Mercedes Puts Its Weight Behind C-Class

DETROIT -- Mercedes-Benz is backing its redone C-Class line with what VP-Marketing Steve Cannon said is the biggest model blitz in the automaker's history. Mr. Cannon declined to discuss specifics, but the prior bell-ringer for the brand in terms of spending was in 2002, when it launched the E-Class with $33 million in measured media.

The C-Class launch, breaking Sept. 10, marks the advertiser's return to national broadcast network TV; the last appearance was for the 2002 E-Class effort. The brand has since then relied on spot and regional buys.

The brand, which ran an emotional "Falling in Love" campaign in the late 1990s, is steering into rational territory.

OilWatchdog: Labor Day Gives Oil Companies Another Dip Into Arizona Drivers' Wallets

Consumer Group Offers "Hot Fuel Ripoff" Stickers to Counter Exxon Mobil Ploy at Arizona Gas Stations

SANTA MONICA -- "Hot fuel" will be taking a last summer bite from Arizona drivers heading out for Labor Day in continued triple-digit heat, said OilWatchdog.org. When gasoline reaches 100 degrees and above, which is likely in Arizona during its long heat wave, drivers lose about $1.50 worth of energy on a 20-gallon fill-up -- even at current lower prices.

"Drivers' losses boost the bottom line of oil companies," said Judy Dugan, research director of OilWatchdog.org and its nonprofit, nonpartisan sponsor, the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights.

Credit crunch cools demand for automobiles

Just when the U.S. automotive sector looked to be getting its legs underneath it after a years-long slump, another stumbling block has come along to knock it off kilter — the credit crunch.

The ongoing pain in the housing sector — including higher monthly payments for some owners and declining home values for others — is persuading many Americans that buying a car is not a good idea right now, according to market research company CNW Marketing Research.

Recent polling by the company shows that nearly 18 percent of people in the market for a car or a truck are delaying their purchases because of home-related issues, up from 9 percent in 2006.

Toyota, Sony working together in robotics

TOKYO -- Toyota and Sony, two of Japan's biggest technology names, are getting together in robotics, both sides said Monday, to develop an innovative, intelligent, single-seat vehicle.

But don't expect Toyota Motor Corp. to resurrect Sony's now defunct Aibo dog robot -- as some devoted robot fans may be hoping.

Sony Corp.'s technology for Aibo and the childlike Qrio is still being kept in-house at the Japanese electronics and entertainment company, said Sony spokesman Tomio Takizawa.

The technology sale, including key patents, from Sony to Toyota completed earlier this year applies to the next-generation "transporter," both sides said. Financial details of the deal are not being disclosed.

Seven Sony researchers are temporarily working in Toyota's partner robot research unit to help relay the technology to Toyota, Toyota spokeswoman Kayo Doi said.

Nissan's Rogue Joins Cast of 'Heroes'

DETROIT -- Nissan North America will have an encore performance on NBC's hit "Heroes," acting again as the sole TV advertiser, with limited interruption, during the show's sophomore season premiere Sept. 24. But that's just the beginning, as the automaker will ride along with "Heroes" wherever consumers encounter the show.

Nissan will use the series premiere to unveil a premiere of its own, its small SUV, the Rogue, said Steve Kerho, Nissan's director-interactive marketing and media. Nissan has four minutes of commercial time during the show's first episode, and the Rogue will also appear in the program throughout the season as part of a product-integration deal.

The automaker was pleased with the results for last season's "Heroes" partnership; the show's viewers were twice as likely to recall the Nissan model spots compared to ads from rival automakers and the brand's click-through rate from NBC.com was three times its average.

Volvo: Safe and Sexy?

Can a brand be both safe and sexy?

Volvo is trying to walk that marketing tightrope with a global ad campaign starting next month that aims to capture car buyers by tapping into the fun people have with their friends and families, rather than focusing on its latest safety feature.

