Four Raider models for 2007 are available in the well equipped LS trim line: Extended Cab 2WD; Double Cab 2WD and Double Cab 4WD, plus the Double Cab 2WD Special Edition powered exclusively by a 4.7-liter SOHC V-8 engine. 10 Safe Vehicles Less Than $25,000

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 10 Safe New Vehicles for Less Than $25,000 list has arrived today, just in time for the final weeks of summer.

Vehicles that made the list had to meet tough standards, which required all vehicles include stability control and a minimum of six airbags (front and side curtain). On some of the vehicles, those safety requirements are not standard and cost a little extra, but even with those extras, all of the vehicles come in under $25,000.

Porsche Cayenne claims all podium positions at Transsyberia Rally

Stuttgart -- Three Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia on the first three positions, seven Cayennes in the top ten: these are the results of the 2007 Transsyberia Rally, one of the world's toughest offroad marathons.

After a two-week epic drive from Moscow to Ulan Bator, Americans Rod Millen and his co-driver Richard Kelsey reached the finish in the capital of Mongolia today with a Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia as the winners.

2007 Kia Amanti Gets Highest Rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

IRVINE, Calif. -- Today it was announced the 2007 Kia Amanti received a "Good" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in a side impact crash test for large luxury cars.

A "Good" is the highest possible rating given by IIHS and the results show a range of performance in how well large cars are designed to protect people in serious side impact crashes, according to the institute.

Volkswagen Corp. Boast Eight Drop Top Models, From Lamborghini and Bentley to Audi and VW

Wolfsburg, Germany - It is high summer and so it is high season for convertibles. According to a recent study by the German Federal Vehicle Registration Authority, most of them are being driven around the Starnberger See and in the Hochtaunus region.

Buick Ranks Highest in Vehicle Dependability

DETROIT - Buick has been recognized for building the most dependable vehicles in the automotive industry, according to an annual J.D. Power and Associates study released today.

According to the 2007 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), Buick improved eight points from third last year (153 PP100) to first (145 PP100), earning a share of the lead with Lexus.

First Rolls-Royce Phantom Convertibles Leave Factory

The first customer Phantom Drophead Coupés have left the company’s head office and manufacturing plant at Goodwood. The five cars are destined for customers around the world.

Each car is hand-built to specific requirements and features individual wood veneer, leather and paint finish choices. The first five customers have also specified the optional steel bonnet and rear teak deck. The bonnet is machine brushed before being hand finished to ensure a uniform grain throughout. The deck is made up of separate solid teak slats, hand sanded and waxed to give a ‘just cut’ finish.

Test Driving the 2007 Volvo S80

The 2007 Volvo S80 is an elegant, understated executive sedan that drives wonderfully and imparts a feeling of quiet satisfaction.

Our model was equipped with Volvo’s first-ever V8-engine that puts out an impressive 311 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. And driving it at highway speed reminds even the most mpg-friendly individual that while all cars can do 70 to 80 miles an hour, it takes a V8 to make the journey feel like a pleasure jaunt. As opposed to a nerve-wracking, engine-block twisting ordeal.

That being said, the V8 delivers a comfortable mileage estimate of 17 mpg in the city, 25 on the highway. Because the big engine is paired with such a solid frame and suspension, you never get the feeling you've got more power than stability. I would say the stable ride had a lot to do with the 18-inch wheels [17-inchers are standard] that came with the $2,495 Zubra sport package that also added perforated seating surfaces, active bi-directional xenon lamps and variable suspension settings.

If you decide to opt for the new, compact in-line 6-cylinder engine, that generates 235 hp, you will reap 19 mpg in the city, 28 on the highway.

For a car that starts at $38,705 for the 3.2 liter six-cylinder and $47,350 for the all-wheel drive 8, though, there has got to be a lot more than just a solid ride.

And there is plenty to delight the luxury sedan buyer who may not want the flash of a BMW 5-series or Acura RL, including creatures comforts and tech gadgets that'll impress even the most too busy for cool stuff like e-mail execs.

