Affected Items: Windshield Wiper Motor and Brake Vacuum Line

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced safety recalls to address two issues in some 2006 and 2007 model year Passat sedans, and in some 2007 model year Passat wagons.

Some of the affected 2006 model year Passat vehicles have a wiper motor that may fail during heavy rain due to excessive moisture entering the wiper motor. If this happens, reduced visibility could result.

Also, some 2.0T engine-equipped 2006 and 2007 Passat sedans and some 2007 Passat wagons may have a power brake vacuum line that may fracture and become disconnected at low ambient temperatures. If this happens, the brake power assist can become inoperative, and the driver will experience increased effort to apply the brake and therefore possible increased vehicle stopping distance.

Iraq Veteran Completes ‘Ironman’ with Support from Ford Mobility Motoring

Kona Run FMM_thum.jpgWhen U.S. Army Maj. David Rozelle finished the Ford Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in October, he became the first war amputee to complete the grueling triathlon, which encompasses 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking and 26.2 miles of running.

Rozelle participated in the Hawaii Ironman thanks to co-sponsorship by Ford Motor Company’s Mobility Motoring program, which helps people with disabilities get adaptive equipment installed on Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicles.

“Maj. Rozelle is a courageous individual and an inspiration to people with disabilities who strive to live a normal, active life,” says Kathleen LaPointe, Ford Mobility Motoring manager.

Ford Mobility Motoring became Rozelle’s sponsor after the native Texan earned the Ford Everyday Hero award at the Ironman event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in June. There, the Iraq war veteran received a standing ovation.

“Earning the Everyday Hero award is definitely a highlight of my life,” Rozelle says. “And I’m very grateful for the support I received from Ford Mobility Motoring to compete in Hawaii.”

As he crossed the finish line at the Ironman in Hawaii, Rozelle saluted to honor and inspire other soldiers who have sustained debilitating injuries in combat. Rozelle lost his right foot to a land mine in Iraq in 2003 and later became the first amputee in modern military history to command in a war zone.

Volkswagen Riding on Anti Lock Brakes [ABS] for 20 years

Market launch 1986: the first Volkswagen with ABS was the Passat

The democratisation of safety: ABS fitted to 25 million Volkswagen vehicles

Trend-setting: ABS maintains steerability in emergency braking situations

WOLFSBURG, Germany - Volkswagen is celebrating the 20th anniversary of ABS, a trend-setting safety system. In 1986 the Volkswagen anti-lock brake system was implemented first in the Passat and then, later in the year, in the Golf.

Volkswagen thus once again democratised vehicle safety as the Golf and the Passat were two of the first affordable mass-market vehicles worldwide to be fitted with this safety system. The Volkswagen product was very nearly given a different name: in 1981 Volkswagen presented the research vehicle "Auto 2000" with numerous innovative safety features that looked ahead to the future. One of the features was the "automatic brake-lock prevention system", known at the time as the ABV.

Toyota voluntarily recalls 200,000 Highlander and Rav4 SUVs

Toyota Announces "Check Engine" Light Special Service Campaign On Certain Toyota Highlander and RAV4 Sport Utility Vehicles

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., will launch a voluntary Special Service Campaign involving approximately 60,700 four-cylinder Highlander sport utility vehicles from the 2001 through 2003 model year and 159,100 RAV4 sport utility vehicles from the 2001 and 2002 model year. This light does not affect the operation of the vehicle. The affected RAV4 and Highlander were produced from July 24, 2000 to August 22, 2003.

There have been 80 cases of this condition reported in the Highlander and RAV4. Toyota will mail to owners of the involved vehicles a Service Campaign notification via first class mail in mid-December.

Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer for reprogramming of the ECM with improved logic. Reprogramming will be done at no charge to the owners of the vehicle and will take approximately 30 minutes, depending on the dealer's work schedule. No parts replacement is necessary to complete the campaign.

Customers with questions or concerns should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Holiday Driving: Don't Let Road Rage Escalate

According to National Survey Half the Victims of Aggressive Drivers Become Victimizers Themselves

Fully one-half of drivers who are subjected to aggressive driving behavior on the road respond with aggression of their own, thus risking a more serious confrontation.

According to a recently released national survey by car insurer Response Insurance, when a driver gets the finger, is cut off or tailgated, 50% of the victims respond with horn honking, yelling, cutting-off, and obscene gestures of their own.

The "Response Insurance National Driving Habits Survey" revealed that 34% of drivers say they honk their horn at the aggressor, 27% yell, 19% give the finger back, 17% flash their headlights, and 7% mimic the initial aggressive driving behavior. 2% of drivers admit to trying to run the aggressor off the road.

