Audi's Emanuelle Pirro talks about Road America

audi_motorsport-070720-1677.jpgINGOLSTADT, Germany - Road America plays host to the American Le Mans Series on 11 August. Audi is unbeaten to date on the 4.048 mile circuit. Last year’s winner Emanuele Pirro (Italy) talks about the fastest circuit of the season with its average lap speed of approximately 132 mph.

The previous circuits were very difficult for the Audi R10 TDI. Are you looking forward to Road America?

"It’s great knowing that we’ll be driving on a fast circuit again, which suits our Audi R10 TDI a little more. We’ll have less of a disadvantage compared to 330 pound lighter LM P2 cars at Road America. However, the fundamental problem remains until such time as the regulations change, which is expected to be in 2008.”

GM says it could lead electric car race

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - General Motors Corp. has signed an agreement with a battery maker that could propel it ahead of Toyota Motor Corp. in the race to bring plug-in hybrid and electric cars to market, a top company official said Thursday.

A123 Systems Inc., based in Watertown, Mass., already produces millions of nanophosphate lithium-ion batteries for use in cordless power tools, and it plans to apply the technology to automobiles.

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said the deal, coupled with a published report that Toyota Motor Corp. would delay launches of lithium-ion battery powered hybrids for up to two years, could give GM the lead in bringing the new clean technology to market.

Better fuel economy could cost car buyers

The government has yet to require higher fuel efficiency from the auto industry, but some manufacturers are already bracing for much stricter standards. Chrysler Group even went so far as to scrap plans for a new luxury vehicle that had been in the works.

Industry insiders insist consumers should be bracing too — for significantly higher prices and far fewer choices.

Last month the Senate passed a bill that would increase the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for all passenger cars and trucks by about 40 percent. That would require automakers to raise the average gas mileage of their vehicles to 35 mpg by 2020. A proposal in the House would hold manufacturers to those standards as early as 2018.

The legislature is far from putting such changes into law. But observers say stricter standards — in some form — appear to be inevitable.

And buyers, beware. The impact on consumers is likely to be more than just the ability to get farther on a gallon of gas.

Toyota Tundra will meet U.S. sales targets

Toyota Motor Corp., challenging U.S.-based automakers' edge in full-size pickups, will meet its 2007 sales goal of 200,000 Tundra trucks even in a market "a little softer" than forecast, its U.S. sales chief said Thursday.

"We're on pace right now," Jim Lentz, executive vice president of Toyota's U.S. sales unit, said in an interview in Traverse City, at the auto industry's 2007 Management Briefing Seminars. "We're spending the incentives necessary, given the economics, given a down market, to sell that 200,000 vehicles."

Toyota, which doesn't disclose incentive spending by model, disputes Edmunds.com's estimate that it put $6,861 last month on each Tundra. Toyota sold 23,150 Tundras in July, a monthly record for the model.

Japan's largest automaker wants to establish the Tundra in the full-size pickup segment dominated by Ford Motor Co.'s F- Series, General Motors Corp.'s Silverado and Chrysler LLC's Ram. The push comes amid a 2007 U.S. sales decline of 4.9 percent in the category.

Auto industry changed by inexorable forces

TRAVERSE CITY -- Leaders of the U.S. auto industry adjourned their annual conference here Friday and returned to a business landscape forever altered by an unprecedented intervention of outside forces.

Speaker after speaker at the annual Management Briefing Seminars said the biggest change since last year's event is the tidal wave of outside capital and outside management that has swept through Detroit.

Two of Detroit's Big Three automakers are now led by CEOs from other industries and major suppliers including Delphi Corp. and Dana Corp. -- along with carmaker Chrysler -- are in the hands of private-equity firms.

At the same time, increasingly aggressive intervention from federal and state lawmakers has cast a pall over the industry that even the most successful automakers cannot escape.

Alan Mulally, hired last fall from Boeing Co. to lead Ford Motor Co.'s turnaround, said the reason outside forces have taken the lead in Detroit is simple.

"This is a business that needs to be run as a business," Mulally said, adding that the downturn has created opportunities for new leadership. "It's continuing to bring more and more business focus to our industry."

Toyota downplays plug-in cars

TRAVERSE CITY -- Plug-in electric cars aren't likely the panacea they're being made out to be by a public eager for alternatives to the traditional gasoline engine, a Toyota Motor Co. engineer said on Friday.

