Ford's cute little Ka coming to a theater near you
The all-new Ford Ka microcar, which Ford Motor Co. sells in Europe and is considering bringing to America, will appear in the new James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace."
In the movie, which opens in the United States on Nov. 7, the Ka is featured in a unique metallic gold paint with a funky combination of exterior graphics and interior trim.
The special "Quantum of Solace" Ka was created by Ford of Europe's design team, in collaboration with the movie's Oscar award-winning production designer, Dennis Gassner. The Ka's cameo continues Ford of Europe's relationship with the James Bond films, following the debut appearance of the latest Ford Mondeo, in the 2006 blockbuster, "Casino Royale."

Zenn and the art of small, electric vehicles
Will smaller electric cars with limited speed and range catch on?
It might sound surprising, but all-electric vehicles are already on American roads. They just haven't quite made it to the highway yet.
A growing cottage industry of Neighborhood Electric Vehicle manufacturers is spurring the development of cars like the Zenn, which has reached a state of vehicular enlightenment so advanced it doesn't even need a tail pipe.
"We saw this car in May of '06, and all of us were just freaking out: 'Finally, a car!'" said Steve Mayeda, sales manager at Seattle-based MC Electric Vehicles, which sells 30 percent of Zenn's U.S. inventory, in addition to electric vehicles made by Columbia, Canadian EV, E-Ride and Miles. "Zenn was the first neighborhood electric car that actually looked and felt and drove like a real car. Everything else before that was either a converted golf cart or a car that was built from the ground up."

Subaru Outback Gets Rave Long-Term Review
Editor's note: One of our readers just wrote in to give us a long-term review on his 2006 Subaru Outback that now has 27,000 miles on the odometer, and we thought this real world feedback would be on interest:
It was two years ago that we traveled out of town to buy a shower curtain and came home with a 2006 Subaru Outback Limited. Our experience with this fine automobile has been outstanding.
There have been no issues of any kind. We just drive and continue to enjoy the engineering built into it.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!
Aren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?
I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.
Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]
In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.
Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:
1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.
2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.
And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Honda to recall over 45,000 hybrid Civics
Honda is recalling 45,335 Civic Hybrid sedans worldwide to repair a voltage converter defect that could stop the car’s engine, a company spokeswoman has said.
Japan’s No. 2 automaker plans to recall 7,219 of the vehicles sold in Japan and another 38,116 sold overseas, mostly in the U.S.
The defect — which could cause a short circuit that would stop the engine and prevent it from restarting, has caused no accidents. The affected vehicles were manufactured between September 2005 and September 2006.

E-Class marathon cars become cult faves

"E-Class Experience" cars are highly sought-after: I'm not going without my E-Class
Stuttgart, Jan 12, 2007 -- "Drive an E-Class once and you'll want to drive it forever": this certainly seems to reflect the mindset of the participants in the E Class marathon who have decided to purchase the very vehicles which they drove from Paris to Beijing.
Before they could embark on their second career as private cars or show vehicles exhibited by sponsorship partners and Mercedes-Benz subsidiaries in various countries, these reliable business saloons once again had to travel tens of thousands of kilometres. But, in contrast to the demanding outward journey, this time they were travelling as well-protected cargo.
The fleet of E-Class Experience cars had covered almost 14,000 kilometres by the time it reached the Chinese capital some six weeks ago. But the vehicles were still a very long way from their ultimate destination: before they could be handed over to their new owners, they had to make a "pit stop" at the DaimlerChrysler plant in Sindelfingen where each E-Class would be cleared by customs and given a thorough technical checkover.

2006 Was the Best Year Ever for Lamborghini
DETROIT – With more than 2000 models sold in 2006, Lamborghini rang in the new year celebrating its best year ever. The Italian automaker gave details of its success at a brief press conference today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show.
Worldwide sales were up 30 percent in 2006 —2,087 units over 2005’s 1,600 units. Of those 2,087 units, 876 of them were sold in the United States, up 37 percent over 2005 U.S. sales.
Growth was strong in Europe, where 746 units sold in 2006 represented a 50 percent increase. With 151 cars delivered, Great Britain saw growth of 81 percent.
The growth is attributed to a stronger dealer network – there were 65 dealers in 2005 and 100 by the end of 2006 – and a growing product lineup.
Lamborghini sells the Gallardo Spyder and the Murcielago LP640 Coupe. Murcielago LP640 Roadster sales are expected to begin in the spring.

Price Hikes During the Model Year Have Become a Thing of the Past
Competitive pressures are nearly eliminating new-vehicle price increases during a model year, according to real-time retail transaction data from the Power Information Network (PIN), a division of J.D. Power and Associates. To better reflect consumer demand for new vehicles, PIN data includes retail transactions only and does not include fleet sales.
During the 2006 model year, actual new-vehicle retail transaction prices for 44 of 50 high-volume models have declined. This pricing includes powertrain and body type, normalized for all months. The prices for the remaining six models have increased slightly since the beginning of the year. Four of the six models exhibiting price increases had an actual retail transaction price increase of less than 2 percent.

Top Ten Fuel Efficient SUVs for 2006

Regardless of whether your mode of transportation is a Schwinn, a Hummer H1, or a pair of worn-out Nikes, fuel-prices are hitting your wallet just like the rest of us.
When gas prices rise, everything else gets more expensive, and when cars start selling like hotcakes in rapidly expanding markets like China and India, demand usually dictates more pain at the pump.
This is especially painful for drivers who need a spacious and roomy vehicle such as SUVs, a ride that is typically unkind in its unquenchable thirst for petrol. Indeed, there are times when a Toyota Prius or a bus pass won’t do, so we’ve compiled a list of ten fuel-efficient, 2006 SUVs that are currently available, all boasting respectable EPA-rated fuel economy figures and more utility than a Little Red Wagon.

New Car Price Cuts On the Way
The Wall Street Journal reports that GM, Ford and Chrysler may be moving away from high manufacturer incentives and rebates and looking towards value pricing and production cuts in order to get more in line with actual transaction prices and spur sales amid turbulent times.
Chrysler, for example, has lowered prices on all its Pacifica models, now down an average of $1,300, despite added safety and performance features. Meanwhile, the dollar amount paid by the consumer from 2006 to 2007 models remains relatively unchanged. Rising competition is leading to subsequent price cuts on international nameplate models such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Toyota.
VW said this week that it is pursuing a new pricing strategy that offers lower sticker prices while maintaining a high level of standard features; Toyota has cut prices on the 2007 Highlander Hybrid an average of 5.9 percent from 2006 model year prices. And the base Hyundai GLS Santa Fe model for 2007 starts at $21,595, down $700 from the 2006 model despite an additional third row of seating.

Jaguar XK Coupe wins UK TV 2006 car of the year award
Jaguar's XK Coupe has been named 'Car of the Year' and 'Luxury Car of the Year' at the UK TV People Awards 2006. Over 10,000 UK TV viewers voted from a choice of 16 vehicles and chose the new XK as their favourite car overall.
Throughout the week preceding the awards ceremony, viewers watched Formula 1’s Louise Goodman test drive the 16 vehicles on the UK TV channel where she highlighted the various attributes of each car. The vehicles were then divided into four categories for viewers to make their selection. The categories were Sport, Family, Luxury and 4x4.
Jaguar’s UK Managing Director Geoff Cousins, said of the award: "We are delighted that the XK came out top of the bunch in what was an extremely strong and competitive short list. This recognition is especially pleasing as it was voted for by the public. I am also delighted for everyone responsible for the car's production here in the UK; they should all feel very proud that Jaguar came out top."
Loris Vigiani, Production Manager for UK TV said: "The competition was tough but the performance, shape and sheer beauty of the Jaguar XK Coupe obviously won the hearts and minds of the viewing public, beating Volvo, Mercedes and Maserati to win the ‘Luxury’ category; as well as Lotus, BMW and Porsche amongst others to win overall."
Fifth Gear’s Vicki Butler-Henderson and Adrian Simpson hosted the live awards. Viewers were invited to make their choice by text message on their mobile phone or via the UKTV website.
Since the Jaguar XK went on sale in March this year, Jaguar has taken more than 9,000 orders and delivered 5,000 vehicles worldwide. The XK has won eight awards in total since its launch, including 'Car of the Year' at the Auto Express Awards 2006. Prices start at £59,995 for the XK Coupe and £65,995 for the Convertible.

Ford offering zero percent loans to clear inventory
Ford is offering zero-percent financing for up to 72 months on 2006 cars and trucks in a bid to clear out inventory before the arrival of 2007 vehicles.
The program starts today and will run through Sept. 5. The financing will be offered to financially sound customers as well as those who have "good but not great credit," Ford spokesman Jim Cain said.
On July 31, Ford scrapped its Drive on Us promotion, which offered zero-percent financing, $1,000 in free gas and cash rebates, to focus on regional incentives for 2006 models. Ford also lowered sticker prices on 2007 models in a bid to bring sales prices closer to actual transaction prices. To increase sales of its crucial F-series pickup trucks, which saw sales fall by 12.3% for the first seven months of this year, Ford cut sticker prices on the 2007 model by as much as $1,400.

GM's XM Satellite Radio Option Now $199
XM Satellite Radio is One of the Fastest Technology Rollouts in GM History
DETROIT - General Motors has lowered the option price of factory-installed XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR) by 39 percent to $199, from $325, beginning with most model-year 2007 vehicles. More than 90 percent of GM's model-year 2006 and 2007 U.S. retail vehicles offer factory-installed XM Satellite Radios as either an option or as standard equipment.
"The economies of scale and engineering efficiencies brought by the rapid pace of XM Radio installations across GM's product lineup allow us to pass along cost savings to our customers," said Mark LaNeve, vice president of GMNA Sales, Service and Marketing. "XM Radio has become a must-have feature for many customers and demand just continues to grow. Chevrolet alone has produced over two million XM-equipped vehicles."