"Road rage is a two-way street," noted Ray Palermo, director of public relations for Response Insurance. "It takes two people to fight. So, if you are subjected to aggressive driving, often the best way to ensure it does not get any worse is to just ignore it."

Resale Value and Dealership Service Cited as Key Contributors to Retention

Toyota leads the automotive industry in retaining the highest percentage of new-vehicle purchasers, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Customer Retention Study(SM) released today.

Now in its fourth year, the study measures the percentage of new-vehicle buyers and lessees who replace a previously purchased new vehicle with another from the same nameplate. Redesigned 2007 Chevy Police Tahoe: Built for cops from the ground up

chtahcop.jpg

The dramatically redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Police Tahoe delivers more power, enhanced ride and handling qualities, and more safety features than its 2006 counterpart. It also delivers a great deal of utility, cargo room, visibility and go-anywhere capability.

But those attributes are only part of the 2007 Police Tahoe story. What distinguishes this vehicle is the fact that it is the first SUV designed from its inception as a law enforcement vehicle. That designation delivers a great many benefits to law enforcement agencies.

“Like the 1999 Chevrolet Impala Police vehicle – the first car in automotive history to be designed from its inception as a law enforcement vehicle – the 2007 Police Tahoe includes a number of law enforcement-specific enhancements. These enhancements were achieved during the design phase, with the result being that the Police Tahoe is available to law enforcement agencies with a number of features that set it apart from retail Tahoes,” said Bruce Wiley, GM manager of law enforcement and specialty vehicles.

What sets this computer-generated film apart is that it is based exclusively on CAD data and was produced totally digitally on a computer. Thus the real R8 never once had to touch the road. At a ceremonial gathering in Frankfurt last Saturday, the Deutscher Designer Club e.V. (DDC) awarded gold to the R8 microsite in the digital category of its ‘Good Design’ competition.

musesmrt.jpg

shows the history of the brand – including the new smart fortwo

Not yet at dealerships and already a museum exhibit - those who would like to see the new smart fortwo before it is launched in April 2007 now have an opportunity to do so. From 06 December 2006 to 14 January 2007 the new smart fortwo will be part of the "smart story" exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart.

The new smart fortwo can do everything that the current model can do - but better. This means that the new smart fortwo is even more comfortable, even more agile, even safer and even more environmentally friendly than its predecessor.

10 Questions With Nissan's Larry Dominique

dominique.jpgLarry Dominique is Vice President for Product Planning and Strategy Department, Nissan North America, Inc.

1. The latest generation Nissan 350Z, introduced as a 2003 model, is still strong enough to be named Road & Track’s "best enthusiast car under $30,000." But value aside, the Z is giving away its star status in the lineup to the upcoming GT-R. What happens next with the Z and how do you keep it relevant to enthusiast buyers?

As a world-class supercar, the GT-R is the "icon" of the franchise – and its reputation and status will only grow stronger once the next generation hits the global market. But the Z is Nissan’s volume "icon" which helps maintain our brand strength to the mass market.

The current 350Z and 350Z Roadster continue to be well received by sports car buyers. The Z delivers upon the promise of great sports car performance at a "reasonable" price tag. The price of GT-R will keep it above the mass market, but Z is attainable by most. The next generation Z will continue to deliver upon that promise. It will have considerably more performance than the current model and give a visual stimulus beyond today’s Z. This value and performance proposition will be even better than today, continuing an almost 40-year tradition as Nissan’s brand icon.

WOLFSBURG / AUBURN HILLS - Volkswagen of America sold 8.6 percent more vehicles in the first eleven months of 2006 than during the same period in 2005. A total of 215,198 vehicles were delivered to customers on the US market from January to November this year.

Ford listening to customer needs

In today's competitive market, it's not enough for people to like a car. They have to love it.

"You can come up with vanilla, or you can come up with chocolate. We're going to come up with Rocky Road because our goal is to create cars and trucks that 'wow' our specific target customer," said Mary Lou Quesnell, Ford Motor Company's Brand DNA director. Strengthening the company's focus on consumers is an integral part of the Way Forward plan. Cali Hybrid Sales Slow

Sales of gas-electric hybrid vehicles have fallen sharply since August, a result of declining gasoline prices, shrinking federal tax credits for some brands and uncertainty over carpool-lane stickers in California, the leading hybrid market.