It is a big departure for Volvo, whose brand image has long been associated with safety, a result of many years of marketing that emphasized safety features in its vehicles. But while that made Volvo popular with families, it hasn't made the brand as attractive for younger people. Facing anemic sales, Volvo, a unit of Ford Motor, hopes the campaign can help change that.

"For the past 10 years or so, everything was about safety," says Pete Favat, chief creative officer of Arnold Worldwide's Boston office, which created the global campaign with independent ad agency Nitro. "Safety is very rational. But a car still has to be sexy. Being with loved ones and going to do cool things together is sexy to us."

The risk is that the new ads could alienate Volvo's traditional buyers, marketing experts warn. "When a brand is true to its origins, it's a success. When it's not, it isn't," says Dean Crutchfield, senior vice president of marketing for Wolff Olins, a branding firm owned by Omnicom Group.

The marketing push includes print and five different television spots under a new tagline: Life Is Better Lived Together. The first ad is to make its debut in U.S. movie theaters on Sept. 7, with the rest of the campaign appearing in other media later. In one 60-second spot, a daredevil couple rides yachts, helicopters and a new Volvo luxury sedan for a breathless meeting celebrating their anniversary.

Other spots are more light-hearted. In one, a couple, their friends and a wayward donkey watch a sunset in Italy after nearly colliding with the animal in a new Volvo. In another, a fleece-clad couple picks up a climber and hikers on an Italian mountainside while a version of the children's song "The Wheels on the Bus" plays in the background.

Kelley Blue Book Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Edsel

IRVINE, Calif. -- Kelley Blue Book celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the day Ford Motor Company released the Edsel for sale to the general public, September 4, 2007. On November 19, 1959, just two years, two months and 15 days after the first Edsel was introduced to the American driver, it disappeared from the landscape. On that day, it joined more than 2,000 other vehicle brands that met with an abrupt demise.

"For years, the Edsel was the brunt of cheap jokes on television, in the magazines and even as part of some off-color jokes; but out of those ashes, people who own an Edsel have seen interest in the vehicle and its values rise like the Phoenix," said Phil Skinner, collector car market editor and automotive historian at Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. "Today Edsel owners are very proud of their cars and some have even been financially rewarded."

Ads to go: US drivers ease fuel costs with 'car-wraps'

To some people a car is just a set of wheels, but to an increasing number of Americans - especially those pinched by high petrol prices - it's also a mobile billboard, an opportunity to rake in advertising dollars by touting the virtues of Coca-Cola, Nestlé or Citibank.

Car-wrapping, as the concept is known, has been around for the past five or six years, but with petrol now selling for well north of $3 (£1.50)a gallon in many parts of the United States, and many vehicles remaining obstinately inefficient in their fuel use, it has grown into a full-blown trend.

In cities like Los Angeles or New York, it's not uncommon now to see the latest drama serial from HBO, the prestigious cable television station responsible for The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, being advertised on people's private cars. Quite what gets advertised on which vehicles depends on the habit of the individual driver and the demographic the advertiser is trying to reach.

The leading pioneer of car-wrapping, an LA-based firm called FreeCar Media, interviews each would-be car-wrap volunteer. A suburban "soccer mom" who ferries her children to school and sports games might be induced to advertise laundry detergent, say.

Sometimes FreeCar Media will install a GPS tracking device on the advertiser's car. Occasionally it will supply the vehicle for the advertising campaign (a hearse for Six Feet Under, say). More often it will fork out several hundred dollars a month in exchange for the bodywork-rental rights.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Instead of requiring a system that automatically inflates under-inflated tires, the Federal government is spending big money on an ad campaign to warn motorists about the dangers of driving with tires that are under-inflated.

Orlando inventor Clyde Stech who pioneered and patented tire inflation and other systems for the trucking industry in the early 90s, says he was surprised to hear about the ad campaign.

He has a patent with the US Patent Office for a system called the MAXAIR-ATMI that constantly monitors tire pressure on passenger vehicles and automatically fills the tires with air even while the car is moving.