Kia SUV and Minivan Earn Highest Rating in Rear Impact Evaluations

IRVINE, Calif. — Today it was announced the Kia Sedona minivan and Sorento SUV both received "Good" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for rear impact collisions. A "Good" is the highest possible rating given by IIHS and according to the institute represents the best protection for people of all sizes in a typical rear-end crash.

"It is becoming well-known that Kia builds safety into all of its vehicles and Sedona and Sorento are just the latest examples to pass independent testing," said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of Kia Motors America (KMA). "We strive to provide our customers with quality vehicles that are equipped with the best available safety features."

IIHS bases their ratings of "Good," "Acceptable," "Marginal" or "Poor" on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that, according to the IIHS, when combined assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in an average rear crash. According to IIHS injuries to the neck are the most commonly reported by victims of car crashes; the Sedona and Sorento's standard active head restraints offer optimum and essential passenger neck and back support and protection.

Audi's 'Truth In Engineering' Ads For Q7 SUV

AUDI IS EXTENDING ITS NEW brand campaign with an ad campaign for its 2007 Q7 SUV. The effort for the SUV, which went on sale last year, comprises online trailers, and TV ads, as well as print with the theme "Truth in Engineering".

The ads promote features like seating for seven, and vehicle performance and agility by making fun of how those features are underrepresented in the category.

In April, Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Audi USA launched its first effort from new ad shop San Francisco-based Venables, Bell & Partners, which won the $70 million account in January, replacing Durham, NC-based McKinney and Silver.

Survey: Mercedes Fields Three Contemporary Classics

Runners-up: Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Maybach 57/62 and smart fortwo

The CLS, SL and G-Class from Mercedes-Benz are classics-to-be. According to the votes of the readers of the Motor Klassik trade journal, these cars are the number one in their respective categories, upper medium class, convertibles and offroaders.

Other models from the Mercedes Car Group finished in second place: the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren in the category of sports cars, the Maybach 57/62 in the luxury class and the smart fortwo in the category of mini cars.

This means that the Mercedes Car Group is represented with the largest number of models in this renowned readers’ election. This year, the classics-to-be awards will be presented in the Opel Forum in Rüsselsheim on June 14, 2007.

Saturn Offers Aura Side-By-Side-By-Side Test Drive

Vehicle shoppers invited to drive Camry, Accord at Saturn stores in effort to attract Aura buyers

Detroit - Saturn is hoping that, when consumers are considering the purchase of a new Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, they take a test drive - at a Saturn retailer.

Starting today, consumers who visit a Saturn store can drive the new 2007 Aura mid-size sedan, the 2007 North American Car of the Year, alongside popularly-equipped versions of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry as part of its new "Side-by-Side-by-Side Test Drive" program.

"We are confident that the Saturn Aura compares favorably to the Accord and Camry," said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn general manager. "When people shop for midsize sedans, those two vehicles are popular choices, so we want to make it very easy for consumers to add the Aura to their consideration list."

Win for Bernd Schneider and the new C-Class

Bernd Schneider (2007 Genuine Parts AMG Mercedes C-Class) won the fourth round of the 2007 DTM in Brands . It is Bernd’s 42nd DTM victory and his first of the year. For the race version of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class it is the second win within three weeks.

All four 2007 C-Class cars finished among the top-six: Mika Häkkinen (AMG Mercedes C-Class), starting from pole position, came home fourth ahead of Bruno Spengler (DaimlerChrysler Bank AMG Mercedes C-Class) and Jamie Green (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class).

In the overall ranking, Bernd Schneider improved to third with 17.5 points behind Audi drivers Martin Tomczyk (20 points) and Mattias Ekström (18). Paul di Resta (JAWA4U.de AMG Mercedes C-Class 2005), who retired on the first lap due to an accident without his own fault, dropped from first overall to fourth with 16 points.

TUSTIN, Calif. -- A study released today by noted automotive consulting firm AutoPacific, Inc. summarizes the results of its 2007 model year vehicle satisfaction research. Wow wow wow wow -- where do we start? The 2007 BMW Z4 Roadster is a best in class roadster that got so many comments during our week of top-down driving fun that we almost were ready to have a sign printed: I know it's a cool car.

