Final Road Trip for Johnny Cash Bus Will Be to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

jccoach.jpgCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- JC Unit 1, Johnny Cash's tour bus that's "been everywhere," will take its place in history at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Originally built and restored in Ohio, the coach comes full circle when it also takes its final resting place in Ohio.

Cash used the vehicle for all his tours, including the 1991 Highwayman Tour, where the vehicle also ferried Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Johnny sold the bus three months before his death in 2003 to the American Heritage Music Foundation in Blytheville, Arkansas.

They in turn sold it to MotoeXotica in St. Louis, Missouri, who auctioned it on e-Bay in 2005. The bus was purchased by Dave Wright, a collector of vintage motor coaches. Wright had Creative Mobile Interiors, a custom conversion specialist in Grove City, Ohio, restore the bus.

Before donating the coach to the Hall of Fame, he loaned the coach to The Tennessee Three, Cash's band, for a cross-country tour. After the tour, the bus went to Fender Museum of Music and the Arts in California for a short visit before coming back to Ohio. The bus is again at Creative Mobile Interiors for some final sprucing up before heading up to Cleveland.

Get out of your SUV lease

NEW YORK -- So you've got two years left on the lease for your Lincoln Navigator, but filling the tank is beginning to take its toll.

Breaking the lease is not really an option. Fees can run to thousands of dollars. So more and more people are turning to the Web to find people who can take over the leases. There are two major sites, LeaseTrader.com and swapalease.com.

Both have seen big growth. Starting from zero about eight years ago, swapalease now brokers about 7,000 deals a year, according to Scot Hall, a company executive.

LeaseTrader is a bit older and larger, on track to handle about 35,000 transactions this year, according to LeaseTrader President Sergio Stiberman.

Stiberman said he has seen a 30 percent increase in people looking to sell their SUV leases this year.

"They definitely mention gas prices as a reason for getting out," said LeaseTrader spokesman John Sternal.

Got Pollen? Get a Car Duster!

cacadu.jpg

We love washing our cars, but with all the trees in full flower our vehicles are getting drenched in a veritable pollen shower.

Maybe if you have a banana yellow Ferrari it won't show up as bad, but the sallow dusting is a bummer for everyone else.

So Dad got himself a "California" Car Duster as an early Father's Day gift -- and he actually uses it! He reports it takes about five minutes to wipe down the exterior, and it's holding off the trip to the car wash, a $7.50 expense, by several days.

At Target, the long-handled duster was about $15; the interior brush -- good for keeping the pollen that comes in through the vents off your dash -- was about $10. So for $25, I figure this is an accessory that really does pay for itself pretty quick. And it's kind of fun to use.

Safety Check: Windshield Wipers Are Vital Safety Equipment

wornoutwiper.jpg

In our view, windshield wipers are one of the most important pieces of safety technology in a car, yet they fail most often due to simple neglect. People think about fixing their brakes, even putting new tires on a vehicle, but most will change their windshield wipers only after they fail them when they're needed.

That's because it's easy to ignore them -- until you hit a puddle, or a light rain and turn them on -- only to discover that they're about as useful as a New York City Squeegee Man. Without the whiskey breath.

That happened to me recently when driving Mom's car. I hit the wipers and made a mess.

Senate Bill 1419 in its current form would likely compromise power and access to traditional pick up trucks and light vans

The United States Senate is expected to begin discussions this week on S. 1419 which calls for radical increases in CAFE standards for pick-up trucks and light vans. Honda discontinues Accord Hybrid for low sales

Honda said Monday that the Accord hybrid would be discontinued after the 2007 model year, the victim of a high sticker price and unremarkable gas mileage.

"The reason it didn't sell is because the price premium wasn't justified by the gas mileage," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with automotive website Edmunds.com.

Honda sold a measly 439 Accord hybrids in the United States last month. By contrast, Toyota Motor Corp. sold 24,009 of its less-expensive, segment-leading Priuses. And sales of hybrid vehicles as a segment more than doubled this year, while the overall market for new vehicles is flat.

Avis Puts Chauffeurs In The Driver's Seat

Avis is announcing a new service that enables customers to book a chauffeur when renting an automobile in 10 big cities, including New York and Los Angeles. The cost in addition to rental charges: $30 per hour with a three-hour minimum. Rental experts expect other car-rental companies to follow suit.

The service--which requires 24-hour advance notice--is primarily targeted to mid- and high-level executives. Customers using the service are billed separately by Avis for the rental car and by WeDriveU, a company based in San Mateo, Calif.

The service may set off a firestorm in the taxi, limousine and car-for-hire industries. "Local licensing restrictions in many jurisdictions would preclude Avis from doing this," says Hal Morgan, of the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association. But Avis vice president Michael Caron says his company is "not in the livery business," so local laws regulating cars for hire do not apply to its Chauffeur Drive service.

Honda Takes Milwaukee

Starting from the inside of the second row, Kanaan ran in the lead pack for most of the afternoon, but Team Penske’s Castroneves appeared to be in control of the race as it entered its final stages. But the failure of a rear wing mount on Lap 201 sent Castroneves into the wall and out of the race. GM's Marketing Chief Calls for Beter Chevy Ads

General Motors Corp. marketing chief Mark LaNeve is sending a blunt message to Chevrolet's long-standing ad agency, Campbell-Ewald: Fix Chevy's car ads.

In an interview with Automotive News, Mr. LaNeve said he wants to push Chevrolet cars as a "smart choice" offering a better price than its Asian rivals -- and comparable quality, too.

Communicating brand benefits
"You're paying a premium" with Japanese cars, Mr. LaNeve said. "You're not getting better quality, you're not getting better performance, you're not getting better fuel economy -- you're just paying a premium. We have got to get that communicated."

Mr. LaNeve said he has asked Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper and Campbell-Ewald to improve the Chevrolet car ads. His comments appear to be raising the pressure on Mr. Peper -- and Bill Ludwig, the agency's chief creative officer.
