"To be honest, we don't know how far diesel will be accepted in Japan," Yo Usuba, a senior vice president in charge of Nissan's powertrain operations, said at a news conference. "But given the recent high fuel costs...calls for diesel are growing," he added.