Hyundai Azera, Entourage and Santa Fe Named Best-In-Segment in Strategic Vision 2007 Total Quality Index

Fact Sheet: Ford Escape Hybrid Taxis

-- Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid taxi to be put into service in the country. It was introduced in San Francisco in early 2005.

-- New York City and Chicago followed and formally approved vehicles like the Escape Hybrid for taxi use; New York City has 288 Escape Hybrids in its fleet, San Francisco has more than 40.

-- Over the course of 100,000 miles, an Escape Hybrid taxi will save approximately 1,666 gallons of gas or 32,000 lbs. of carbon emissions compared with a conventional cab.

Rise in Gas Prices Has Cost Americans $20 Billion

WASHINGTON - The jump in U.S. gasoline prices this year has so far drained consumers of an extra $20 billion, or about $146 for each passenger car in the country, the Government Accountability Office told Congress on Tuesday.

The national price for regular unleaded gasoline hit a record $3.22 a gallon this week, and is up $1.05 since the beginning of February, according to the Energy Department.

The added expense is taking money away from consumers to spend on other goods and services.

Hybrid Ford Escape Taxis Meet The Street

So there was good reason for concern among drivers, cab owners and taxi commissions when the first mini-fleets of Escape Hybrid taxis hit the road. Among them:

GM's Bob Lutz: Dealers, consumers are "shocked" at high quality of new products

Let me start by apologizing for not checking in lately. And I do that not because I feel I owe anyone an apology but because I’m truly sorry I don’t get a chance to do as much of this as I’d like to. And while I wish I could blog more frequently, I must admit I find it a little disconcerting that some of you seem to need me to reassure you that I still care.

The tone of some of the comments posted lately — that Bob is bored with blogging, that the GM blog is a failure, that management feels the blog has backfired, that GM is pulling out of the blog business — has been, frankly, bordering on ridiculous.

I’ve met many of the automotive bloggers at events in Detroit, Chicago and New York and I must say I’ve greatly enjoyed our meetings, interactions and discussions. And I’ve come to realize that those bloggers don’t represent the people posting comments like the above to this blog. And that people posting comments like the above, in turn, don’t represent most of the readers and posters on this blog.

In short, I am not bored with blogging, far from it. And I’m not going to let the comments of an extreme subset turn me off to it, either. I will continue to do it, whenever I can, and as long as it seems people want to read it. And by the way, GM thinks its blogs are a success, too, and will forge ahead with all of them and more.

Porsche releases new prices for Euro market

Stuttgart -- Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, is raising the price of its 911 and Boxster sports-car series with effect from August 1. The Cayenne models, as presented in February 2007, will not be affected.
At the start of the new model year, there will be a 0.5 percent price increase on the Boxster and a 0.4 percent rise on the Boxster S and Cayman S. The Cayman price will remain unchanged.

The cost of the 911 Carrera, GT3, GT3 RS and all-wheel-drive models (excluding the 911 Carrera 4S Convertible) will go up by 1.5 percent. The cost of the Carrera S and the Carrera, Carrera S and Carrera 4S convertibles will rise by 1.4 percent, while the 911 Turbo will increase by
2.3 percent.

New Acura MDX and Ford Taurus are top performers in crash tests

051407.jpgARLINGTON, VA —The 2007 Acura MDX luxury SUV plus the 2008 Ford Taurus and twin Mercury Sable large family cars earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's TOP SAFETY PICK award.

Vehicles earning this designation afford superior overall crash protection among the vehicles in their class. To qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK, vehicles must earn the highest rating of good in all three Institute tests — front, side, and rear.

They also have to be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC), which is a standard feature on the MDX and optional on the Taurus and Sable beginning with 2008 models.

"Criteria to win TOP SAFETY PICK award are tough because they're intended to drive continued safety improvements such as high crash test ratings and rapid addition of ESC," says Institute president Adrian Lund. Pontiac's '08 G8 revving on rear wheel drive

CHICAGO – Confirming its commitment to style and performance, Pontiac introduced a show car version of an all-new, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan at the Chicago Auto Show. The 2008 Pontiac G8 will be available in dealerships early next year.

