No Escaping Karma For Maryland Drivers

burntgatso.jpg

Why fight stereotypes when they're grounded in truth? In this case we're talking about the drivers we love to hate, people with Maryland license plates who have no manners, use their horns too much, block the box, speed and otherwise drive like shit.

Do you get the idea we would rather Maryland drivers keep to their side of the Potomac?

Well, the District of Columbia loves Maryland drivers. According to this Washington Times article, 64% of tickets issued by impartial robo-cameras were to folks from Maryland, thereby proving that they speed and ignore traffic signals when they turn red. Only 20% of the tickets went to DC residents, with a scant 9% going to sons and daughters of Virginia. Tourists got hit for the rest.

D.C. collected $2.8 million in fines in February, which sounds like a lot but it appears the faceless enforcement plan is working as speeding tickets are going down since the cameras were installed in 2001.

Now that we've had some fun, though, it is only fair to note that it appears about two-thirds of the District's cameras guard the border between them and Maryland like mute sentinels against the invading hordes. And we only know this because we actually touched the real, physical newspaper, which included a mapical graphic of the camera's locations.

Above photo is from a UK site that has a gallery of vandalized speed cameras, collected with such obsession that we're sure the cops have asked them a question of two. It appears that in some cases a tire is hoisted atop the camera and lit on fire, probably with something flammable to juice the process.
