Tiger Woods and Buick: GM Exec Sets Record Straight
By Jim Bunnell
General Manager, Buick-Pontiac-GMC
Recently, it was reported by some media that Buick is "ending its contract" or "rethinking" its association with Tiger Woods. That's not true — but it does make for sensational headlines. I'm writing to set the record straight.
Tiger is a strong spokesperson for Buick, and it's precisely because of his strength as a celebrity that we want to broaden his role within GM. Tiger continues to be an invaluable partner to Buick and to General Motors.

Whilst points leader Uwe Alzen (Germany) secured his third pole of the season, his toughest rival Richard Westbrook (Great Britain) had to settle for 22nd on the grid. Currently ranking second in the series, Westbrook had no explanation for the 1.2 second time difference to Alzen. In free practice Westbrook had turned some of the quickest times on the 2.3 kilometre street circuit.

Modern Pirate Adventure Delays Volvo Contest
Controversy Sparked by $500 Million Real-Life Treasure Find
Adds New Mystery and Intrigue to Final Leg of Volvo's Online Hunt
IRVINE, Calif. -- In a twist worthy of any great pirate story, Volvo Car Corporation today upped anchor - at least temporarily - on the last crucial leg of its global online treasure hunt: the retrieval of a prize treasure chest filled with $50,000 in gold and a key to a new Volvo from the sea floor.
The retrieval of the chest will hang in the balance until controversy dies down over the discovery of real life treasure by Volvo's Hunt partner, Odyssey Marine Exploration.
Earlier this year, Volvo selected Odyssey, the world leader in deep-ocean shipwreck exploration, to sink a treasure chest with one goal: to create an authentic, exciting treasure hunt to promote Disney's ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.'
Veiled in secrecy, Odyssey scouted locations in the Western Mediterranean, finally zeroing in on a perfect spot off the coast of Gibraltar. They had planned to take the winner of The Hunt, 23-year-old Alena Zvereva from Ekaterinburg, Russia, out to retrieve the treasure from its secret location when the operation hit an unprecedented snag: Odyssey found real treasure. And a media storm ensued.
"We thought sinking a real treasure chest, filled with $50,000 in gold doubloons and a key to a new Volvo, and creating a global treasure hunt for 22 markets was challenging," said Linda Gangeri, national advertising manager, Volvo Cars of North America. "But that was, quite literally, a drop in the ocean compared to the storm our attempted retrieval process has stirred up."

Mercedes develops new production process for lightweight body parts

Designed to conceal an integrated aerial, a new type of roof element for the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is playing a groundbreaking role in the automotive industry’s use of the paint film coating process, which relies on a special paint-coated plastic film for manufacturing body parts.
This new process cuts costs and may well develop into a key technology for the production of lightweight vehicle parts. In the long term, it also opens up new avenues for vehicle designers, who will be able to use the process to integrate aerials and sensors directly into plastic body parts.
Once upon a time, listening to your car radio was a very simple matter - all you needed to tune in to your favorite station was a trusty rod aerial, usually affixed to the fender.
Today, however, a luxury car can be fitted with as many as 18 different aerials - not only to receive radio and TV programs, but also for telecommunications, navigation, telematics, remote-control functions and proximity-control systems.

Mercedes: Engineering Tolerance
“As exact as necessary and as generous as possible”: Simulated Tolerance
Tolerance is crucial - not only in society but also in mechanical engineering, where designers have to incorporate a certain amount of leeway so as to ensure that components both function reliably and are economical to manufacture.
Researchers and developers at DaimlerChrysler are now investigating ways of enhancing the management of tolerances in the design and production of the engine and powertrain.
Amazement is actually the appropriate reaction when taking possession of a new car. Amazement that all the different elements fit together perfectly - despite the numerous components and production stages involved.

Mercedes Uses Virtual Reality to Study Driver's Worldview

A good view of other road users is crucial for safe driving. A-pillars or B-pillars that are too thick can restrict a driver’s field of vision and quickly lead to danger.
Now, virtual reality specialists at DaimlerChrysler Research have developed a visualization process that enables developers to realistically assess how vehicle design affects a driver’s field of vision - before a new model even exists.
Maybe it’s a good thing that Bettina Westerburg and Ralf Specht didn’t opt for careers in an automobile showroom. When asked about the availability of one vehicle, the DaimlerChrysler researchers reply that there are no plans to build it in its present design.
As for the other model - a strikingly beautiful roadster that the visitor can hardly wait to put through its paces - they can only shrug apologetically and explain that the car won’t be hitting the market for another three years.