J.D. Power Reports Lower Priced Cars Nearly as Good as Luxe
Lexus and Toyota Models Each Rank Highest in Four Segments; Honda Models Rank Highest in Three Segments
The gap in long-term quality between luxury and non-luxury brands has been cut in half during the past four years, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) released today.
The study, which measures problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old (2003 model-year) vehicles, finds that there is an ever-smaller gap in reported problems between luxury and higher-volume brands -- averaging 15 PP100, down from 31 PP100 in 2003. Quality improvements with non-luxury brands are seen primarily in two categories -- ride, handling, braking, and engine and transmission -- which both have a strong impact on customer satisfaction.
The presence of several non-luxury brands among the top-ranking brands in the industry further underscores the shrinking dependability gap between luxury and non-luxury brands. While Lexus is the top-ranking brand in vehicle dependability for a 12th consecutive year and luxury-make Cadillac ranks fourth, three of the top five-ranking brands in vehicle dependability are non-luxury makes. Mercury and Buick, respectively, follow Lexus in the brand rankings, and Toyota ranks fifth.

At Gold Coast Cadillac in Oakhurst, N.J., twin sisters Tara and Robin Luyber each brought home a new CTS. This special day for Tara and Robin was also a milestone in Cadillac history, as the CTS crossed the quarter-million threshold in total sales.
“The 250,000 th CTS sold marks an important moment for Cadillac,” said general manager Jim Taylor. “CTS sales increased in each of its first four years on the market, an unusual phenomenon in our industry. We’re very proud that consumers have reacted so positively to this car.”
Which of the Luyber sisters owns the car that is precisely the quarter-millionth CTS? Given that the cars were purchased in tandem at Gold Coast Cadillac, the top-selling CTS dealership, that race officially ends in a tie.
“CTS has built a strong record of success on many levels,” Taylor said. “It has exceeded our goals for sales volume, set new design trends, won championships in racing, and earned awards for quality and customer satisfaction.”
CTS sold more than 61,000 units in the U.S. in 2005, compared to roughly 38,000 units in 2002, an increase of 60% over that period. This sustained sales growth is counter to conventional industry logic that says a new car’s hottest sales occur shortly after launch.
CTS, with a standard 2.8-liter V6 engine, starts at $29,990 MSRP. A 255-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine starts at $32,690.

Toyota's Tundra Target of New Safety Probe
A federal review of faulty suspensions could lead to another recall of the pickup and another black mark on the automaker's reputation.
Toyota Motor Corp.'s Tundra pickup may be recalled for the second time in two years after complaints of suspension failures prompted U.S. auto safety officials to upgrade an investigation.
The inquiry covers 219,522 Tundras from 2003 and 2004, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday. The agency is continuing a review linked to last year's recall of 775,000 Tundras and other vehicles. It also began a probe of 2004 and 2005 Sienna minivans because lift gates may fail.

Volkswagen stressing child safety in vehicle design
WOLFSBURG, Germany - Vehicle safety is important for all vehicle occupants, particularly for children. For this reason, the development engineers at Volkswagen also concentrate on small passengers. Numerous safety features for children are integrated in current Volkswagen models as standard.
Even today, approximately 50 percent of fatal accidents involving child passengers are caused by inadequate protection or failure to use protective systems. For example child seats: European studies demonstrate that more than half of all child seats are fitted or used incorrectly. If the vehicle has integrated child seats, there is no need to fit and remove child seats – a task that is often awkward.
In the Passat, Volkswagen offers a completely new generation of integrated child seats for children aged between three and twelve years of age (weight classes II to III). The new seat is easy to operate and can be folded flush into the rear seat bench when not in use.

Hey ma! There's a Ford Fusion in my Froot Loops!
We all did it at least once in our lives. We’re talking about begging Mom for a box of cereal with a special toy inside.
For Target shoppers, that coveted toy will most likely be one of three special-edition Hot Wheels Ford Fusions. And for one lucky person, the 1/64-scale Fusion can be traded in for the real thing.
Ford Motor Company has teamed with Hot Wheels and Kellogg’s to deliver more than 600,000 miniature Fusions in boxes of Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes and Cocoa Krispies. The specially marked packages, sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide, began appearing on shelves July 30.
The Hot Wheels Fusions feature one of three distinctive black, white or blue paint schemes. One box will include a one-of-a-kind red Target Fusion. The lucky individual who finds it will win a new full-size Ford Fusion.
The Fusion is already a hit. Sales of the sporty midsize sedan have grown an average of 15 percent month-over-month since January, based on preliminary Ford reports.
“This is a great opportunity to continue Fusion’s momentum, keeping it front and center on our target customers’ shopping lists — and breakfast tables,” says Robert Parker, Ford Car marketing manager.

Scion to launch "Scratcher" advertising campaign
Scion is launching an innovative advertising campaign that will begin this September. The campaign is called “Scratcher,” and it challenges the passerby to find two of the same customized-style cars in a lottery ticket style scratch off format. This being Scion, no two cars are alike. Building Wallscapes, Wild Postings and Max Rack Postcards and magazines will all be used as the campaign’s mediums.
For the Wallscapes, it will start with one car revealed and then every two days a new car will be revealed, to keep the regular commuters engaged. Additionally, Max Racks will have a postcard for each model, where the customer can actually ‘scratch-off’ all of the cars. The Wild Postings will allow passersby to scratch off as well, just on a larger format.

Detroit, Mich. - Saab, the car company that's "Born from Jets," is the primary sponsor of the 2006 Thunder Over Michigan Air Show to be held August 5-6 at the Willow Run Airport in Belleville, Michigan. The partnership gives Saab a major presence at the show, including participation by the "Born from Jets" promotional tour.
The travelling "Born from Jets" tour links Saab's aircraft heritage and jet-inspired designs with the excitement of air shows across the country. It features an eye-catching semi trailer that transforms into a small-scale hangar, complete with an attached control tower. When set up at an air show, this mobile hangar houses interactive displays of Saab product features and plasma screens showing Saab footage. A selection of Saab vehicles is on display in front of the exhibit.
The "Born from Jets" tour is a major element of Saab's marketing and advertising strategy that recalls the Swedish automaker's history as an aircraft manufacturer and the fact that Saab Automobile was started by 16 aircraft engineers. Saab's advertising slogan is, "Once you've built jets, you don't build just another car."

GM confident in their pickup game
White smiled with sly recognition after seeing Toyota Motor Corp. executives trumpet the painstaking research for the new Tundra full-size pickup.
At the Chicago Auto show last winter, while watching a Toyota video of "true truckers" driving through the most rugged and punishing conditions, such as oil fields and ranches, it quickly became apparent to White whose trucks Toyota studied.
"They were watching our trucks. Their trucks aren't out there," said White, who is in charge of GM's newly designed Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups that will be unveiled Wednesday.
It's GM's long history of building trucks and legions of loyal buyers that make White confident his pickups will match up against the Tundra and other competitors when they go on sale this fall.

Demand drives luxury car market to uber highs

The search is on for a new superlative. The growing stable of autos with base prices above $100,000 comprises cars so fast, lavishly equipped, and expensive that luxury simply doesn't cover it anymore. Enter the supers, ultras, übers, exotics, high-high-ends, and limited editions-by design.
It doesn't hurt that, according to a recent survey by Capgemini, the number of millionaires and billionaires grew last year to a record 8.3 million people worldwide, up an astounding 10%. That growth in high-net-worth individuals capable of dropping six figures on a car has been music to high-end manufacturers' ears.
Increased demand has been met by manufacturers large and small at varying price points. BMW revived the royal Rolls-Royce badge with the regal Phantom, which carries a sticker price above $300,000. Not to be outdone, DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz resurrected the stately Maybach at a similar price.

GM rolling out summer incentives
General Motors Corp. is rolling out a new incentive program today for select Chevrolet, Pontiac, GMC, Buick, Saab and Saturn models as the 2006 model year winds down.
Automakers typically add incentives in summer to clear space before next year's models arrive in the fall.
The program runs through Sept. 5 and offers discounts and 0% financing on certain 2006 vehicles, according to a news release.
In addition:
• 2006 Saturns are eligible for 10% off the sum of the suggested retail price and destination charge.
• The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche, and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are eligible for $2,000 trade-in assistance and $1,000 dealer cash. Financing rates range from 3.9% for 36 months to 6.9% for 72 months.
GM is to begin advertising the incentives today. In the statement, the automaker reiterated that it's not reviving the Employee Discount for Everyone discounts, which sent sales soaring last year.
GM's sales through June are down 12.3% compared with the same period of 2005.

VW Showcases Touareg on New Diesel at Pike's Peak

PIKES PEAK, Colo. – Mark Miller, driving a 2006 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI, conquered the treacherous 12.4-mile course at the 84th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Miller finished the Race to the Clouds in 14 minutes 8 seconds, followed by teammates Ryan Arciero and Danny Sullivan.
The three Touareg V10 TDIs were the first vehicles to use ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) in the Race to the Clouds. This clean diesel fuel reduces emissions of sulfur compounds and allows for the use of advanced emission control systems.
The Touareg also is the first light duty vehicle in the U.S. to include a particulate filter that further reduces emissions. The 2006 Touareg’s diesel engine is compliant in all 50 states and consumes up to 30 percent less fuel than traditional gasoline engines.
“The Touaregs, which were basically showroom stock vehicles, were faster than many of the purpose built race cars. For a vehicle with minimal modifications to cover all 12.4 miles, 156 turns at altitudes up to 14,000 feet in just over 14 minutes is remarkable,” said Miller. “The power of the twin-turbo V10 TDI diesel engine was really phenomenal.”
The Touareg V10 TDI is a high-performance, diesel version of Volkswagen’s popular luxury SUV. Its powerful five-liter, 10-cylinder engine boasts 310 horsepower at 3,750 revolutions per minute and offers impressive pulling power with 553 lbs-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.
“It was my first time competing at the legendary Pikes Peak race, and to team up with Volkswagen made it even more special,” said Arciero. “I really had no idea how competitive we could be in an essentially stock Touareg, but after the first practice runs it was clear that we were going to be quick. That each of us on the Volkswagen team finished in the 14 minute range is a true testament to the overall quality and performance of the vehicle.”
Modifications to the Touareg were made primarily to comply with the safety regulations imposed by the Pikes Peak Race Officials. A roll cage, fire extinguisher, special driver’s seat and a five-point racing seatbelt harness were fitted into the interior. Exterior graphics and a set of Nitto Terra Grappler tires were the only other additions to the vehicle.
“The combination of the powerful engine and the new ULSD fuel was a tremendous asset during this race,” Sullivan said. “Not only was the performance and handling great, but the Touareg was by far the most luxurious and quietest vehicle in the race.”
The 2006 Touareg V10 TDI will go on sale September 1 with a base price of $67,750.