Despite the sales drop, prices for the two best-selling hybrids -- the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid -- have barely budged. But that could change if inventories continue to climb.

Carmakers sold 26,249 hybrids in August, the same month the average price of gasoline nationwide hit $3 per gallon.

Since then, gasoline prices have fallen 24 percent, to $2.28 per gallon, and hybrids sales have dropped 31 percent to 18,117 in November, according to Edmunds.com.

By contrast, total U.S. passenger vehicle sales fell 19.5 percent during the same period.

Hybrids accounted for only 1.52 percent of all vehicles sold in November. That's down from 1.77 percent in August, but up from 1.38 percent in November 2005, according to Edmunds.

The sharpest drop came between September and October, when the tax credit on Toyota and Lexus models fell by half. These two brands, both made by Toyota, account for more than three-fourths of all hybrid sales.

In a speech at an industry conference last week, Jim Press, president of Toyota North America, urged Congress to extend the federal tax credit for hybrid vehicles to encourage consumers to buy more fuel-efficient cars.

2007 Mercedes-Benz M-Class gets top rating in US safety test

ml350.jpg

The prestigious US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the Mercedes-Benz M-Class its Top Safety Pick 2007 – the best buy when it comes to safety. The off-roader from Stuttgart performed outstandingly in all areas in the luxury SUV category.

Every year, as a purchasing guide, the experts at IIHS rate new car models according to strict safety criteria. This year, for the first time, they included SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles). In the course of their assessment the second-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class was subjected to frontal and side-on crashes. The US safety specialists also assessed the level of protection offered against neck injuries in a rear-end shunt.

The Mercedes off-roader scored top marks in all three areas. For the first time, one of the criteria for classification as this year’s Top Safety Pick included the availability of an Electronic Stability Program, which can reduce the risk of skidding when cornering and keep the car on track in extreme conditions such as black ice or wet road surfaces. As a safety pioneer, Mercedes-Benz developed the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) in collaboration with Bosch and was the first car manufacturer to introduce it in its series-produced vehicles back in 1995. This system has featured as standard in all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars since 1999.

Designing cars that warn each other of impending danger

cars2x.jpg

DaimlerChrysler first in the world to effectuate the new technology

Stuttgart -- In future, motorists will be able to detect danger even if the danger spot lies around the next bend or over the horizon.

This has now been successfully verified by DaimlerChrysler experts and their partners in a field test conducted at the conclusion of the "WILLWARN" (Wireless Local Danger Warning) European research project.

During the course of this test, five vehicles equipped with WLAN-based radio technology used the "Car-2-X Communication" system to radio details of critical situations detected by their on-board sensors – fog, black ice or obstacles on the road such as broken-down vehicles – to following cars. These early warnings enabled the drivers of the cars behind to prepare for the danger and adapt their speed in plenty of time.

DaimlerChrysler had already tested this technology some six years ago – a world first at the time – by sending the first ever inter-communicating vehicle fleet out onto the road as part of the "FleetNet" research project.

Wall Street Wary of Ford Wager

According to a Detroit Free Press report, analysts on Wall Street are questioning whether the recent move by Ford's new CEO Alan Mulally to wager most of the automaker's assets to secure $18 billion in credit are sufficient even for survival, given the company's projection that it will burn $17 billion through 2009.

While experts acknowledge the wager was "critical" to ward off a threat of bankruptcy, they caution that "Ford doesn't have a lot of time to get its plan right, and it doesn't have much room for error, especially if the economy stumbles."

The revelation that Ford will burn through $17 billion of a total available $38 billion, has led to renewed cries from Wall Street that Ford's restructuring plans are not enough. Freep reports: "No automotive analysts surveyed by Bloomberg recommend buying Ford stock, despite its restructuring plans. Eight recommend holding the shares, and an equal number recommend selling them. City Safety: Volvo Cars presents a unique system for avoiding collisions at low speeds

4728_1.jpg

Volvo Cars unveils a unique system that can help the car driver avoid the sort of low-speed collisions that are so common in urban traffic and in slow-moving traffic queues. If the driver is about to drive into the vehicle in front and does not react in time, the car brakes itself.

The system is called City Safety and Volvo Cars' ambition with it is to help avoid half of all rear-end collisions.

Volvo Cars plans to introduce City Safety on the market within the coming two years. “The system offers benefits to all involved. For the occupants of the car in front, the risk of whiplash injuries is avoided or reduced. What is more, the system can help reduce or sometimes even eliminate the cost of repairs to both vehicles,” says Ingrid Skogsmo, director of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.