A number of serious hurdles stand between current technology and the reality of getting plug-ins on the road, Justin Ward, an engineer with Toyota's Advanced Technology Vehicles, said to an industry gathering at the annual Management Briefing Seminars. Even if the vehicles do make it to market, he said, data shows a battery-powered plug-in may be no more efficient in reducing carbon dioxide emissions than the gas-electric hybrids on the road today.

Ward's comments come amid reports that Toyota is delaying its next-generation electric car because of safety concerns, which Toyota didn't confirm. And they stood in contrast to one of General Motors Corp.'s biggest mantras of late: that plug-ins are coming soon and the vehicles will significantly reduce auto-related pollution and U.S. fuel consumption.

Chrysler's global footprint to grow

TRAVERSE CITY -- Chrysler LLC plans to open engineering centers in China, Poland and India and is exploring expanding relationships with two Asian automakers as it moves to grow globally in the wake of its failed marriage to Germany's Daimler AG.

The automaker also is hiring engineers at its Auburn Hills headquarters and its proving grounds in Chelsea to help develop new models and technologies, Chrysler product chief Frank Klegon said Thursday at the auto industry's annual Management Briefing Seminars.

"We realize that we can't just be the same company that we were before the 1998 merger with Daimler-Benz," Klegon said. "The competition is tougher, and it's global."

Mulally says Ford on track for '09 profit

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Alan Mulally said on Wednesday the No. 2 U.S. automaker was on track to return to profitability in 2009 despite a forecast for weaker industrywide U.S. sales this year.

Mulally, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference, also said he was "cautiously optimistic" about reaching a deal on wages and benefits with the United Auto Workers union.

"The plan is that we will return to profitability in 2009. And with everything that we see today and our projections — even with the lower overall market — we absolutely believe we can achieve that 2009 (target)," he said.

Chinese maker recalls 250,000 tires

NEWARK, N.J. - A tire importer said Thursday it would recall 255,000 Chinese-made tires it claims were defective because they lack a safety feature that prevents tread separation.

The recall involves half the number of tires that the importer, Foreign Tire Sales Inc., had identified in June as possibly posing a risk.

The models involved are steel-belted radial replacement tires for pickups, vans and sport utility vehicles that consumers bought from early 2004 through mid-2006, Foreign Tire Sales said.

Headstrong CEO could be Chrysler’s tonic

Chrysler took a bold step in its new life as a private company Monday, appointing Bob Nardelli, the controversial former boss of home improvement chain Home Depot, as its new chief executive. The surprise appointment raised eyebrows but could be just the jolt needed to help revive the ailing automaker.

Nardelli, a former high-ranking General Electric executive, left Home Depot under a cloud in January after a shareholder rebellion sparked by his hefty pay and the company’s stagnating stock price. His severance package, worth an estimated $210 million, made him a poster child for excessive executive pay.

Now Nardelli is moving into Chrysler’s corner office as the No. 3 U.S. automaker faces a raft of challenges, including a crucial round of contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union. Chrysler is desperate to secure cuts in pay and benefits to make it more competitive with Japanese heavyweights Nissan, Honda and Toyota.

Giving Saturn another look

Repairing a damaged brand typically takes years, not weeks, but there's some evidence that a confident gamble by Saturn -- long one of General Motors Corp.'s most neglected brands -- has helped jump-start its revival.

From early June through July, most Saturn dealerships displayed and offered test drives not only of the brand's new and highly acclaimed Aura sedan, but also of the industry's top-selling midsize cars: the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

And data and anecdotal evidence from automotive consumer Web sites Edmunds.com and Kelley Blue Book indicate that the initiative, combined with the brand's new and expanded vehicle lineup, helped to attract some shoppers who wouldn't have considered Saturn previously.

"Their consideration seems to be going up," said Jack Nerad, executive market analyst at Kelley Blue Book. "But rebuilding a brand is a slow process. It doesn't happen in days, a model year or perhaps even two model years. ... Still, as that consideration goes up, some of those consumers will buy. Without consideration, you don't get buyers."