Mercedes Testing Cars That Talk to Each Other

From Car to Car: Warning drivers of local hazards in real time
As part of their WILLWARN project, DaimlerChrysler researchers have demonstrated that spontaneous and flexible WLAN radio networks make it possible for vehicles to warn each other about sudden road hazards - even over great distances.
The exchange of data can also be used to provide up-to-date traffic information over complete areas - a feature that will be necessary if future traffic guidance systems are to reduce the time drivers waste in traffic jams - and thus help cut emissions.

Mercedes Abuses Dr. Oscar For Your Comfort

Introducing Dr. Oscar: A dummy that makes subjective perceptions objectively measurable
Climate control experts from DaimlerChrysler haven’t been particularly nice to Dr. Oscar. Recently, for example, they raised his temperature significantly by pointing a heater at his head for half an hour.
On another occasion, it looked like they were trying to put Dr. Oscar into deep-freeze hibernation by exposing him to a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius. Dr. Oscar is a tough customer, though - and he doesn’t hold any grudges about the tortures he’s been put through. He always remains calm and cool - which isn’t surprising, given that Dr. Oscar is a test dummy. Still, he’s anything but stupid, and he’s also remarkably sensitive (see box „Dr. Oscar’s inner values“).
Dr. Oscar, who also goes by the more serious name of ambient climate measurement dummy, is the faithful servant of a passenger car development team headed by Florian Kauf. Dr. Oscar’s 118 sensors provide the engineers with a precise overview of temperature distribution and airflows in a vehicle’s occupant cell. Climate measurement tests performed with Dr. Oscar deliver clear results rather than soft assessments such as “maybe it’s a little too cold,” or “I think there might be a draft coming from somewhere.”

NASCAR Files $100 Million Countersuit Against AT&T
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing filed a $100 million counter suit last week against AT&T claiming that the wireless carrier is interfering with its exclusive sponsorship agreement with Nextel.
The suit comes just weeks after a U.S. District judge allowed AT&T to replace the Cingular logo on Jeff Burton’s No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet with AT&T branding. Burton's car is sponsored by Cingular, however, after AT&T took ownership of Cingular, AT&T said it planned to eliminate the Cingular brand name.
NASCAR officials have repeatedly not allowed AT&T to switch the logo because of NASCAR’s deal with Nextel, which sponsors NASCAR's top series the Nextel Cup.
NASCAR’s suit, filed June 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, also alleges “ambush” marketing and claims breach of contract, fraud and misrepresentation.

BMW Markets Driving School as Chance to "Relearn to Drive"

"Relearn to Drive" Encourages Drivers to Consider New Skills Needed for Today
Woodcliff Lake -- With a new campaign featuring offbeat characters from driving lessons past, BMW of North America will encourage drivers to consider how times have changed since their first lesson - and who taught them.
With elements such as an independent, non-branded micro-site and viral videos, BMW of North America tackles more than just what car to drive as it launches "Relearn to Drive," a creative campaign for the BMW Performance Driving School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with Austin-based GSD&M.
The campaign, which begins Tuesday, June 19, aims to bring the BMW Performance Driving School to life by posing the question, "Who taught you to drive?"
The campaign will drive people to visit www.RelearnToDrive.com, which is centered on the idea that much of what drivers originally learned was incorrect or no longer applies, and the BMW Performance Driving School is the place to right those wrongs.

Test Driving the 2007 BMW 328i Convertible -- The Ultimate Tanning Machine

The first question to deal with in reviewing the BMW 328i hardtop convertible is this -- does it deliver a true coupe experience with the top up?
The short answer: yes.
We were shocked at how the car, with the top up, delivered a true no-compromise ride that is capable of making you forget you actually also have a convertible. And this is a vital question for this category of vehicle, because some folks just can't afford to own three cars -- two for the family and one, just for fun.
So right off the bat, if you're looking to drop a little under $50,000, you can indeed get 2 BMWs for the price of one.
With the top up, and thanks to the ample coupe glass, full-sized rear window and mercifully high ceilings [some convertible are smush boxes with the top up], and the hard top, the car drives just like one with a fancy, electrically powered, fully articulated drop top.

How Would Jesus Drive?
The Vatican has issued their "Ten Commandments of Driving," citing the fundamental place motor vehicles have in our lives, and acknowledging that many of us simply don't drive like we ever heard of the maxim, "Love One Another."
Here are the Mobile Commandments:
1. You shall not kill.
2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

Is the Enclave Buick's Breakthrough Vehicle?