“With the balance of rear-wheel drive and the availability of V-8 power, the G8 represents another step in Pontiac ’s commitment to its performance DNA,” said John Larson, Pontiac general manager. “Added to the Solstice and the recently announced additions of the G6 and Torrent to the GXP series, the G8 demonstrates that Pontiac has never been more serious about the business of performance – and we expect this vehicle to be very competitive in the segment, even against cars that cost far more.”

The G8 is the first North American application of GM’s new global rear-wheel-drive architecture developed by Holden, GM’s Australian subsidiary.

The G8 show car unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show is representative of the production GT model, including use of the 362-horsepower (270 kW) 6.0L V-8 engine and optional six-speed manual transmission. The show car also features some unique items not found on the production model, including:

Ford inviting customers to sync their rides

If there was ever a product plugged directly into contemporary lifestyles, it's Ford Sync, a new communications and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft.

The hands-free wireless system enables drivers to control cell phones and MP3 players using controls mounted on the steering wheel or radio or verbal commands. Sync users can call friends and answer incoming cell-phone calls, read text messages aloud, send text replies from a list of preprogrammed messages and access songs from iPods or MP3 players by artist, album, title, genre or playlist.

With such industry-first features it's no wonder Sync won the cnet.com People's Voice award at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show, and no surprise that Ford's Web site for Sync is not your traditional automobile site.

Porsche trainees build luxe emergency vehicle

Cayenne also brings rescuers to difficult terrain

Stuttgart -- One of the fastest emergency vehicles, fully suited for rough terrain as well, has been developed in Zuffenhausen.

With laborious hand work, 15 trainees of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart have converted the sport utility vehicle Cayenne S into a very modern deployment vehicle for rescue workers. The prototype will be employed by Health and Safety Services.

The interior of the original production vehicle from the first Cayenne generation was completely modified. The rear seat and passenger seat had to give way to an aluminum frame construction, onto which the stretcher can be slid through the tailgate of the vehicle.

New driveline in the Volvo S80: T6 turbo with AWD

The acclaimed all-new Volvo S80 will soon be available with a new six-cylinder, 285 bhp T6 performance engine with All Wheel Drive

"The T6 engine adds an extra dimension to the S80 engine range," says Hans Wikman, Vice President Vehicle Line Large Cars at Volvo Cars. "The engine has been programmed to provide the highest possible performance with the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emissions."

The T6 petrol engine is based on the compact 3.2-liter in-line aluminum engine that has been part of the S80 engine range since its 2006 introduction. The turbo version has a displacement of 3.0 liters, producing 285 bhp and no less than 295 lb/ft of torque. Maximum torque is on tap from just 1,500 rpm and remains available all the way up the rev range, resulting in remarkably quick acceleration and smooth drivability.

Got Money to Burn? Top Cars Priced Higher Than $100,000

CHICAGO -- While most car buyers might scoff at the notion of spending more than $100,000 on a new car, exotic cars are a rapidly growing segment. The trend doesn't look to be ending anytime soon; new $100,000-plus entries from Porsche and Aston Martin are on the way, and BMW and Mercedes-Benz are expected to produce new, rarified models.

"With continued growth in the exotic cars category, we decided to compile a list of the top cars for buyers in the luxury market," said Cars.com editor David Thomas. "The selection process for these cars was fairly straightforward. Cars on the list all have a sticker price between $100,000 and $200,000 and go above and beyond pedestrian luxury cars in terms of style, performance and attitude."

1. Bentley Continental Flying Spur - The two-door Bentley Continental GT broke things open for the British coach builder with its most famous owner -- Paris Hilton -- getting them plenty of free publicity. But it's the four-door Flying Spur that is the epitome of how much exotic luxury you can get for your money -- about $170,000 of your money. Even though Bentley is churning out more Continentals than any other model, they're still hand-built and can be custom ordered, down to the wood grain and leather pigmentation

2. Aston Martin V8 Vantage/Vantage Roadster - The V8 Vantage coupe and convertible are sultry, British and fast. For a mere $110,000, the coupe is a major head-turner that will stand out in a crowd of Porsches and even Ferraris. The Aston has subtle elegance with a ton of performance squeezed out of its V-8 engine.

