Wolfsburg -- Quick double: Thor Qualmann from Denmark and Shane Williams from South Africa share the first row of the grid for races four and five of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz.
In the first part of the qualifying Qualmann drove the fastest lap at 1m 42.172s and relegated Williams to second place on the grid for Saturday’s race by an extremely thin margin of six hundredths of a second.
Third place went to Andreas Simonsen from Sweden. In the second session Williams countered and, setting the absolute best time of 1m 41.867s in front of Qualmann and Sebastian Voges (Beckum, Germany), secured the pole position for the race on Sunday. The competitiveness of the field was impressive as well: in the first qualifying session, the 16 Racing Polos were within one second of each other.
18-year-old Thor Qualmann was obviously overjoyed: "So far, I only knew the EuroSpeedway from computer games, but today things were going perfectly in the Racing Polo as well. Meanwhile, I’ve figured out how to choose the right tyre pressure.” Shane Williams had worked out an exceptional strategy for both qualifying sessions, which worked out like a charm: "Most of the drivers used new tyres in the first session, but I saved mine for the second part. Consequently, I only needed four laps to set my best time and have almost new tyres for the race on Saturday,” explained the 21-year-old from Cape Town. For the two races in the Lausitz region, the Polo Cup contenders received four new Dunlop tyres as well as two used tyres from previous races.