The 2008 Buick Enclave is the capstone to GM's deliberate repositioning of the brand, and from the looks of the fairly bold and solid vehicle, we think it marks the demarcation point where the line's future begins.
This past Sunday, we noticed Tiger Wood's golf bag was emblazoned with the Enclave nameplate, and whatever Buick pays him, they are getting their money's worth.
Tiger as a brand is so convincing, and so powerful among the golfing set where Buick can hope to capture new, and perhaps some old customers, that whatever they pay him is a bargain -- because he is driving people into the showroom, at least to take a look.
We took these shots of the Enclave at Arnold Buick in West Babylon, NY, where General Manager Bill Tuchler told us, "We sell every one we get -- and we're placing orders over our allocation."

Top 10 Driving Mistakes Teenagers Make
The most common mistakes are:
Being distracted behind the wheel: Cell phones, CDs, food and even text messages can pose serious distractions to drivers. In some cases, drivers will even text message their backseat passengers. Distracted driving contributes to 80 percent of collisions.
Taking too many risks: Actions like ignoring traffic signals or school zone signs and changing lanes without checking blind spots are all considered "risky behavior." The difference between risky behavior and distracted driving is that risky behavior is deliberate, while distracted driving is often the result of ignorance.

For Mercedes Accident Research - Reality Is the Benchmark

-- Accident Research as a Basis for Improving Safety
-- Systematic accident research at Mercedes since 1969
-- To date, some 3,800 serious road-traffic accidents reconstructed and analyzed
On a cold, gray winter's day in January 1969, government officials and senior police officers from Baden-Württemberg met up with representatives of the then Daimler-Benz AG for several hours of talks at the state's Interior Ministry. On the agenda was an unusual request on the part of the automotive company - an appeal for police assistance in reconstructing and analyzing road-traffic accidents involving Mercedes models.

Mercedes Safety Experience: From the Crash Crumple Zone to the Safety Network

Although automobile developers were already thinking about continually improving the driving safety of their vehicles more than 100 years ago, occupant protection itself is a relatively young development discipline. Its story really began on August 1, 1939.
Like many other big stories, it started off small - in a wooden shed on the outskirts of the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen. Measuring nine by 12 meters, the shed housed the workshop of Béla Barényi, a young, talented, impatient engineer whose stated aim was to revolutionize automotive technology. “The axles, body shell, frame and steering of the cars of the future will all have to be different from today’s,” he explained to Wilhelm Haspel, then Chairman of the Board at Daimler-Benz, at the job interview.

Mercedes: Tech Systems Can Reduce Driver Error

Mercedes assistance systems honed for real-life accident scenarios
Substantial decrease in the number of serious driver-related accidents, rear-end collisions, and accidents involving pedestrians
PRE-SAFE® Brake lessens accident severity by up to 40 percent
New blind-sport assistant ensures safe lane changes
Because of big advances in passive safety systems, the focus of development work is now increasingly shifting to the creation of preventive protection techniques such as PRE-SAFE® and the avoidance of accidents altogether. Mercedes-Benz will continue to contribute to this development in order to increase road safety.

Mercedes Uses Brain Research to Develop Safety Tech

Fatigue recognition system undergoing field testing
The primary objective of the Mercedes safety concept is to avoid accidents. And avoiding accidents starts with people. Whoever sits behind the wheel should be completely fit on all counts - and must remain so during the journey.
That’s why Mercedes-Benz develops vehicles that are less stressful to drive, while also being a pacesetter in the development of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems. This commitment comes under a heading that Mercedes-Benz defined 25 years ago: physiological safety.

Mercedes Researches Video, Radar Safety Systems

Combined radar and video-based assistance systems
Traffic signs displayed on dashboard screen
Warnings and automatic braking impulses when vehicle veers from the lane
Motion recognition with stereo camera calculates danger of an accident in advance
Local road-hazard warnings via vehicle-to-vehicle communication
Following the successful introduction of DISTRONIC PLUS, BAS PLUS, and the PRE-SAFE®- brake, Mercedes-Benz is now working on the next generation of assistance systems that will help drivers deal safely with other types of critical situations.
In doing so, Mercedes engineers continue to take their cue from real-life situations by configuring their systems on the basis of actual accidents and the latest accident research results. The goals of the assistance system research projects are to prevent accidents that result from excessive speed and lane departures, and to make driving safer in typical accident-prone areas, such as intersections, junctions and construction sites.
