“Stanley” the modified Volkswagen Touareg SUV that won a $2 million military challenge in October, will be featured on NOVA’s “The Great Robot Race,” airing on PBS March 28 at 8 p.m. ET.

Stanley competed against 200 other vehicles in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge, a 132-mile race over varied outdoor terrain intended to test the ability of driverless vehicles to traverse ground.

The NOVA program will provide an in-depth look at the DARPA Grand Challenge and the technological innovations of Stanley, and the other contenders.

A team from Stanford University, along with the Volkswagen Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL), transformed a stock, diesel-powered Touareg modified with full-body skid plates and a reinforced front bumper. It is operated by a drive-by-wire system developed by the ERL.