Toyota, Honda Dominate Vehicle Research
Toyota and Honda vehicles makes up 12 of the 20 most researched vehicles Kelley Blue Book in the first half of 2006 according to the company.
Information was collected among more than 60 million unique visitors to kbb.com, who generated nearly 200 million pricing reports aiding them in their new-car buying process.
Once again, Honda and Toyota dominate Kelley Blue Book's most-researched vehicles list. Toyota captured seven spots in the Top 20 and Honda stole five slots, all of which landed in the Top 10. Only two domestic vehicles made the most-researched list; the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Mustang.
During the first half of the year, two vehicles fell from last year's list allowing two new vehicles to join. Both new vehicles make their debut in the Top 10; the Toyota RAV4 and the redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe. Falling off the list during the first half of the year are the Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
"What's interesting is that three entry-level luxury vehicles made the most-researched list for the first half of 2006; BMW 325, Acura TL and Infiniti G35," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and market analyst, Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "These three have definitely become brands and vehicles the public aspires to drive and own."
Minivans continue to prove their utilitarian purpose as two minivans maintained their places on the most-researched list; the Honda Odyssey coming in at No. 6 and Toyota Sienna at No. 15.

Ford Focus Gets a Drop Top -- in Europe Only

This cool looking ride will only be available in Europe - sort of looks like the Volvo C70 doesn't it?
* New four-seater Coupé-Cabriolet from Ford, on sale October
* Based on Vignale concept, first seen at the Paris Motor Show in 2004
* Stylish and elegant – designed in Italy
* Two-piece folding metal roof takes 29sec to open or close
* Best in class luggage space
* UK premiere at the British International Motor Show in July
* Manufactured in Italy by Pininfarina S.p.A.
BRENWOOD, Essex, 28 June, 2006 -- The new Ford Focus Coupé-Cabriolet combines open air motoring with the acclaimed comfort, stability and all-round practicality already associated with the top-selling Focus range. It goes on sale in October and will make its UK debut at the British International Motor Show in July.
Taking its place at the top of the Focus family tree alongside its sporty sister, the Focus ST, the new Coupé-Cabriolet uses a stylish and clever two-piece folding hardtop to give the car two distinct “personalities”. The roof function is neat, efficient and reliable: opening or closing takes just 29 seconds.
It’s also big on practicality - with the roof closed, the Coupé-Cabriolet offers a best-in-class 534 litres luggage capacity, and with the hardtop stowed, there is still 248 litres of luggage space. No direct class competitor can offer more space.
Elegant Italian Design
Designed in partnership with Pininfarina S.p.A, the Focus Coupé-Cabriolet exudes elegance and style with the hardtop up and down.
Its distinctive rear is characterised by unique tail lights linked by a chrome strip bearing an embossed Focus logo to give the new model a premium feel. This is further enhanced by a unique front bumper shape and distinctive wheel arches.
Inside, the car’s dashboard layout follows the style of other Focus models, but with a new colour scheme developed to distinguish it as a flagship – a scheme designed to complement the car's striking exterior. Two different colour schemes are offered: dark, sporty Ebony/Flint, and the warm, elegant Iris/Camel.
Engine Line-up
Together with style and practicality comes choice: the new Focus Coupe-Cabriolet has the option of two petrol and one diesel engine. The versatile 100PS 1.6-litre petrol unit provides 0-62mph acceleration in 13.6sec and a top speed of 114mph. Target combined fuel consumption is 39.8mpg.
The lively 145PS 2.0-litre petrol engine produces a 0-62mph time of 10.3sec and a top speed of 130mph. Target combined fuel consumption is 37.6mpg. And the super-economical 136PS 2.0-litre TDCi diesel powertrain gives 0-62mph in 10.3sec, a top speed of 128mph and targeted combined fuel consumption of 47.9mpg.
A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 136PS 2.0-ltre TDCi, while the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol units are offered with five-speed manual.
Strong and Safe
No matter which engine is chosen, the new Coupe-Cabriolet retains the Focus brand's inspired and involving driving dynamics. This has been achieved by basing the Coupe Cabriolet on the inherently rigid four-door Focus saloon underbody and front body structure and ensuring that most new body parts are made from high-strength steel.
Safety is paramount and Ford’s new Rollover Protection Device (RPD) plays a vital role in increasing the Coupé-Cabriolet's passive safety performance. In addition to standard front and side airbags, the RPD is designed to help protect passengers in the event of a vehicle rollover. If the system detects an imminent roll, two safety roll-bars "fire" and extend out by up by 20cm to provide a supportive safety strut along with the ultra-strong windscreen pillars to protect the car's occupants.

Designed in parallel with the naturally aspirated 2007 XK Coupe and Convertible, the new supercharged XKR makes intelligent use of practical, modern technology such as its industry-leading aluminum monocoque body structure. In fact, the new XKRs' aluminum chassis are significantly lighter and stiffer in both Coupe and Convertible form than the steel counterparts they replace.
A 420bhp, 4.2-liter supercharged V8 engine makes the Jaguar XKR capable of rapid 0-60 mph performance in just 4.9 seconds (XKR Coupe) and produces an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Dodge to Announce Challenger Production!

Chrysler is expected to announce production plans today for the new Dodge Challenger coupe styled and named after the automaker's 1970s muscle car, The Wall Street Journal said.
The V8-powered Challenger won't be sold until next year, but Chrysler will promote the car this summer to try to pull customers into showrooms, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the company's plans.
Chrysler's announcement of the new Challenger tomorrow at a Nascar race in Daytona Beach, Florida, was moved forward by several months in hopes it will create some buzz for the automaker, the newspaper's sources said.

Pontiac Solstice GXP Pricing

New Turbocharged Roadster to Sell for Under $26K
Pontiac has announced that the turbocharged 2007 Solstice GXP will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $25,995, including a $600 destination charge. The 260-horsepower roadster arrives in Pontiac dealerships this fall.
Powered by GM's new direct injection, turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine, the Solstice GXP adds a 47 percent boost of power to augment the road-gripping performance and seductive styling already available in the base model roadster.
"The passion customers have for the Solstice continues to amaze us and we have been sold out of the 2006 models for the past couple of months," said Mark-Hans Richer, Pontiac marketing director. "There's already a waiting list for the 2007 models, so we believe the GXP will only extend the Solstice's position as the top-selling roadster in the U.S., proving that a domestic car can retake a segment previously dominated by imports."
Model year to date through May, Pontiac has sold 15,145 Solstices, outselling the closest competitor in the segment by more than 2,600 units. Solstice remains one of the industry's hottest selling cars, contributing to a 20 percent increase in Pontiac showroom traffic since the beginning of the year and double digit percent sales gains in key coastal markets.

Mazda5, the Test Drive

The Mazda5 is such an awesome vehicle, in both conception and execution, that it should win multiple awards.
The only problem we see is -- what category would it qualify for?
That's because the Mazda5 is a true one-of-a-kind crossover vehicle. It combines the driving characteristics of a hatchback, with the dual sliding doors and three rows of seating of a minivan, with the stylishness of a small SUV.
We took to referring to it, when people asked "what that car was," as a mini minivan, because the dual sliding doors are such a dominant feature. Equipped with a 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder that produces 157 horsepower, we took the Mazda5 on a grueling journey up and down the "hills" of West Virginia, fully loaded with cargo, and the "car" performed admirably, never leaving us feeling like we were crawling uphill or in danger of losing maneuverability.
That leg of the journey was with the second and third rows of seats folded flat, and the Mazda5 hauled as much as just about any SUV we've driven.
One of the many cool features of the Mazda5 is the way the second row seats slide forward to allow access to the third row, which you might not think would be convenient given the vehicle's relatively smaller than full-size minivan architecture.
Because the vehicle is sort of a plus-sized hatchback [that hyrid category again] it gets GREAT gas mileage, it's rated 21 mpg in the city and 26 highway, but we averaged 29 mile sper gallon on a long haul, with about 25% city miles in the mix.
And driving it is a pleasure because even though it has all that functionality, there is also a rear hatch, throughout all the running around it felt like driving either a large hatchback or small wagon.
We think the Mazda5 is well-suited for urban types who want the function of a minivan without the stigma or the footprint, for sporty and outdoorsy types who want to haul gear and comrades, for young marrieds with their first kid or even retirees with an active lifestyle that includes grandkiddies.
The Mazda5 comes in two trim levels, the Sport starting at $17,995, that comes with 17-inch wheels, seating for six and standard Side-impact air bags and side air curtains. The Touring model includes all those features, starting at $19,510 and adds automatic climate control, a 6-speaker audio system with 6-disc CD changer, power sliding glass sunroof and fog lights, side sills and rear spoiler.

GM Leads Quality Survey Index Among New Owners
General Motors' vehicles captured five awards from new owners assessing the quality of their vehicles, according to a new survey published by Strategic Visions. The Chevy HHR won its small multi-function category, the Saturn Vue won small SUV, the Chevy Silverado won heavy duty pickup and the Corvette won two separate categories.
Toyota came in second with four wins, BMW and Honda three each; Chrysler Group had two. BMW repeated as the top scoring brand, the seventh time in eight years, and Volkswagen reemerged as the best full-line. Ford’s only win was significant, as its much-heralded Fusion took top honors in the medium car category.

Smart Cars Are Already Being Sold in the United States, Stealthily
This article talks about Zap, the Cali company that is importing Smart cars in dribs and drabs while the rest of the country waits to see if Mercedes is actually going to bring them here or not.
On that count, my vote is to open no more than 50 Smart car dealerships in the U.S., and only in major cities, in the same way that movies are "platformed" in choice locations to build buzz. Let's face it, the Smart car is no MINI and if Mercedes tries to mass market them they will fail miserably, period.
The problem I have with this SF Chron article on the topic is that it tries to make the oh so tired observation that celebrities driving Smart cars will make them cool. The same celebrities that drive Priuses and fly in chartered jets.