Honda Tries to Recapture Hybrid Mojo

honnewhyb.jpgPeter Kessner, a devout environmentalist, bought a Honda Civic hybrid four years ago to show everyone that he wants to save the planet.

The only problem: no one noticed, since, other than the hybrid badge on the trunk, it looked like a regular Civic. So he traded it in for a Toyota Prius. Suddenly, strangers began stopping him on the street to ask about his hybrid, with its space-age styling and miserly mileage.

"That's a big part of why I bought the Prius," says the Floral Park, N.Y., retiree. "It opens up conversations, and I push my theory that we've got to do our best to conserve." The Honda, on the other hand, didn't deliver what Kessner craved: green street cred. "If I'm driving a hybrid," he says, "I want people to know it."

The significance of the Ford Verve Concept is that it's the first physical evidence of the design direction for an all-new small Ford since it was announced earlier this year that the European arm of the company's global Product Development group is taking the design and engineering lead in creating a new small-car portfolio for major world markets.

INGOLSTADT, Germany - In round nine of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the Audi R10 TDI remains unbeaten: Allan McNish (Scotland) and Dindo Capello (Italy) scored an LM P1 category victory ahead of their team mates Marco Werner (Germany) and Emanuele Pirro (Italy) at Mosport (Canada).

Honda's Solid Performance In The Turkish GP

01_s.jpgThe Honda Racing F1 Team put in an impressive performance in the Turkish Grand Prix. From the back row of the grid Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello moved steadily through the field to finish the race in 13th and 17th positions.

Engine issues discovered after Saturday’s qualifying session forced the team to change the engines in both RA107s, giving both drivers their grid penalty.

Rubens was able to gain positions at the start due to the first-lap melee while Jenson’s start was compromised when he had to move wide at the first corner to avoid a spinning Jarno Trulli. He recovered well and went on to overtake four cars in the following two laps.

Honda's Dixon Takes Championship Lead With Infineon Victory

02_s.jpgDario Franchitti dominated Sunday’s Motorola Indy 300 at Infineon Raceway, but contact with teammate Marco Andretti with only 11 laps remaining resulted in the victory going to title rival Scott Dixon, who now assumes a narrow four-point lead in the intense championship battle with just two races remaining in the 2007 IndyCar Series.

Starting from the pole, Franchitti led 62 of the 80 laps around the hilly, 11-turn Infineon road course, dropping out of the lead only during the exchange of routine pit stops.

But it was just after the last of those stops, as Andretti exited pit lane, that the pair made light contact entering the uphill Turn Two. Andretti retired on the spot, while Franchitti continued with damage to his left front wing that would hamper his handling for the remainder of the race.

Subaru's new ad campaign emphasizes brand image

SUBARU HAS LAUNCHED A RAFT of new TV ads to promote the company's lineup of 2008 vehicles.

Although creatively and thematically different for each vehicle, the new print and TV ads are intended to further the company's efforts this year to promote the new lineup while driving home a Subaru identity around adventure, fun and all-wheel drive: Each of the ads ends with an overarching Subaru message that each vehicle is ready for something different.

The company's challenge in terms of brand-building may be a strength in marketing strategy, say analysts, who note that the company has adhered to a modus operandi of targeting defined niches. The company has historically pitched cars like the WRX Impreza to younger consumers, who are fans of compact import cars that can be modified and personalized. Meanwhile, the company pitches wagons like Forrester and Outback (for which the company has in the past signed spokespeople like Paul Hogan and Lance Armstrong), to people about as likely to attend a Hot Import Nights show as a 20-something car tuner is to learn bird calls.

The effort--via DDB New York, Subaru's AOR since 2004--ties the brand together with a fun, freedom, adventure, confidence and control ethos. Ads, some of which started in June, focus on the 2008 versions of the Tribeca crossover SUV, the Impreza four- and five-door, the Outback sport-utility wagon and the Legacy sport sedan.

The newest of the ads, launching this week, for Impreza, take the unusual tack of referencing the print ads from the same campaign. They use the tag-line: "It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru." They all tout Subaru's all-wheel drive.