Former Ford exec shopping Jag, Land Rover

Another former Ford Motor Co. executive has joined the bidding for Ford's Jaguar and Land Rover brands, the Associated Press reported, citing a person familiar with the negotiations Friday.

Nick Scheele has joined New York-based Ripplewood Holdings LLC in its bid for the luxury brands that cash-strapped Ford is trying to sell, according to the person, who requested anonymity because the bidding is ongoing.

Scheele served as Ford's president and chief operating officer from 2001 until his retirement in 2005. He also led Jaguar from 1992 to 1999.

Scheele's involvement pits him against Jacques Nasser, who was Ford's chief executive from 1999 to 2001. Nasser is leading a separate bid by One Equity Partners LLC, according to the person familiar with the negotiations. Jaguar spokesman Jonathan Griffiths said he couldn't comment Friday.

Study: Untreated Water from Car Washes Affects Water Quality of Local Streams

SEATTLE -- Water quality is at the top of the summer agenda for many municipalities as residents swim, fish and boat in recreational waters. However, many homeowners or organizers of parking lot car washes may not realize the effects of untreated car wash affluent on local water quality.

Environmental Partners, Inc., Issaquah, Seattle, conducted two tests in 2006 to measure the potential impact of untreated car wash discharges into the storm water system (and thereby to streams and lakes) using fish mortality as a measure. GM to end $1 Billion Olympic sponsorship after 2008

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. said Monday it has decided not to renew its $1 billion sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic Committee when its contract ends after 2008.

The company said the move is a result of changes in its marketing strategy and came after GM evaluated the return on its advertising investment.

“We have other avenues to be able to reach this same audience without bearing the expense of being an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic team,” spokeswoman Ryndee Carney said.

UAW, automakers to negotiate over labor gap

DETROIT - As bargainers for the United Auto Workers and the domestic automakers try to reach a new contract, Kenneth Cooksey is one of many workers who doesn't understand why the companies are so focused on the cost of labor.

By most accounts, labor expenses for General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC amount to about 10 percent of the price of a new vehicle, including wages, benefits and "legacy" costs for retiree pensions and health care.

So Cooksey, a 37-year Ford worker from Detroit, doesn't buy the companies' logic that they have to erase a roughly $25 per hour labor cost gap with their Japanese competitors — Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co.

Nissan to offer new collision safety devices

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Some Nissan cars will soon come with a gas pedal that lifts to warn of possible collisions, while the cars will automatically stop if drivers take their foot off the accelerator in response to the warning.

The technology combines radar sensors and a computer system to assess a car’s speed and the distance to a vehicle in front, Nissan Motor Co. said Monday. Cars with the new safety features will be available this year in Japan, and next year in the U.S.

The idea was to make a car that judges dangers on its own, like a friendly animal, so machine and driver can work together, said Nissan Senior Manager Yousuke Akatsu.

Nissan Plans Diesel SUV in Japan

Nissan Motor Co. said it will launch a diesel-powered version of its X-Trail sport-utility vehicle in the domestic market by autumn 2008, testing the Japanese appetite for such fuel-saving cars.

The launch comes almost two-and-half years ahead of schedule and reflects the pressure on auto makers and consumers from high fuel costs. Nissan's last diesel passenger-car offering in Japan was the Sunny in 2002.

Diesel engines in general are 20% to 30% more fuel efficient and emit less carbon dioxide than gasoline engines. But diesel isn't as popular in Japan as in Europe, where about half of all cars sold are powered by diesel engines. Only 0.1% of passenger cars sold in 2006 in Japan were diesel powered, mainly because such cars are considered dirty and noisy, industry players say.

"To be honest, we don't know how far diesel will be accepted in Japan," Yo Usuba, a senior vice president in charge of Nissan's powertrain operations, said at a news conference. "But given the recent high fuel costs...calls for diesel are growing," he added.

The Case for Universal Speed Cameras

Redlightcamera.jpgIn a recent article, Law enforcement has lost control of our roads, we posited that excessive speed has become a public danger.

Unless law enforcement steps up and declares the political will to cut average speeds on our roads by at least 10 mph, the only workable solution is implementing universal speed cameras.

Let's say we are looking a t highway with a posted limit of 55 mph. If universal speed cameras were installed and programmed to automatically issue tickets to every vehicle doing 65 mph or more, the problem would be solved in 180 days.