3. Audi R8 - This new kid on the block is Audi's first take on the semi-exotic sports car. Its modern styling and impressive performance, about on par with the Porsche 911 Turbo, make a value statement at $109,000. The huge grille, mid-engine layout and sporty cockpit scream business; the bold stripe on the side shouts eccentricity.

Infiniti G35, Lexus ES350 & Nissan Maxima All Post 'Excellent' Test Ratings

Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lucerne, and Saab 9-5 achieve 'Very Good' overall scores

YONKERS -- Three of the six upscale sedans tested for the June issue of Consumer Reports, the Infiniti G35, Lexus ES350, and Nissan Maxima, posted "Excellent" overall ratings. It's rare for so many cars to be scored so highly in a monthly test group.

The top-scoring and sporty G35 now ranks as the best car tested by Consumer Reports in the Upscale Sedan category, outpointing the previously- tested Acura TL. The quiet and comfortable E350 came in very close behind the G35. The Maxima rated somewhat lower overall, though still achieving an Excellent overall road test score.

The test group brought together a total of six very different sedans in the $30,000 to $40,000 range, with varying blends of sportiness and opulence. The more posh models tend to be quieter, have more interior space and ride more smoothly. Sporty models usually have less room inside, ride firmly and handle more nimbly.

The three other vehicles rounding out the group, the Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lucerne, and Saab 9-5, all achieved "Very Good" overall ratings. The MKZ was previously called the Zephyr.

New Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet

Stuttgart. Dr.Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, Germany, will be sending the new 911 Turbo Cabriolet to the starting line on September 8. The 20-year tradition within the 911 Series of the 911 Turbo with a classic soft top is continued with this open, top model.

Firstly, the open 2+2 seater offers the driving performance of a high-performance sports car while still providing convertible driving pleasure. Secondly, compared to the competition the 911 Turbo Cabriolet is economical in its fuel consumption, thanks to its deliberate design, outstanding aerodynamics and advanced engine technology

As with the 911 Turbo Coupé, the Cabriolet will also be powered by a 3.6 liter six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine with biturbo turbocharging and Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG). The powerplant already generates 480 hp (353 kW) and 620 Nm of torque at 1950 rpm. With the new, optional “Sport Chrono Turbo Package”, which includes an overboost function, up to 680 Nm is even intermittently possible.

The manual transmission version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just four seconds. With Tiptronic S the time can be cut to 3.8 seconds. Both versions can reach speeds of up to 310 km/h. Fuel consumption for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet is 12.9 liters per 100 kilometers – an exemplary value in the competitive environment.

This has been one of the most successful Ford digital initiatives ever in terms of driving traffic back to the product information homepage.

According to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 New Autoshopper.com Study SM, 77 percent of new vehicle buyers consult independent online resources during their search for a new vehicle.

Stuttgart, Germany – Mercedes-Benz announced today that it will offer the SLR McLaren super sports car in the form of a roadster.

Showcasing the latest in Formula 1 technology, the SLR McLaren is constructed almost entirely of carbon fiber, providing a very high degree of safety as well as extreme torsional rigidity for outstanding handling characteristics. Powered by a supercharged (Kompressor) 5.5-liter, 617-hp AMG V8 engine, the SLR McLaren Roadster can achieve a top speed of 207 mph.

Thanks to its fully retractable top, the Roadster offers undiluted open-air driving pleasure at the highest level, providing occupants with a comfortable open-air experience suitable for everyday use. U.S. deliveries of this new model will begin in Fall 2007.

DETROIT – Chevrolet today announced “Rev It Up 2007: Where Drivers Come To Play” (www.revitup.com), a day of competition and fun geared to automotive enthusiasts. Competitors pay just $25, and their friends and spectators can experience the six-city celebration of car culture for free.