GM taking another swipe at Toyota, Honda

DETROIT -- General Motors is targeting the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in its Chevrolet Malibu marketing campaign this fall.

"Without getting into a lot of specifics, we are going to clearly identify that we're competing in the segment with the Camry and the Accord and that we feel we've got the best car in the segment," said GM's Mark LaNeve, vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing, in an interview with Automotive News.

GM's customer research shows that import-brand owners would be willing to buy an American car that is as good as or better than an import, LaNeve said.

The Malibu "campaign is designed from every aspect to prove that we have built a car that is equal to or better than those two competitors," he said. "We're going to be saying we've got one that's just as good and here's why."

This would not be the first time GM has tried to prove it has a better car than the import automakers. GM put a Camry and Accord in Saturn dealerships this year so customers could drive and compare them with the Saturn Aura mid-sized sedan. La-Neve said GM has no plan to do the same with the Malibu at Chevrolet dealerships.

Honda beefs up the Accord for 2008

BOSTON -- Honda has made the redesigned 2008 Accord bigger, with a more aggressive look aimed at catching the eye of younger buyers.

The sedan version goes on sale Sept. 12. The coupe will follow on Sept. 20.

The eighth-generation Accord is the first vehicle equipped with the company's latest variable-cylinder technology. It also is the first Accord with Honda's advanced compatibility engineering body structure, which helps protect occupants during a crash.

Another first: Four-wheel disc brakes and vehicle stability assist will come standard across the line. Also, the Accord gets MP3 capability and auxiliary audio input jacks for the first time.

The basics: The sedan and coupe are bigger and more powerful than their predecessors. They feature Honda Division's most powerful V-6 engine ever: a 3.5-liter that makes 268 hp. A 190-hp inline four-cylinder engine powers the more upscale four-cylinder trim lines and the entry-level coupe models. The base four-cylinder makes 177 hp.

Five-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available for most trim lines. The EX V-6 coupe is equipped with a six-speed manual.

Buick may be ripe for expansion

DETROIT - Buick's high customer satisfaction rankings and its recent jump to tie Lexus at the top of J.D. Power and Associates' 2007 Vehicle Dependability Study has General Motors executives considering more vehicles for Buick.

"We think we've got room for expansion in the Buick lineup, and we see Buick over time hitting that space in the market where today Acura is, Volvo is - that's its historic position, where it's a cut above Dodge, Chrysler and Ford," said Mark La-Neve, GM's vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing in an interview with Automotive News. "It was always a near-luxury premium car."

LaNeve said GM is considering molding the future Buick lineup to resemble Buick China's offering: "By leveraging some of the products that we're going to be introducing in China over a period of years, we can augment the Buick lineup to really slot it in a very sophisticated place in the market above the mainstream."

Gov't getting serious about fuel economy

WASHINGTON -- While Congress debates massive changes in fuel economy law, the EPA is writing up broad new rules to limit fuel consumption.

The EPA has mustered 75 regulators to execute President Bush's so-called "20-in-10" plan to reduce gasoline consumption by 20 percent in 10 years.

The move, sparked by a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling this spring, signals the Bush administration's desire for a historic shift of responsibility for fuel economy standards from transportation officials to clean-air regulators, a top EPA official told Automotive News last week.

"It is a pretty historic effort to set the first regulatory program for greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act," Margo Oge, director of the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality, said in an interview.

The office long has been responsible for traditional tailpipe pollutants, such as oxides of nitrogen. It now is writing rules to limit emissions of carbon dioxide, a byproduct of burning fuel that contributes to global warming.

Oge says the 20-in-10 plan is the centerpiece of planned greenhouse gas emissions rules for cars and trucks. In an executive order in May, Bush instructed that the 20-in-10 plan be "a starting point."

The plan, unveiled in his State of the Union address in January, calls for production of 35 billion gallons of alternative fuels by 2017, about five times today's amount. It also calls for fuel economy increases of up to 4 percent a year for 2010-17 cars and for 2012-17 trucks.

