Ford Hybrid Patrol Coming to Alexandria, VA [My Home Town]

This Wednesday and Thursday, November 2 & 3, Ford is teaming up with the Alexandria Police Department to give them a look at their new Mercury Mariner Hybrid and to hand out $25 gas cards to an unsuspecting public.

On Wednesday, the APD officers will get a mini-seminar on how to drive their cruisers -- mostly Crown Victorias -- for greater fuel economy.

APD knows from gas price pain -- the department purchased 180,884 gallons in 2005 for its 183 cruisers that have been driven 1,716,637 miles. With gas prices in the Washington-DC area averaging $2.48, the department's 2006 fuel budget is projected to reach $1.5 million, as much as $500,000 more than last year.

Following the short how-to, APDers will get a look at the new Mariner hybrid and participate in a fuel-economy challenge aganist one another -- and the winner will be entered to win a brand-new Mariner Hybrid for his/her department against other police agencies across the country.

The rest of the day, Ford and APD will be giving out $25 BP gas cards. From 11 to 11:30 a.m., they'll be giving them out to people who show up at the BP station at 6540 Edsall Road in Alexandria; the rest of the day they'll be cruising around looking for people guilty of using fuel efficient driving habits -- and give them a $25 BP gas card as well.

Thursday will follow the same routine for consumers with the free $25 gas cards -- first at the BP station at 5001 Connecticut Ave. in the District, then out for a similar cruise.
