San Francisco To Study “Congestion Charging”

congestion.jpgTaking note of the success London has had with “congestion charging,” the pay-to-drive policy, San Francisco will spend $1.3 million to see how it can be implemented in the city's financial district.

The London plan has cut traffic by 30% and generated about $350 million for the government, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, and is monitored by a system of 203 cameras. Drivers pay a fixed fee to enter the city's congestion zones certain hours of the week.

San Francisco's system could use a combination of the cameras and the state's FasTrak transponder system, that would automatically pay the charge.

SF Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, the man behind getting the money for the study, said he thinks “it's inevitable that there will be some kind of congestion charging in San Francisco and the top 20 cities in the country."

The study is expected to take 18 to 24 months.