Mortgage mess hits auto market

The collapse of the subprime home mortgage market is infecting the U.S. auto industry.

Car and truck buyers, especially those with lower credit scores, often are finding it harder to get financing. Vehicle-loan delinquencies are rising among higher-risk customers. And as budget-squeezed consumers put off vehicle purchases, industry forecasters are cutting their sales predictions for 2007.

The mortgage mess and falling home values are weakening consumer confidence in a way that threatens other big-ticket purchases, industry executives say.

"Outside of a home, a car is one of the biggest things we purchase," Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally said last week. "When you look at all of the things that are happening right now in the United States, it's a watch item. It's something we really have to pay attention to."

Last week, the National Automobile Dealers Association scaled back its 2007 sales forecast, in part because of the battered mortgage market. In February, NADA chief economist Paul Taylor predicted that U.S. sales of new cars and light trucks this year would roughly equal the 2006 mark of 16.5 million. Now Taylor predicts 2007 sales could dip as low as 16.1 million units.

Dennis Graham, an analyst with the Plante and Moran consulting firm, says U.S. sales could fall below 16 million vehicles this year. That would make 2007 the worst year since 1998, when the industry sold 15.6 million cars and trucks in the United States.

Taming Ford's product complexity

DETROIT -- Alan Mulally's bid to transform Ford Motor Co. with global vehicles is gaining traction -- meaning fewer platforms and more shared versions of the automaker's most popular U.S. cars are on the way.

Ford's next-generation Focus small car and Fusion mid-sized car will be sold globally, Mulally said last week. He didn't provide timing, but suppliers and industry analysts expect Ford to begin building a global Focus in North America in 2010 or 2011. A global mid-sized car is expected later next decade, probably with the U.S.-market Fusion migrating to the European Mondeo platform.

With his global vehicle strategy, Mulally is trying to reduce costs, leverage resources and take advantage of product advances Ford has made in other parts of the world. The approach will let Ford reduce the number of its platforms, engine architectures and component designs.

Mulally said the current product complexity was his biggest surprise after becoming Ford's CEO last September.

"We all kind of had to suck it up and say, this is an opportunity rather than a problem," said Mulally, who met with reporters last week before his first anniversary at Ford.

Automakers ready to move against Chinese knockoffs

German carmakers BMW and Smart plan to take legal action against Chinese copies of their models making an appearance at the upcoming IAA in Frankfurt.

Automobilwoche reported that the two carmakers are paying special attention to see if the SUV models CEO and UFO and the compact car, Noble, will be on display at the IAA. The three bear a striking resemblance to the X5 from BMW, Toyota's RAV4 and the Smart Fortwo.

"We've already taken measures against the distribution of the CEO in Europe," a BMW spokesperson told Automobilwoche. "We'll consider taking legal action should the car be shown at the IAA."

A Daimler spokesperson said the same. "We reserve the right to take legal action should the car, in fact, be shown at the IAA," a Daimler spokesperson told Automobilwoche. The German carmaker might also take general steps to protect the Smart design against the Chinese carmaker Shuanghuan, which makes the CEO.

Ford to Resurrect 'Have You Driven...' Slogan

DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Co. needs to do a better job with vehicle branding and marketing, according to CEO Alan Mulally, and he would like to resurrect the old marketing slogan, "Have you driven a Ford lately?"

Ford has changed model names too frequently for no good reason, Mulally said during a dinner with reporters Wednesday.

"I can remember saying to my team, 'How do you pick these names? It seems to me you just put out another product every year, you kill the last year's one, you look in the dictionary and find another word that starts with E or F and you slap it on it,' " he said.

He wants to stick with vehicle names for the long term and continue to improve the underlying product. That approach has worked well for other automakers, such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which rarely change model names.

"We're going to improve it year after year forever," Mulally said. "There's not enough money in the world to let any of that brand equity get diminished."