Rev It Up 2007 is a true playground for car lovers. Their research shows that while visits to independent or third-party automotive Web sites are generally holding steady, a record 87 percent of new vehicle buyers visit at least one manufacturer site.

Mercedes-Benz to Offer SIRIUS Radio in More Than 80% of Its Vehicles

SIRIUS added as standard equipment on S-Class and CLS

MONTVALE, N.J. -- Mercedes- Benz, USA and SIRIUS Satellite Radio today announced that Mercedes-Benz USA plans to significantly increase the rate at which they install SIRIUS radios in Mercedes-Benz vehicles to more than 80 percent for 2007, with plans to continue building to 90 percent for 2008 and over 90 percent by 2009.

The growth in the installation rate far exceeds earlier estimates of 50 percent that were set less than two years ago.

The luxury automaker also plans to offer SIRIUS as standard equipment on two additional models this year the S-Class and CLS. The new models will become available with SIRIUS at dealerships later this year. SIRIUS is currently standard in Mercedes-Benz's SL-Class and CL-Class model vehicles, and all AMG and 600 model vehicles.

Ford vehicles comparable to Toyota, Nissan in quality, study says

Consumers might not believe it yet, but the quality of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles is about the same as that of Toyota and Nissan, according to the first- quarter 2007 model-year Global Quality Research System report by the RDA Group, a market research firm based in Bloomfield Hills.

Ford, Lincoln, Mercury brand vehicles had 1,456 problems per 1,000 vehicles, compared with Nissan, which had 1,457 and Toyota, which had 1,453. The report released Wednesday surveyed more than 30,000 new owners of 2007 model-year vehicles after three months of ownership.

It did not track the newest 2008 vehicles, such as the Ford Edge or the new Ford Super Duty. Ford had to temporarily stop selling that pickup to fix a problem that caused flames to shoot out the exhaust system of some vehicles. Ford also delayed delivery of the Edge late last year to ensure top-level quality.

Chinese market to get locally-produced Mazda2

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor (China) Co. Ltd., Mazda Motor Corporation’s management affiliate for the Chinese market, has announced that Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. (CFMA) will produce the all-new Mazda2 at its plant in Nanjing, China. The announcement was made at a pre-show media event Mazda held on April 19, 2007, in advance of the Shanghai International Motor Show. The Nanjing plant is a joint venture with Mazda’s partners in China, the Ford Motor Company and the Changan Automobile Group.

Nissan Raises Price on 2007 Altima Hybrid

NASHVILLE – Nissan North America, Inc. today announced a price adjustment for the 2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid. The new starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $24,990, which goes into effect today, represents an increase of $590.

The 2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid is on sale at Nissan retailers in the eight states that have adopted California emissions regulations – California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The Altima Hybrid has been certified by the Internal Revenue Service as meeting the requirements for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit, thereby qualifying for a tax credit of $2,350.

Hyundai Santa Fe Ranked Among Best Small SUVs

Santa Fe now ranked just below CR's top-rated Toyota RAV4; Dodge Nitro posts disappointing "Fair" score

NEW YORK -- Newly redesigned, the Hyundai Santa Fe Limited earned a "Very Good" overall rating -- surpassed only by the V6-powered Toyota RAV4 Limited -- in tests for the May issue of Consumer Reports.

The BLUETEC concept utilizes state-of-the-art diesel technology featuring common-rail direct injection. Fuel consumption in these diesel vehicles is 20 to 40 percent lower than in cars equipped with a comparable gasoline engine, and torque, the key indicator of engine power, is 30 to 50 percent higher.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive from the summer

Maserati GranTurismo North American Debut in New York City

NEW YORK – What better way to illustrate the uses for the new Chevrolet HHR Panel than with the vehicles themselves? Chevy is doing exactly that at the New York Auto Show with two eye-popping wraps – one for business, the other for pleasure.

A delivery vehicle that looks like a bouquet on wheels shows how the HHR Panel can deliver the goods without draining the gas tank. A personal-use Panel, “Skull From Hell,” was designed by student Jim McCammon of Detroit ’s Center for Creative Studies.