Law Enforcement Has Lost Control of Our Roads

On a recent Eastern Seaboard driving trip, we experienced 80 mile per hour average speeds on the Washington, D.C. Capitol Beltway, tractor-trailers riding our bumper at 72 miles an hour on the Jersey Turnpike, and the inimitable Damnation Alley experience of Brooklyn's Belt Parkway.

It's no secret that average speeds on our roads now exceed 75 miles per hour, just as we acknowledge that this is dangerous, we have to ask the question:

How did it get like this?

Wolfgang Bernhard is chronically unemployable

wolfgang_bern.jpgThe news is out today that Robert Nardelli has been named CEO of Chrysler, leaving Wolfgang Bernhard left to take his lunchpail back home to Deutschland.

The one-time Chrysler exec has recently been in charge of Mercedes, from which he was fired, and then Volkswagen, from which he was also fired. He briefly campaigned for the Chrysler CEO position, only to be passed over by a Gordon Gekko groupie.

So in the last two years, Bernhard has had two high-profile jobs, only to be fired, and then passed over for one he would have seemed to be a natural fit for.

We're wondering if companies are now using those sneaky psychological profile tests to screen for upper executive suite vacancies. Is it possible that Bernhard doesn't work well with others, can't handle authority and/or has a narcisssistic streak?

No matter, now that he's a "consultant," he won't have to explain the gaps in his resume.

Disgraced Home Depot exec named to head Chrysler

robert_nardelli.jpgRobert Nardelli, the former GE executive that drove away from Home Depot with a $200-million plus severance package after gutting the company, has been named the new CEO of the new Chrysler.

Astonishing. Nardelli did do well with the Depot, but in a rising market. We believe the housing boom masked his weaknesses, as the company's performance showed before he left earlier this year.

This choice by Cerberus, the private equity firm that now owns Chrysler, shows 2 things. First, nothing is sacred. Nardelli will gut the company. Second, it will never be his fault, because that's how these kind of guys operate. It's always something else. Nardelli will ride away from the wreckage of Chrysler, the same way Home Depot stores now feel on the brink of death.

We believe the famous GE management style is overrated and flawed. By focusing on numbers only, and not product, employee or customer satisfaction, these kind of managers are destroying modern business. Chrysler is doomed.

Speaker Pelosi: 'Today We Declare a New Direction in Our Energy Policy - One For Our Future Generations'

WASHINGTON -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke this morning on the House floor in support of her bill, H.R. 3221, New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act. Below are her remarks as prepared:

"My colleagues, today we are faced with a momentous decision on energy and global warming.

"Will we turn toward the future, for the sake of our children and our planet? Or will we remain mired in the disputes and regional differences that have so often prevented the Congress from adopting new, innovative approaches to our energy needs?

"With this bill, the 'New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act,' Congress can indeed take our nation in a New Direction.

"Energy independence is a national security issue, an environmental and health issue, an economic issue, and a moral issue.

U.S. House shifts $16 bln toward renewable energy

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House of Representatives on Saturday passed a Democratic rewrite of U.S. energy policy that strips $16 billion in tax incentives away from Big Oil and puts it toward renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.

The 786-page bill, passed in a rare Saturday vote, was a top priority for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and is an amalgam of bills assembled by about a dozen of the chamber's committees in recent months.

Republicans called it a "no-energy bill" because it lacks new drilling incentives, and they derided the new emphasis on renewables as "green pork." The White House threatened to veto the bill on concerns that it could boost energy prices.

House Republican leader John Boehner said the bill "cuts the lifeblood of our economy off at the knees by increasing taxes to pay for green pork projects," referring to billions of dollars of "energy conservation bonds" that would finance renewable projects.

Faulty switch prompts recall of 3.6M Fords

WASHINGTON - Ford Motor Co. said Friday it is recalling 3.6 million passenger cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to address concerns about a cruise control switch that has led to previous recalls based on reports of fires.

Ford said the recall covered more than a dozen vehicle models built from 1992-2004. The company said it was responding to concerns from owners about the safety of their cars and questions about the speed control deactivation switch in the vehicles that is powered at all times.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker previously had recalled nearly 6 million vehicles beginning in January 2005 because of engine fires linked to the cruise control systems in trucks, SUVs and vans.