Chevy Impala, Toyota Avalon Top Side Crash Test Results
ARLINGTON, VA — The redesigned Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Avalon, both equipped with standard side airbags, earn top ratings of good in side crash tests that simulate an impact from an SUV or pickup truck. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently conducted side tests of eight large family cars. The Buick Lucerne and Hyundai Azera, also equipped with standard side airbags, earn the second highest rating of acceptable.
The Buick LaCrosse with standard side airbags is rated marginal, and so is the Chrysler 300 equipped with optional side airbags. The 300, Ford Five Hundred, and Ford Crown Victoria, all tested without their optional side airbags, are rated poor for side impact protection. (Note: The Ford Five Hundred with optional side airbags was tested last year and earned a good rating. With optional side airbags, the Five Hundred and its twin Mercury Montego earn the Institute's TOP SAFETY PICK 2006 (gold) award for good ratings in front, side, and rear tests.) According to Ford, the Five Hundred and Montego will be equipped with standard side airbags beginning with cars built in September 2006.

Subaru Outback Gets Rave Endorsement from New Owner

Editor's note: we got a very cool note from a CBN reader about his new Subaru Outback and thought we'd share it with the rest of you:
I purchased an Outback 2.5i Limited one month ago. Fuji Heavy Industries produces a fantastic automobile. I have driven an American brand soley for over 45 years and made this switch based upon both my reaction and my wife's. She was never excited about any other car I purchased but this one got her excited.
The quality of fit and finish and comfort and driveability and appearance and everything else enamored her (and me). The single colored champagne gold didn't hurt either.
It is no wonder the big three were all down in sales last month and most imports (even those made here which is a lot) were on the increase. Subaru is on the very same plane as Toyota, Honda, etc. Our town is full of them and I haven't found one person who doesn't love them.
One owner said if I don't get at least 150-200,000 miles he would be very surprised. The little four cylinder boxer engine with 16 valves and dual exhausts is amazing and gets great mileage.

Pontiac Solstice Wins First Stock Car Race

Andrew Aquilante won the Showroom Stock B (SSB) race behind the wheel of a souped-up Pontiac Solstice at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn. on June 10.
Debuting in SSB for 2006, the Solstice was race-prepared by Phoenix Performance.
“Lime Rock rewards nimbleness, agility and braking over outright power,” said John Heinricy of GM Performance Division. “With strong early performances, the Pontiac Solstice is demonstrating it will be a tough competitor in SSB for years to come.”
In its first two outings on May 6 at New Hampshire and May 28 at Nelson Ledges, the Solstice finished third and fourth respectively, while also setting the fastest lap time in each race. At Nelson Ledges, the Solstice’s fastest lap (1:18:811) set a new track record for SSB class.
Aquilante currently leads the driver points standings in the Northeast Division of SSB, and will next race the team’s Solstice in the Steel Cities Region June National at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, Penn. on Father’s Day, June 18.
While Aquilante was lighting up the track at Lime Rock, a second Pontiac Solstice entry was making its debut in the Kaw Valley Race Group June National at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.
Driven by retired GM executive Stan Czacki and built in the Phoenix Performance shops, the second-ever SCCA Solstice entry finished third on Sunday behind two BMW Z4s.
Both Solstices are equipped with the Z0K Club Sport regular production order option package, which is designed for the weekend racer and currently available to order through any Pontiac dealership.
Developed by GM Performance Division, the Club Sport package features the standard five-speed manual transmission along with antilock brakes (ABS), a limited-slip differential, an improved power steering cooler and FE3 suspension. The FE3 suspension will be standard on the upcoming 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP.
No other options are available when ordering the Club Sport Solstice, but some components and safety equipment are required by SCCA to make it track ready, including a hardtop, racing tires, higher friction brake pads, rollcage, seatbelts, etc.
Aquilante is the 2004 Northeast Division Rookie of the Year and 2005 Philadelphia Region Driver of the Year. He is also the two-time defending Northeast Division Touring 1 (T1) champion for 2004 and 2005 driving a Corvette C5 Z06.

Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit Take Subcompact Segment by Storm

Not only did Toyota Yaris sell a whopping 8,065 units in May 2006, the Chevy Aveo was displaced from its former #1 spot in the subcompact segment to #3 by the Yaris and the surging Kia Spectra, which turned in an impressive 8,474 units sold for a 65.5% monthly increase.
The Honda Fit sold 5,248 vehicles, coming in 4th in the segment, which with the introduction of the 2 new vehicles, plus the incessantly crazy gas prices, grew b y 66.8% over teh same month last year.
For the year to date, the subcompact segment is up 20.9%, a number that is bound to rise as the year progresses. Besides gas prices, you can't discount the amount of money Toyota and Honda are spending on marketing their new offerings.

2007 Honda Fit Gets "5-Star" Safety Rating from NHTSA

The 2007 Honda Fit has earned a "5-Star" safety rating for frontal crash performance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A "5-Star" rating is the highest government safety rating.
Already a leader in vehicle safety as demonstrated by Honda's "Safety for Everyone" initiative, Honda continues to implement leading airbag technology in all vehicles regardless of size or price. Dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, dual front side airbags and side-curtain airbags are standard equipment on all Fit models. In addition to its six airbags, Fit incorporates 3-point seat belts at all seating positions, as well as two Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) positions in the rear seats. Fit also utilizes active safety systems that include an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake distribution (EBD).
Honda's commitment to safety extends to pedestrians as well. To help reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, the Fit's hood and fender areas are designed to help absorb energy if contacted by an adult pedestrian.
Honda will complete the first phase of its "Safety for Everyone" initiative this year by voluntarily putting extensive levels of standard safety equipment on all its vehicles, with the exception of two small volume models (S2000 and Insight).
Additionally, Honda is the first and only auto manufacturer to list the NHTSA crash test "star" ratings on all new vehicle window stickers. This is the same information available to consumers on the NHTSA safercar.gov Web site.

J.D.Power: Hyundai Is The Highest Ranked Non-Premium Nameplate
Hyundai Tucson Earns Highest Initial Quality Ranking in its Segment
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. -- J.D. Power and Associates has announced that Hyundai is the highest ranked non-premium nameplate in the 2006 Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) and is ranked third among all nameplates. Hyundai owners had fewer problems with their vehicles than any other non-premium car or truck brand.
In addition to Hyundai’s strong overall showing, the Hyundai Tucson earned the trophy for the highest initial quality in the compact multi-activity vehicle (MAV) segment.
Hyundai ranks among the top three nameplates in the study for the first time in the history of IQS, according to the the 2006 Initial Quality Study issued by J.D. Power and Associates. Highlights include a top ranking for the Hyundai Tucson in the compact MAV segment, and top three segment performances for the redesigned Sonata and all-new Azera, as well as the Elantra and Tiburon.
The IQS study measures 217 attributes, including the overall driving experience, engine and transmission, and a broad range of defect and design problems reported by vehicle owners. Hyundai has been steadily improving its non-premium nameplate ranking, ranking third in 2005, up from fourth the previous year.
“Outperforming incredibly outstanding competitors at their own game for the first time in the same year is a major milestone for Hyundai,” said Owen Koh, Hyundai's President and CEO. “This ranking demonstrates what tremendous strides we’ve made in quality, especially with an almost entirely new model lineup. Also very impressive is how well Sonata scored right out of the gate from our new assembly plant and workforce in Alabama.”
The Hyundai Sonata ranked third in the highly competitive midsize car segment.
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA), which produces the Sonata and Hyundai Santa Fe, finished tenth in plant quality out of 73 plants in North/South America. HMMA’s North American plant introduction is among the best in the industry in the last decade.

Honda Announces Tax Credits for Hybrids
Buyers are eligible for federal tax credits ranging from $1,300 for Accord Hybrid to $2,100 for Civic Hybrid
Customers who purchase a new 2006 Honda hybrid vehicle on or after January 1, 2006, may be eligible for federal tax credits ranging from $1,300 to $2,100 when they file their 2006 tax returns.
The announcement is the result of a ruling by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which calculated the tax credits based on the Energy Policy Act of 2005, passed by Congress last year. Honda's 2006 Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid and Insight with automatic transmission are eligible for the tax credits.
The federal tax credits are as follows:
Model Federal Tax Credit
2006 Civic Hybrid: $ 2,100
2006 Accord Hybrid: $ 1,300*
2006 Insight - automatic transmission: $1,450
*2006 Honda Accord Hybrids without updated control calibration qualify for a credit amount of $650.
Various limitations to the credit may apply, depending on the specific circumstances of the customer, and Honda is encouraging customers to contact the IRS or a tax advisor to determine if and how the tax credit will apply to their vehicle acquisition. Customers are also encouraged to contact the IRS at www.irs.gov for information on hybrid tax credit amounts applicable to Honda's 2005 model year hybrids purchased during 2006.
"These federal tax incentives reward consumers who make environmentally responsible purchasing decisions," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. "Honda continues to be a leader in producing vehicles that set the standard for fuel economy and low emissions."

IRVINE, Calif. - The 2006 Kia Rio/Rio5 ranked highest for initial quality in the sub-compact category in a tie according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality Study SM (IQS). The annual report, released today, measures 217 vehicle attributes across eight categories, including the driving experience, engine and transmission, and a broad range of quality problem symptoms reported by vehicle owners.
“ Rio is a class-leading subcompact vehicle and an excellent example of Kia’s continued dedication to offering consumers an affordable vehicle without sacrificing quality,” said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of Kia Motors America. “We're extremely pleased that the automotive industry and consumers alike recognize Rio’s high level of excellence.”
In the study, the Kia Rio was honored as the highest-ranking model in a tie in the sub-compact segment at 137 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). The all-new 2006 Rio sedan and Rio5 five-door are raising the bar in the entry level segment by offering class-leading horsepower and interior volume, and six standard airbags, including full-length side-curtain airbags. The Rio and Rio5’s longer wheelbase and increased width and height contribute to a best-in-class 92.2 cubic feet of passenger room and both body styles feature a long list of standard equipment.

Ford VP Explains Ethanol & Flex-Fuel Issues
Despite all the attention ethanol is receiving in the media these days, there are still a lot of questions in drivers' minds about what the fuel is, how it works, where they can find it and why they should care.
Sue Cischke, Ford's Vice President Environmental and Safety Engineering, recently sat down to provide some answers to those FFV and ethanol questions.
Q: What is a Flexible Fuel Vehicle?
A: Flexible Fuel Vehicles are designed to run on gasoline, E85, or any combination of the two. They are “flexible” because they give the driver the option to choose between gasoline or E85 when fueling an FFV vehicle. E85 is fuel made up of 15% gasoline and 85% ethanol. The vehicle's on-board computer determines which fuel is being used and adjusts the engine for proper operation.
Q: How do I know if my vehicle is a flex fuel vehicle?
A: Vehicles with flex fuel capabilities are marked in the vehicle description and fuel economy information boxes on their new vehicle window sticker and there is an ethanol fuel label on the inside of the fuel filler door. Vehicle owners can have their dealer check the Vehicle Identification Number to determine if it is an FFV. Owners can also go to the E85fuel.com website and check under E85 compatible vehicles. The site has information on all of the manufacturers' FFV makes and models.
Q: Why would I want to use ethanol?
A: Because U.S. ethanol comes from corn produced in America's heartland and is renewable.
This is one step we can take to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. At the same time, ethanol fuel has some advantages over gasoline such as lower emissions of greenhouse gases and higher octane. Another advantage is that Ford does not pass the added cost of an ethanol-capable vehicle onto the customer.

