Porsche at the Grand Prix of Turkey: Van Lagen celebrates first win
Stuttgart -- Jaap van Lagen secured his first win of the season at the fourth round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup in Istanbul (Turkey).
The 31-year-old Dutchman had taken up the race from second on the grid and, after an excellent start, outsprinted his pole-setting Damac Kadach Racing team mate Chris Mamerow (Germany) to the first corner. Van Lagen, who contests his first full season in the world’s fastest international one make series, held onto his lead to take the flag in first after 14 laps.
With a gap of around two and a half seconds, Jan Seyffarth (Germany) crossed the finish line in second. The 21-year-old made a good start from third position, pulled alongside Mamerow in the first corner and won the duel. In the final race laps the two former UPS-Porsche juniors delivered a gripping and fair fight for second place. Time and again, Mamerow drew alongside Seyffarth’s race car but finally had to relinquish second to the Konrad Motorsport pilot, with 23-year-old Mamerow finishing in third.
Fourth position went to Uwe Alzen (Germany, SPS Performance – PZ Aschaffenburg). The 40-year-old Porsche specialist had taken up the race from twelfth to put in a faultless chase through the field. By lap seven the former DTM pilot had already moved into seventh. Afterwards he benefitted from the retirements of Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands, Jetstream Motorsport PZ Essen) as well as René Rast (Germany, VELTINS MRS Racing) and duly overtook Danny Watts (Great Britain, SAS Lechner Racing), who saw the chequered flag in seventh.
Ranking fifth and sixth were reigning vice-champion Damien Faulkner (Ireland, SAS Lechner Racing) and David Saelens (Belgium, Irwin Racing), with Mike Verschuur (Netherlands, Racing Team Jetstream PZ Essen) securing eighth. Ninth position went to the quadruple Supercup champion Patrick Huisman (Netherlands, Irwin Racing), trailed by his compatriot Sebastiaan Bleekemolen (Bleekemolens Race Planet – PZ Eindhoven) in tenth.
In the championship standings, Jan Seyffarth takes over the lead with 68 points. Jeroen Bleekemolen, who yielded zero points from Istanbul, sits second 14 points in arrears. Chris Mamerow ranks third overall, with 52 points to his credit.
Jaap van Lagen (winner): “This is a fantastic result for our team and for me. My start was super and I was able to immediately overtake Chris. Then all I had to do was keep out of trouble and that’s what I did. I’m ecstatic with my first Supercup victory. I hope it continues like this.”
Jan Seyffarth (second): “The most important thing for me today was to bring home points. I didn’t think I would finish second, so that’s great. As the new leader I’m now the one to pursue – but this is a good feeling. The fight with Chris today was extremely hard. He kept me under attack to the last corner but he stayed fair. That’s racing at its best.”
Chris Mamerow (third): “My start was miserable and I had to battle with many minor problems. Near the finish the car was handling much better but it wasn’t enough to get me past Jan. Unfortunately, I couldn’t catch up to him in the points. That’s annoying. Still, third in the championship is a good starting position for the rest of the season.”
