Sales Predicted to Decline in 2006, 2007
Internationals to Have Record Year in California
According to Ward's Auto, 2006 should yield a 3.3 percent drop in automobile output in North America, a new 10-year low. The group also has a grim outlook on sales, expecting U.S. car and light truck sales to slip to 16.4 million units in 2007, from 16.5 million units this year and 16.9 million in 2005.
This may not be good news for Detroit automakers Ford, GM and Chrysler, who hope to make turnarounds in the North American operations over the next two years. Meanwhile, news coming from California this week bodes well for Asian automakers – the Golden State is likely to set a new sales record in 2006.
According to a forecast from the California Motor Car Dealers Association, Japanese companies are expected to wind up with sales of 938,839 units this year, while Detroit automakers will sell around 859,206 units.