Nissan Halts Sale of 2006 4-Cylinder Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs
Nissan has told its dealers to stop selling certain 2006 model year, four-cylinder Altimas and Nissan Sentra SE-Rs because of reports of excessive oil consumption while it continues to investigate potential causes.
The condition, if not detected or addressed properly, could lead to the potential for engine damage, or failure which could result in a fire in extreme cases. The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration has been advised of Nissan’s action.
Nissan estimates that about 100,000 Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built between January and May 2006 may be subject to excessive oil consumption. There have been about 215 reports of excessive oil consumption, mostly from rental-car fleets, and 17 reports of engine fires, resulting in one minor injury.

Lexus and Toyota Dominate J.D. Power Awards
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — The way in which technology is integrated into new-vehicle design, particularly interior features and controls, is considered by consumers to be as important to quality as are defects and malfunctions, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) released today. The study is in its 20th year.
The Initial Quality Study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership, has been completely redesigned for 2006 to capture problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories—quality of design and quality of production (defects and malfunctions).
“New vehicles today are often packed with new technologies that unfortunately can be complicated and frustrating for the average consumer when their integration is not well executed,” said Joe Ivers, executive director of quality and customer satisfaction research for J.D. Power and Associates. “In the eyes of consumers, design flaws can have as much of an impact on their perceptions of quality as can a defect. Yet, many manufacturers have tended to address quality solely on the plant floor without considering design factors.”

Kia Sedona and Subaru Impreza Earn Top Safety Picks
Crash tests of small cars & minivans: 2 earn the Institute's Top Safety Pick award; 1st Institute test results for Prius hybrid
ARLINGTON, VA — The Kia Sedona and Subaru Impreza are the best performers in a group of minivans and small cars recently evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Sedona is the first minivan to earn the Institute's Top Safety Pick award, and the Impreza is only the second small car design to earn this award. Both vehicles earn gold awards for good crashworthiness ratings.
The Institute also evaluated the Toyota Prius hybrid's front, side, and rear crashworthiness plus the side crashworthiness of three other vehicle designs — the Mini Cooper (small car) and Dodge Grand Caravan and Chevrolet Uplander (minivans). Results for these vehicles update the results for minivan and small car models that were released last year. Side tests of the Grand Caravan, Uplander, Mini Cooper, and Impreza were delayed at the request of the vehicle manufacturers, who were making changes to improve crashworthiness.
Sedona is top-rated minivan: Among the eight current minivan designs the Institute has rated, the Sedona is the only one that earns good ratings in all three Institute tests (this vehicle also will be sold as the 2007 Hyundai Entourage later this spring). The new Sedona's frontal crash test performance is an improvement compared with the previous model, which the Institute rated acceptable.

New Vehicles Spend Less Time on Dealership Lots
Power Information Network Reports: Despite Higher Transaction Prices, New Vehicles Spend Less Time On Dealership Lots
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. —For the first time in three years, the average days to turn (the number of days a vehicle sits on a dealership lot) for the new-vehicle retail market has consistently been less than 60 days, even as new-vehicle transaction prices rise, according to real-time retail transaction data from the Power Information Network (PIN), a division of J.D. Power and Associates. To better reflect consumer activity related to new-vehicle sales, PIN data includes retail transactions only and does not include fleet.
While days to turn varies from one vehicle manufacturer to another, the average days to turn for the industry has been less than 60 days in each of the past eight months, from September 2005 through April 2006. The previous time period this occurred was from June 2002 through January 2003. Although new vehicles are spending less time on the lot, transaction prices (vehicle price less customer cash rebates) have increased when compared to the same month a year ago for 23 consecutive months since June of 2004.

Toyota Prius Worldwide Sales Top 500,000 Mark
Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that the Toyota Prius, the world's first mass-produced gas-electric hybrid vehicle, has surpassed one-half million worldwide cumulative sales with 504,700 units sold as of the end of April.
Toyota launched the Prius in late 1997 in Japan. Its popularity in Japan encouraged the launch of Prius in the U.S. in July 2000. The first-generation U.S. Prius was a low-volume unit (12,000 produced annually) that gained an immediate following, particularly among environmentally conscious consumers. The second-generation U.S. model was launched in the fall of 2003 as a 2004 model year.

2006 Chevy Police Tahoe

Introduced during the 2005 model year, the Chevrolet Police Tahoe greatly extended the reach and flexibility of law enforcement agencies, by allowing them to go places and do things that are difficult to do with a typical sedan.
The two-wheel drive Police Tahoe is designed for high speed and severe duty law enforcement use, making Police Tahoe an ideal alternate selection for day-to-day patrol, K9 Unit use, SWAT, and various other applications where rear-wheel drive and versatility are a high priority,” said Bruce Wiley, General Motors manager of law enforcement and specialty vehicles.
Police Tahoe delivers plenty of performance – 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm from the standard 5.3L V-8. The 5300 Vortec can operate on fuel that contains up to 85 percent ethanol. In addition, E85 reduces our nation’s reliance on fossil fuels and it’s a clean, renewable resource that benefits our farmers, since it’s derived from corn
The powertrain is revised to accelerate more quickly and the fuel cut-off limit is increased to 125 mph. It’s mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

Forbes.com has named the Hyundai Azera 'Best Luxurious Car for a Nonluxury Price' in the 2006 "Best Cars for the Bucks" list. Land Rover Navigation Does a Herculean Job

Have you seen the Land Rover LR3 commercial where they claim it helped guide a plane from Nice to Corsica? To understand fully what they're implying, you may want to view the documentary at this page.
Essentially, a pilot sat in the driver's seat of the LR3 and spoke to the guys in the cockpit of a Hercules aircraft, using data from the SUV's nav system to get the aircraft to its destination. The LR3 beat the advice we heard one pilot give to another once, "when you see the first ocean, make a left."
Anyway, we're big fans of nav systems here at the Notebook, since we don't always pay attention to where we're going and from personal experience the Land Rover's is cherry.

Ford Turns to Workers to Sell Cars
While Ford has always given current and former employees discount coupons for family and friends to buy vehicles, they are now aggressively courting the option, turning to their 350,000 company members to help sell vehicles.
Ford President Mark Fields said that if each current or retired worker helped sell one vehicle that would add an additional 2% of market share to the company's fortunes.
Participants will get a tiered set of incentives and prizes for putting cars over the curb; Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo vehicles are eligible.

Mercedes Lends Fuel Cell Vehicle to Student Drivers

Mercedes has been lending their F-Cell hydrogen vehicle to select folks taking their driving exam in California, and we're curious if the wow factor gives them an edge with the inspectors.
Fuel Cells are whisper quiet, and fun to drive, though we also wonder if the extra torque ever jumps out of the newbie's hands.
And we also wonder just what the insurance on the vehicle's, which are worth about a million bucks each, runs to!
Full press release after the jump.

Small Pickups Carry a Lot of Weight

Even though overall sales of small pickups has dropped, the rise to prominence of the Toyota Tacoma could spell trouble for the Ford F-150. That's because J.D. Power has found that small pickup owners choose a larger truck for their next vehicle, 28.1% of the time, more than any other category.
With Toyota launching the new full-size Tundra later this year, that could explain why they put so much effort into redesigning the Tacoma last year -- with lots of loyal customers they may stay in brand and go for the Tundra.

Jeep Bringing Diesel Grand Cherokee in 2007

Jeep will outfit the 2007 Grand Cherokee with a 3-liter diesel engine, becoming the first automaker to market a full--size SUV. Jeep already markets the Liberty with a 2-liter Common Rail Diesel [CRD] engine and has sold over 11,000 units since sales began.
The 3.0 CRD produces 215 horsepower, which might sound anemic to hp-happy American consumers, but as diesel produces greater torque than gas engines the pickup and get off the line-ability of the CRD Grand Cherokee will impress anyone who drives it.
The CRD Grand Cherokee will get an an estimated fuel economy of 19 miles city and 23 miles highway. The current V6 gas engine gets 17/21 mpg.

GM HydroGen3 Fuel Cell Vehicle

First of all, anyone who think fuel cell vehicles don't drive regular speed has never tried to run one down on the highway.
That's what I did last week when I saw this GM HydroGen3 vehicle cruising down George Washington Parkway, and the driver was kind enough to pull over and let me take some pictures.
The irony was that the batteries in my camera were dead, so I borrowed a camera from the driver's mother! Talk about going the extra mile for the GM team.
The batteries, or more properly, fuel cells, in the HydroGen3, will only die after 249 miles, when liquid hydrogen is used, and 168 miles when compressed fuil is used. As part of the GM hydrogen project, they have partnered with Shell that has installed a fueling station in Washington, D.C.
This particular model is based on the Opel Zafira, essentially a small minivan, and besides this tester, GM is also running a vehicle through the post office, that is delivering mail in the region.

Chevy Aveo Street Review

A guy was sitting in a parked 2005 Chevy Aveo outside my building this morning and I asked him how he liked it.
"Love it," he said.
Lindsay was his name, and he told me he bought the four-door for $7,500, after getting the price quote online. He was most surprised that the dealer didn't fiddle with the price, and he said the car has exceeded his expectations. Good gas mileage [24/34] off the 103 horsepower engine, good pickup and generally an all-round solid car.
When I asked him if he'd buy another one he said yes, then told me he was buying one for his daughter.
What more do you want?