The show opens to the public on Friday. HHR Panel will be offered in LS and LT trims, with 2.2L and 2.4L engines – both of which help deliver 30 mpg in highway driving.

The 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR is one of three "hot-rod" style customizations Ford is showing at the 2007 NY Auto Show:

Launching next spring, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR model features a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack that boosts engine output to an estimated 540 horsepower.

Produced in a limited edition of 1,000 units, the Shelby GT500KR coupe comes with a custom carbon composite hood with scoops and stainless steel twist-down hood pins, a lower front air dam with chrome-trimmed functional brake ducts and large 14-inch Brembo front brakes. The suspension has been modified with an emphasis on race-inspired handling.

Drawing inspiration from the classic 1968 KR model, the Shelby GT500KR also features 40th Anniversary exterior badging, unique striping and a distinctive interior with Carroll Shelby-signature embroidered seats and a 40th Anniversary numbered dash plaque.

Coming to dealer showrooms this fall, the 2008 Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition turns the hot Expedition concept vehicle created by hip hop DJ Funkmaster Flex into a limited-production, short wheelbase SUV.

The Expedition FMF will sport a two-tone Colorado Red-and-Black paint scheme with orange pinstriping and special chrome badging, a custom front fascia with integrated fog lamps, side skirts, rear fascia and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels.

Inside, a matching Colorado Red instrument panel, console bezel, shifter and switch bezels blend with four leather captains chairs with red stitching, FMF red logo headrests and a red-stitched steering wheel. Jeep Wrangler Climbs Highest Volcano on Earth, Sets New Altitude World Record

Auburn Hills, Mich. - Seventy years after the first man climbed the world’s highest volcano, Ojos del Salado in Chile, two Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vehicles set a new world record by climbing 6,646 meters (21,804 feet) to the volcano’s rim. The achievement, certified by Guinness World Records™, is not one that is likely to be easily beaten.

Others tried, but only the “go anywhere, do anything” Jeep vehicles could make it to the top of the volcano. It is the second highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere (6,892 meters / 22,597 feet), and now dubbed the “highest parking lot in the world”. Jeep parking only, of course. Over five exhausting days in March, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vehicles carried a team from Extrem Events (Germany), led by Mattias Jeschke, from the base of the inhospitable volcano in the Chilean Andes to the highest point that a four-wheeled vehicle has traveled.

Hitting the streets in early 2008 is one tough boulevard cruiser – the 2008 Ford F-150 Foose Edition styled by custom street rod designer Chip Foose.

Lowered, but looking even more hunkered down thanks to its big 22-inch wheels, the special Foose F-150 sports bold racing stripes that start at the edge of the hood and then thin out over the front fenders to run the length of the vehicle only to widen again at the tailgate.

Nissan's Pitch For Mini-Car: Accessorize It

TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Co. had a tough challenge in launching its Pino minicar: Make it appeal to young female consumers who couldn't care less about cars.

While these deep-pocketed shoppers spend lavishly on clothes and accessories, cars are optional for many. Instead, they rely on bicycles, motorbikes or public transport. So Nissan Motor purposely avoided focusing too much attention on the car itself. Instead, television and print ads portray the Pino as just one item in a collage of accessories, such as plushy animals, furry seat cushions and heart-shaped decals. The Pino pamphlet, designed to read like a comic book, shows a group of fashionable youths eating cupcakes and showing off manicured nails that match the Pino's star upholstery pattern.

"If these young girls see a product that seems irrelevant to them, they'll make an instantaneous decision to ignore it," says Akinao Sato, an account director at TBWA/Hakuhodo, a Tokyo-based joint venture between Omnicom Group Inc.'s TBWA Worldwide and Hakuhodo Inc. that handles Nissan campaigns in Japan.

Nissan has no plans to take its minicars to the U.S. Even the most minute new models in the U.S. have much larger engines than Japanese minicars. "This is a Japan-only phenomenon," says Miwa Ishii, marketing manager for Nissan's minicar division.