Yak! Automotive Ad Analysis
Advertising Age has a couple articles about car advertising that are funb to read, mainly because they make fun of the frenetic pace at which companies adopt, discard and relabel their brands. I spend a lot of time with the TV on while I'm working and with the volume of car ads screaming their non sequiter slogans at me, I often resort to muting the commercials.
Jean Halliday had the good fortune to have an ad guy refer to his tribe as "like ADD ferrets on amphetamines," in her article.
Al Ries, the self-marketed marketing guru, offers a collection of meaningless messages in his article:
"Let engine cool before kissing." Chrysler.
"Insects call it the widowmaker." Mazda.
"You've practically lost your license just looking at it." Mitsubishi.
"Is it OK to say 'balls' in an ad?" Cadillac.
"The kind of acceleration that makes nice people say bad words." Lexus.

2006 VW GTI -- The Car We Love to Test Drive

In the automotive game, there are some cars we like to drive, there are some cars we have to drive.
And then there are cars we yearn to drive.
When I knew the Volkswagen Golf GTI was coming to my driveway I was pumped. When it pulled into the lot I hopped, skipped and jumped into the driver's seat.

To give you an idea how hot this car is, how much we absolutely love it, I'm going to break one of my cardinal rules – the GTI is one of three cars I have driven in the last two years that I would buy. Along with the Range Rover Sport and the Audi A6 4.2, the GTI is a car I would love to own – and at a starting price of only $21,990, this car is the most affordable awesome vehicle on American car lots today.
And it's not just me. The guys at the coffee shop know what I do for a living, and usually ask what I'm driving. Sometimes they saunter out to the curb to check out the wheels.
With the GTI, they opened the passenger door and got in. I have a standing offer to about 20 people that I'll take them for rides in the test cars, and the GTI has garnered the most people who've taken me up on the offer.
The response was unanimous. This is a great car! Everyone was impressed by the GTI's get up and go, especially from a standing stop when I took the car from first to third gear and up to 60 miles an hour in short order. The sound of the 2.0 Turbo engine [standard on the GTI Golf] is throaty and assured, and is kind of a disconnect with the hatchback's exterior, which might lead you to believe this is a boring little buggy. To the contrary, it's a hotrod, something the legions of hardcore VW enthusiasts know well.

The Volvo C70 Convertible Is in Dealerships And On the Road

Volvo's brand new hardtop convertible, the C70, is now in dealerships, sort of. We say that because every Volvo point is selling every C70 they get delivered, and it shouldn't be long before Volvo sells out their annual allotment of 8,000 units for the North American market.
We've already seen a couple on the road here in Northern Virginia, but since it's not easy [or safe!] to be taking pictures of cars when the traffic light is changing, we paid a visit to one of Don Beyer's Volvo stores to get a closeup look at the new C70. What can I say, driving the Mustang was contagious. And even the C70 we test drove was already sold!
The Volvo C70's convertible hardtop is a three-piece affair [four if you count the trunk] and the operation is powered by an electric motor controlled by an in-cabin switch. Volvo has the distinction of bringing the most affordable hardtop converible to market in the luxury segment, with the car starting at $38,710. The silver model pictured on the lot was priced at $45,770 after adding metallic paint [$475], bi-xenon headlights with washers [$700], automatic transmission with geartronic [$1,250], a premium seating package [$1,395], audio package [$1,500] and 18-inch alloy wheels[$995].
To continue with the obvious, the hardtop roof's operation is smooth and more than a little bit of fun to sit there and watch it either envelope or unveil you to the sky. Besides the obvious pleasure of driving with the roof down, when it's up it is just like driving a hardtop sedan. The Volvo turbocharged 5-cylinder engine produces a quick 218 horsepower and cornering was tight.
And it wouldn't be a Volvo without an impressive safety innovation. The C70 features an inflatable curtain, or IC, that has an extra stiff construction with double rows of slats that are slightly offset from each other. According to Volvo, "this allows them to remain upright and offer effective head protection even with the window open. The curtain also deflates slowly to provide protection should the car roll over. This is a unique solution in the automotive world."
The Volvo C70 has above the norm seating for a convertible that will accommodate four adults. The two rear seats can be accessed with a push of a button on the front seat's backrest, which moves the front seats quickly forward.
We also love the conter console that is a thin, aluminum-faced ribbon that is separated from the rest of the front dash furniture. This design feature is an elegant solution to the usual bulkhead that faces you in the front section of a car and creates a sense of airiness in the cabin.
As we stated previously, Volvo will only send about 8,000 units to the States, so if you're interested in buying a C70, you better act fast or the only view you'll get of it is the one pictured above.

Ad Age Writer Slammed for Critique on Dodge Fairy Ad
When I read this Ad Age commentary complaining about the use of an animated fairy in the new Dodge Caliber ads, I meant to write a piece saying, that no, the fairy has nothing to do with gays and is not offensive.
While I still am of the opnion that the author, Bob Garfield, is simply wrong in his assertion that the Dodge fairy is a veiled affront to gay men, you have got to go to the article to read the comments!
As of this writing, 2 days after Garfield's piece was posted, 63 people have commented, nearly unanimously condemning Garfield for being 100% wrong.
Keep in mind that many of these commenters work in advertising and marketing, a gay-friendly field, and several write in as self-identified gays who find no problem with the ad. Yes, there are a few who agree with Garfield, but they are the minority. I'm glad sometimes for comments on websites, because in this case they police the writer for having an out of bounds opinion.

Kia Sedona Rated "Best Minivan We've Tested"

The folks at Kia are plenty happy today. Not only is their new Sedona minivan selling gangbusters, it is the first minivan to receive top safety ratings in front, side and rear crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety [IIHS].
Adrian Lund, IIHS president said the Sedona is the "best minivan we've tested," and singled out its rear crash test performance as praiseworthy. The Sedona is the only minivan with active head restraints and comes with standard side airbags, considered a must for side impact protection.
Subaru's Impreza also received a top safety pick from the Institute, for good performance in all three tests, while the Toyota Prius was singled out for poor rear crash protection.

What a Boner! Viagra Costs GM $17 Million Annually -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #167

We guarantee the jokes about this story are going to last longer than four hours, though no one will need to go to the emergency room.
Here's the setup: General Motors spends $17 million a year filling Viagra and other erectile dysfunction prescriptions, according to this article.
Possible punchlines include:
-- That's $17 million of Detroit Steel, baby.
-- Once again, GM screws themselves.
-- It's getting expensive for GM to keep its head above water.
-- How much of that goes to ED [Engineering Division]?
-- Automaker's Health Costs Swelling Beyond Control.
-- Executive Dysfunction.
-- At least they'll die with a smile on their faces.

Understanding the Halo Effect

Al Ries, the self-marketed marketing guru, has a good column in today's Ad Age about the Halo Effect, or the impact a premier product has on a company's overall performance.
He discusses how the iPod and Razr products have been used by Apple and Motorola as the image definers of their companies, and how they are each spending the bulk of their advertising dollars on items that don 't account for the majority of their sales.
In both cases, the success of each has helped Apple and Motorola gain sales in their overall lines, as well as the halo items.
You're seeing it right now with Toyota and hybrids, Saturn is pushing the Sky, and Ford uses the Mustang for a lot of advertising -- you'll also start seeing a lot more about the Volvo c70 hardtop convertible. So even though some products don 't seem like they make sense in the bigger picture in terms of sales vs. advertising allocation, they do because they lift the overall brand.

The Chevy HHR is a Looker

In one day I saw a half dozen brand new Chevy HHRs cruising the streets.
Personally, I like this car and think the overall shape is more graceful and will have more longevity than the design they stole for it -- the PT Cruiser.

The Anti-Hybrid Revolution Has Begun
We've yet to see a freeway shooting promulgated by hybrid-hating road rage, but this LA Times article says people are pissed off about hybrids using the HOV lanes.
The biggest beef is that the eco-smartypants are driving slower in order to maximize their gas mileage.
The other problem is that, since California has the highest number of hybrids sold, they are clogging the diamond lanes, according to the bashers.
But the real problem is that people, and governments, bought the hybrid hype in the first place.
Folks, hybrids are an innovation, not a revolution. They get a little bit better gas mileage, but they're still burning fuel to propel automobiles.

KBB's Coolest Cars Under $18,000

Kelley Blue Book has rated their Top Ten Coolest Cars under $18,000 -- and since Chevy was the first company to put out a press release, they win the coveted photo choice. The Chevy HHR, pictured above, lists for $16,390. Curious the PT Cruiser doesn't make the list, but we always forget where we came from.
Toyota had three vehicles on the list -- the Yaris subcompact, the Scion xB wagon and the Scion tC Coupe. Full list and KBB's thumbnail descriptions after the jump.

Unintended Consequences Dept. -- Tahoe Ads Chevy Doesn't Want You to See

We've already written about the website where you can make you own 30-second video commerical for the new Chevy Tahoe, courtesy of a tie-in with The Apprentice TV show
Well, of course, we made an obscene version of a TV ad, but we didn't actually publish it on the Chevy site. However, at least two people did:
-- One is called Howard Kaloogian's Big Adventure and if you know the backstory, it's hilarious. Howie the K is running for crybaby Randy Cunningham's Congress seat, and recently got busted by the Internent Truth Squad for a photo he put on his campaign website. The photo was passed off as a Baghdad corner, as a means to show how those big, mean liberal journalists only want to tell bad stories about Bush's Exploratory Invasion. Unfortunately, the picture was from Turkey, as in the country.
-- This one is from another leftie, but you don't need a backstory to laugh along with the bouncing flourocarbons.

Spotlight on the 2006 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE and Frontier 4x4 NISMO

While Nissan has firmly established itself as one of the “Big Six” American automakers, having sold a million vehicles in the last calendar and fiscal year, it has also stood apart from the other high volume automakers with its relentlessly bold styling.
And Nissan’s aggressive approach is not only cosmetic – their pickup trucks and SUVs also stand out for their uncompromising grasp of horsepower and performance handling, versus other products that look tough but are often little more than jacked-up cars.
The company has recently proved its versatility yet again, with the introduction of the 2007 Nissan Versa, the new subcompact. The Versa may be small, but it packs the typical Nissan design punch with an easily identifiable nose and a sweeping rear section that prove a small car can still have an outsized personality.
Both the Versa 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan are equipped with a standard 122-horsepower 1.8-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine and a choice of three transmissions, including Nissan’s Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) that provides smooth shifting and enhanced fuel efficiency. And the Versa is expected to start around $12,000.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn also introduced the all-new 2007 Nissan Sentra at the Detroit Auto Show this January, which features an all-new, standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, standard 6-speed manual transmission or the Xtronic CVT transmission. The 2007 Sentra is scheduled to go on sale in fall 2006 and is expected to have a MSRP starting at around $15,000, equipped with power door locks and windows, side-impact curtain air bags and air conditioning.
Driving the 2006 Altima 3.5 SE
The Altima is a textbook example of Nissan going their own way while shifting expectations. The conventional wisdom in the midsize sedan category is that the car should include as many features as possible to meet the expectations of as many people as possible, and the design should also be pleasing but avoid having too much of a personality. For some reason conventional wisdom dictates that midsize sedans should be sedate.
The Altima, however, is a midsize sedan for people who want a little excitement and style in their life as they’re prosecuting their daily responsibilities. It has a lot in common with the best-dressed, most interesting and lively person in that 9 to 5 office environment.

The Subaru Revolution Takes Hold in Texas

Under the wide Texas skies, there’s no room for bluffing on auto rows. Especially in Dallas, where Subaru dealer David Thomas said, "On Lemmon Avenue, you’ve got everything from Hummer that’s the anchor at one end, Audi’s the anchor at the other end to everything in-between including Honda, Subaru, Volkswagen, Aston-Martin, there’s that huge new Mercedes dealership -- there’s been a $100 million worth of construction in the last two and a half years."
That perspective makes Subaru of Dallas’ success more impressive. When you have a geographical situation where someone test driving another brand’s car can pull into your lot -- in the competition’s vehicle -- to do a real-time comparison, the dealership’s 90% conquest rate illustrates how Subaru is successfully expanding outside of their traditional markets.
In an effort to build on their success in Dallas, Subaru of America has entered into their first "antenna" store project with Thomas, a joint operation where Subaru corporate is funding the land and construction, with Thomas operating as dealer principal. The project is being physically built on Subaru’s new Signature Facility Program template and is intended to provide a direct link for retail floor data between the dealership and corporate executives.
Besides the obvious benefit of funding, Thomas said the project holds other benefits for the dealership, in that new training concepts and product information can be tried out in the Plano location for testing purposes. For the corporate end, Plano will provide "ready access to market information," and an opportunity for corporate visits and training, said Peter Cook, Director of Market Development, Subaru of America.
But why is Subaru doing so well in Dallas? It’s no secret that the brand is associated with colder climes, as Cook said, "it’s considered the state bird of Vermont."

Spotlight on Saab's 9-7X and 9-3 for 2006
With three new all-new products plus significant redesigns, Saab has entered the 2006 new vehicle market with designs on reinvigorating its presence in the United States by appealing to customers across a broad spectrum.
In terms of new products, Saab has introduced a 9-3 SportCombi, or wagon body, for their popular sedan, added their first-ever SUV with the 9-7X [available with the company’s first-ever V8] and also introduced a new V6 turbo engine for the high-end 9-3 models that produces 250 horsepower.
The 9-5 series went under the designer’s table for a significant refresh that included exterior reworking in a new hood, front and rear lamps, front fender, tailgate and trunk lid. On the inside, the 9-5 also received a new instrument panel appearance, interior door handle, steering wheel and door panel trim. Both the 9-5 sedan and SportCombi are equipped with a 260 horsepower turbo engine.
Driving the 2006 Saab 9-7X
Automotive experts and Saab buffs breathed a sigh of relief when they saw the 9-7X in the metal. There were some concerns that the brand would sacrifice its distinct heritage by building their first SUV on a GM platform, but what happened is that Saab’s engineers took the best-in-class experience from GM’s truck-based TrailBlazer, and gave it a thorough reworking -- many auto journalists consider it the best version of GM’s SUV to date.
Saab actually lowered the chassis, stiffened the front end, and went to great lengths to tighten the steering and drive characteristics, all in an effort to make it more Saab-like -- and to render an almost sedan-like driving experience in a midsize SUV.
The interior is similar to that of a Volvo or BMW SUV, in that it just seems like a supersized version of what brand lovers are familiar with. Saab engineers took great pains to rewire the ignition into the familiar between the seat console position, and there are plenty of Saab styling cues throughout the vehicle.
Just like its sedans, the 9-7X delivers northern European refinement in a package that belongs to its own class -- Saab drivers have long taken pride in their break away from the pack choice of not driving what everyone else has, and they often do it with a feeling of great satisfaction. We know one owner that’s turned it into a verb, "Saabing it," she calls it, and the 9-7X SUV continues that tradiion.

Audi's Q7 Expected to Move 70,000 Units in 2006

Audi's new Q7 has proved to be a big hit with consumers, generating 16,000 orders by early March and prompting the company to increase production, according to Reuters.
At least 50,000 and up to 70,000 units of the SUV will be sold this year, according to Audi. The Q7 comes in either a 4.2 liter 8-cylinder version that produces 350 horsepower, or a V6 that gets 280 hp. However, the Audi website only lists the 8-cylinder model as being available, starting at $49,900.

GM Extends Sweepstakes on Women Buyer's Site

Maybe we should have known about the General Motor's site for women, but hey, you can forgive us since we're not women.
GM.com/women offers vehicle shopping, safety and buying information specifically for women, and since last year's sweepstakes was so successful they're doing it again.
By registering you get to play an instant game, and, if you don't get a little prize through the eDecoder, you're still entered to win a grand prize of either $10,000 toward a new GM vehicle, or a spa getaway.
And just because we didn't know about the site, and aren't women, that doesn't mean we didn't enter the contest -- we enter all the contests from the automakers. Just to see that the websites are operational for our readers of course.

Here is the website. The intro slide show is cool; above is a small version of available wallpaper of one of JD's designs.
To be quite honest, I don't understand what's going on here, or why it's a big deal, but I've walked out of several avant-garde venues shaking my head.

Mercedes Camper Van: Like the Vanagon, But Not

One of the drawbacks of the Internet is that we get to see the cool stuff other people have, but which we can't get our hands on.
Take this Mercedes camper van, for example. The "Marco Polo" has been built since 1996 but I've never seen one at a campground. And wouldn't expect to see someone in Grateful Dead drawstring pants getting out to find water to rinse the sprout bag, either.
Mercedes says it's their best-selling camper van to date, and the new models include the option to get a TDI diesel engine and 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Hyundai Sonata and Tucson Win 5-Star Crash Test Rating

Both the 2006 Hyundai Sonata and Tucson have received the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) top five-star crash test rating for front and side impacts.
The Tucson was the first vehicle under $20,000 with standard Electronic Stability Control and six airbags while Sonata is the only mid-size sedan with standard Electronic Stability Control and six airbags. Both have received numerous accolades, including Tucson's "Best Value Car Award Winner" from SmartMoney magazine, and Sonata's "Automotive Excellence in Safety Award" from Popular Mechanics.
The Sonata features six airbags-including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags-along with active front-seat head restraints. Other passive safety features include shingle-style rear seat head restraints for improved visibility, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, front-seat seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters, and a rear-seat LATCH system for child seats. Hyundai devoted 300 new Sonatas to internal crash testing to make sure the Sonata attained NHTSA's five star rating in both front and side collisions.
The Tucson is engineered to provide its passengers with multiple defensive layers. The steel unibody has designed-in crumple zones and a high-tensile front sub-frame that are designed to work together to reduce the forces that reach the passenger compartment. To help resist intrusion, four structural rings encircle the body. All four doors also have internal guard beams to protect passengers in a side-impact collision.
The Tucson's passenger restraint systems help minimize injury. Three-point belts are provided at all five seating positions, and the front seatbelts have pretensioners and load limiters. There are two outboard rear LATCH child-seat anchors.
A total of six airbags are positioned in the Tucson's interior. Dual advanced frontal airbags are complemented by front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags that cover both the front and rear rows of seating.

Audi Diesel Racer Triumphs at Sebring

The new Audi R10 TDI has become the first diesel powered car ever to win the 12-hour race at Sebring. Audi has dominated the Le Mans circuit for years with the previous incarnation of the vehicle, but they've recently stunned the motoring world by going with a diesel engine that produces 650-horsepower from its V12 configuration.
The R10 won the race despite having to withdraw one of the two vehicle entries due to a malfunctioing telemetry system. The three driver team of Dindo Capello (Italy), Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Allan McNish (Scotland) won the race for Audi. Tom Kristensen became the first driver to win America’s most famous endurance race for a fourth time, achieving another record after his record seventh Le Mans victory from last year.

Remember the story about the Long Island Expressway wreck where a completely crushed Audi saved the driver's life? Well it turns out the driver, Bryan Pacelli, actually works as an Audi sales manager.

When Pacelli is back on his feet he's going to be selling him some Audis.

Ford Sport Trac, Explorer Earn 5-Star Crash Test Ratings

The all-new 2007 Ford Sport Trac, along with the Ford Explorer, has earned the government's highest five star crash test ratings for frontal and side impacts for drivers and passengers.
“We're pleased that NHTSA has recognized the new Sport Trac with its highest possible crash test ratings,” said Sue Cischke, vice president, Environmental and Safety Engineering. “In addition to more refinement and increased capability, the all-new model offers a new package of advanced safety features.”
With 10 advanced safety innovations as standard equipment, the Sport Trac offers the most active and passive safety features in its class. Four of these are new adaptive technologies specifically designed for Ford’s stringent internal safety targets.
“The 2007 Sport Trac offers the same impressive suite of safety features as the 2006 Explorer,” says Cischke. “It offers active safety technology – including confidence-inspiring handling and braking combined with AdvanceTrac with industry-exclusive Roll Stability Control – to help prevent accidents. In the case of an accident, the new Sport Trac offers enhanced rollover side-impact protection, and four new adaptive safety technologies that help tailor frontal-impact protection based on crash severity, occupant size and safety belt usage.”
To help prevent accidents, the new Sport Trac features Ford Motor Company’s AdvanceTrac with class-exclusive Roll Stability Control as standard equipment. Roll Stability Control features roll-rate sensing, offering assistance to the driver in maintaining vehicle control during extreme maneuvers. The system automatically engages countermeasures to help the driver maintain maximum control and further reduce the risk of rollover.
In the case of a frontal collision, Ford's occupant classification system helps tailor air-bag deployment for increased protection. A horizontal stroking adaptive steering column and Tire Pressure Monitoring System add to the safety package to further help protect customers.
In the event of a side impact, the 2007 Sport Trac features standard side-impact air bags for the driver and front passenger and available Safety Canopy side air curtains that deploy in certain side-impact collisions or if an impending rollover is detected.
The 2007 Sport Trac carries over the 2005 starting price of $24,940, despite the increased standard safety equipment, increased refinement, and increased capability.