Audi Announces 2008 R8 U.S. Pricing

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Audi of America, LLC announced today pricing for the all-new 2008 R8 sports car. The R8 with a six- speed manual transmission will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $109,000 when it launches this fall in the United States. Models equipped with the six-speed R tronic automatic gearbox will start at $118,000.

The R8 is the first mid-engine sports car Audi has ever produced. With a 420 hp V8 4.2L FSI engine and rear-biased quattro(R) all-wheel drive system, the R8 has the performance capabilities unlike any Audi before it. With a zero to 60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph, the R8 is the fastest Audi ever produced. The lightweight aluminum frame and body and 44:56 front-to-rear weight distribution give the R8 tremendous handling capabilities, with the balance expected of a mid-engine sports car.

Honda Adds New Type R to Japanese Civic Lineup

TOKYO, Japan - March 29, 2007– Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced the release of the all-new Civic Type R, a pure sports edition of the Civic with further enhanced driving performance. The new Civic Type R will go on sale throughout Japan on Friday, March 30.

This new Civic Type R was developed to make the driver feel at one with the car for the ultimate driving experience in all driving conditions, including on circuits.

The all-new Civic Type R comes equipped with a specially tuned 2.0-liter normally aspirated engine matched to a 6-speed manual transmission. Trio of Hyundai Vehicles Receives Five-Star Safety Ratings From NHTSA

2007 Veracruz, Santa Fe and Elantra Earn Highest Government Crash Test Ratings

FOUNTAIN VALLEY -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave five-star crash test ratings, the highest government rating under the agency's New Car Assessment Program, to the all-new 2007 Hyundai Veracruz and Santa Fe for both frontal and side-impact crash tests. The 2007 Elantra also scored five stars for frontal crash performance and Veracruz earned four stars for rollover performance.

NHTSA uses a consumer-friendly ratings system -- ranging from one to five stars, with five being the highest. Sixty-three 2007 models were assessed. Categories included sport utility vehicles, heavy and light passenger cars, pickups, vans and compact and medium passenger cars. Beginning in September 2007, government star ratings will be listed on the window stickers of new vehicles.

MINI Offers SIRIUS Satellite Radio Factory Installed With Lifetime Subscription

MINI USA and SIRIUS Satellite Radio today announced that SIRIUS is available as a factory installed option with a lifetime subscription on the all-new 2007 MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S hardtops produced beginning this June. The lifetime subscription is transferable with the car from one owner to the next.

The factory-installed SIRIUS radio with a lifetime subscription will be available for an MSRP of $950. MINI USA will also offer SIRIUS, with a lifetime subscription, as part of its upgraded Audio Pack that also includes MINI's Hi-Fi sound system, for an MSRP of just $1,400.

Driving Cost Per Mile Calculated at 52.2 Cents for 2007

AAA Calculates Cost of Car Ownership and Operation for 100 Miles of Driving is $52.20

ORLANDO, Fla -- Consumers feeling pinched by increases in day-to-day living expenses can take some comfort in AAA’s annual study of driving costs released today. According to the nation’s largest organization for motorists, the cost of owning and operating a new vehicle in 2007 remains basically unchanged from a year ago at 52.2 cents per mile, or $7,823 per year, when driving 15,000 miles annually.

“While costs for some items such as insurance and financing increased from the start of 2006, a lower cost for fuel at the end of last year offset these expenses resulting in no net increase in the average driving expense for 2007,” said John Nielsen, director of AAA’s Approved Auto Repair network.

Toyota Counters NHTSA Crash Test Result

TOYOTA HAS GONE ON THE offensive to counter a decent score given its Tundra pickup by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its head-on crash test.

NHTSA gave the truck four stars--good but not stellar. Toyota issued a release yesterday arguing that its own data shows a consistent five-rating, per NHTSA criteria. The company, for whom Tundra is a critical product if it is ever to crack the domestic hold on pickup, said, in a release: "We are currently reviewing both our internal data and NHTSA data to see what can be done in the future."