Saab's Take Flight Event

Saab is running a "Take Flight" event through April 4, 2006 that has two distinct components. First, you have to go into the dealer to learn about specific deals on in-stock vehicles.
Second, you could win a new 2006 Saab 9-5 sedan, but there's some fine print involved. In order to get your official game number, you have to have received, or eventualy get, a mailer with the digits affixed. Since there's only two weeks to go, if you're a sweepstakes junkie, I say you may be able to get one if you sign up for information at the Saab site, maybe.

Ask the Salesman: How Can I Buy a Car With Bad Credit?
If you have questionable credit or you know you have what some would consider bad credit, you are not necessarily forced to go to a "Buy Here Pay Here" type of dealership.
When I say dealership I am referring to those that do not advertise "Bankruptcy, Repo, Divorce, No Problem!" Those are for the most part honest dealerships but as a rule the cars that are sold there are bought from auctions. They got to auction because they are what most dealerships did not want to sell for one reason or another.
If you are one of the people that thinks they have substandard credit, do not feel like you cannot buy a car from a reliable new car dealership. If you are not 100% sure of your credit situation, the first thing to do is to put your cards on the table when going in. Tell the salesman upfront and ask to have them run your credit. It might be a situation of what can they get you approved for or that you actually have better than average credit.
If you are in a situation where you actually are credit challenged, let the finance manager work for you to get you in that car. You need to have some options if you do not want to be taken advantage of.
Rest assured, those with bad credit are the easiest to do that to. Ask them what you can get approved for. You may have your heart set on a silver V6 Accord but, the dealership may have a blue 4 cylinder Accord with some rebates that can be used as money down or the dealership may be willing to take a loss on a car to get it out of inventory. You also may be do better with a 1 or 2 year old used vehicle.
Most banks go by NADA retail value when deciding what dollar amount to loan on a car purchase. The dealership may have a 1 year old car that they have very little money in and with a high NADA value. If it is the end of the month they may be very motivated to make a deal on it. You need to keep your options open. You never know, a lending institution may be buying more deals this month and will let questionable things slide on a credit report.
Most importantly of all, take your time. Rome was not built overnight and if you have bad credit, you will not get approved in 15 minutes.

Roadside Assistance Programs on Foreign Cars
It’s the kind of feature that comes equipped with most new International vehicles that owners never want to use – and ironically, one the vast majority of consumers don’t even know comes standard with their purchase.
Just like an umbrella, roadside assistance is something you don’t need until the situation calls for it – and then you find you really need it. And life can be pretty miserable without it.
Luckily, many International nameplate brands provide some level of free roadside assistance during the initial warranty period of the vehicle, with some offering it as an upgrade to the basic plan.
Once the exclusive province of fee-for-membership clubs such as AAA, roadside assistance programs usually provide services such as free towing in case of a breakdown, flat tire changing and even a few gallons of gas in case you tried to push the needle past empty a little too far.
The specifics of each automakers programs differ; current owners should check their owner’s manual for details, prospective buyers can find information at the respective brands’ websites.
What follows is a thumbnail description of roadside assistance programs from several international nameplate manufacturers.

Current Incentives on Foreign Cars, Trucks and SUVs
Depending on a number of variables -- including time of year, prime rate and available inventory, all automakers provide a mix of cash rebates and financing programs to the consumer through their dealers. And while in many cases big signs announcing cash off are enticing, the reality is that low financing can actually make a new vehicle purchase more affordable in the long run than that splashy number.
Right now, international nameplate dealers are offering a variety of programs, sometimes cash, sometimes finance, and sometimes a mix of both, to consumers interested in getting into one of their vehicles. The following list is a summary of nationally available programs, though offers do vary from region to region, with financing deals especially dependent on the consumer’s credit history. As always, your best option is to visit your local International nameplate dealership to find out what they’re offering on the vehicle you’re most interested in.

SUV Sales Up 5.7% in February 2006

Contrary to reports from just about every other news organization, SUV sales were up in February 2006, by 5.7% over the same month last year.
The most startling thing everyone else got wrong is that large SUVs were up by 13.3%.
The other important trend to note is the increasing percentage of sales that crossovers and sport wagons claim of overall SUV sales. At 46.6% of total SUVs, crossovers are indeed changing the face of the SUV market, as people generally move away from traditional body-on-frame designs and embrace car-like models.

Top Ten Best Selling Cars For February 2006

February saw the usual top four vehicles in their usual positions -- Camry, Accord, Corolla, Civic -- and even with a whopping 37.6% sales increase the Civic couldn't unseat the Corolla.
It looks like the Hyundai Sonata may have found a permanent spot in the top 10 -- after landing there several times, the new, built-in America Sonata is once again sitting on the top of the pile at #9.
And look at the Chevy Cobalt -- the biggest gainer at 87.4%, Chevy has a hit on their hands, thank you very much.
Also making the top 10 this month is the Chrysler 300, which has now adopted an on-again, off-again flirtation with being one of the top 10 best selling cars in America.

Ask the Salesman: What is the Proper Way to Test Drive a New Vehicle?
When you are starting your search for a new car, there are a few basics that you will have to go through. One is the test drive. There is actually a right and a wrong way to test drive a car.
You should always drive the same type car you are considering. If you want to consider an Accord V6 with leather, drive an Accord V6 with leather.
If the dealership is out of stock and the salesperson wants you to drive a cloth one instead "just to get the feel" only do it if you might also consider a cloth interior. Make sure you drive the one with leather as well. The reasons is that leather will feel different and on a lot of cars, you will also get a different type of steering wheel as well.
When you actually go on the test drive, make sure the salesperson goes with you. Do not go on a test drive if they do not go with you. Everyone has gotten into a rental car at night and not known how to turn on the dome light. Same thing applies here. Having someone who knows something about the car and can tell you about the car while you are driving is valuable. Let them push the buttons and turn on the radio for you so you can concentrate on driving and getting a feel for it.

What is the Limit of Two Front Tires? A Look at the Front Wheel Drive Horsepower Wars

There is a relatively interesting trend that is going to come to a head over the next year: Horsepower wars of the front wheel drive compacts.
The idea of dropping a more productive engine into what is otherwise a light-n-cheap car is not new. The original mustang proved this to be a winning formula that has bred a fan-supported line for 40+ years.
There were also a few flops that a big engine just couldn't fix ... if the AMC Pacer is any example. The idea of beefing up a new generation of teenymobiles that happened to be front wheel drive started in the '80s with such lovable runabouts as the Civic CRX, Volkswagon Rabbit, and Corolla FX-16.
But those cars were pushing their relatively low-displacement engines to the likes of 120 HP... what seemed to be a perfect balance given their light weight. The new generations of cars have started to push big numbers... lets look at some of the factory numbers for cars you could buy today:

OnStar Gets Druggie Arrested
This has got to be a minor headache for the GM PR people -- an Onstar operator contacted police when s/he couldn't hear Ralph Gomez in his Cadillac Escalade, so the operator called police as part of the safety system's protocol. Gomez was showing off the system to his girlfriend at the time.
When police arrived, they spied cocaine that was "clearly visible" on the center console, according to the Associated Press. The cops arrested Gomez, took his drugs, his money and his Escalade.
This episode will probably not wind up in one of those OnStar commercials. Never mind the stereotype about the Escalade.

Mercedes had its best February on record with sales of 17,356 new vehicles, an increase of 28.4% over last February.
The new 2007 S-Class Mercedes flagship vehicle sold 3,360 units, a 226.8% increase over February 2005. The M-Class SUV continues to do well, selling 128.3% more over last year, 2,155 vs. 944 units.
Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned [CPO] program, MBUSA sold 3,459 vehicles in February, bringing annual sales for the year to a total of 6,525 units. Mercedes currently offers 2.9% financing on C, E and S Class CPO cars.

GM to Go Mad With March Incentives?
According to "leaked' documents obtained by The Detroit News, General Motors is planning another round of incentives, to run March 15 to April 4. The new plan is rumored to include MSRP discounts, plus cash bonuses, and perhaps also, dealer bonuses, if they accept more vehicles onto their lots.
I say "leaked" because in the auto world, as in other areas of journalism, some of these are leaks part of the plan. It sounds juicier doesn't it?
GM has already cut MSRP on many of their vehicles, so it will be interesting how deep the incentives can be.

GM's XM Satellite Radio Site

General Motors offers factory-installed XM radios on 50 of their new cars and trucks, and each of them comes with a three-month free trial, so you can experience the clear superiority of satellite over old-school radio. You can find out more about GM's offering at their dedicated XM site, link below.
If you've already bought a new GM vehicle, you can activate the receiver by going to this site. If you haven't yet gotten on the satellite bandwagon, there's also a link at the site to sign up for a free trial.
At Car Buyer's Notebook, we love satellite radio.

The Dieter Show Rolls into Geneva on the 2006 Mercedes Bike

Here we have Dieter Zetsche, CEO of DaimlerChrysler pulling one of his famous auto show stunts in Geneva, on the two wheels of the 2006 Mercedes Automatic Bike. Perhaps this is a foreboding of cost-cutting measures.
Perhaps not. The base price for the Mercedes bike starts at $2,000 and the fully-equipped version goes for $2,240, just like cars.
Still, I love these bikes. They're elegant, high-tech and just plain cool. And only on sale in Germany for now.
The automatic function of this bike involves an onboard computer that selects the appropriate gear for the rider, who can also use manual shifting if he or she prefers.

Saturn Ion: Would You Like it More if We Called it the S/Ion?

So, I'm liking the looks of this Saturn Ion "quad" coupe, and the price for the base model is only $13,490. That's with a 140-horsepower engine -- plus it has those cool mini-suicide quad doors behind the main, bigger doors [see pic below].
Now, if you're thinking somewhere in Scion tC territory, I'd take a look at the Saturn Ion, or S/Ion if we were trying too hard to be cool.
While the Scion tC does start at $16,840, that's with a 160-hp engine. You can beef up the Saturn Ion [S/Ion, aren't we cool?] to 170 hp with a performance package that will cost y
