Overall the 2009 Dodge Journey is fairly unremarkable to drive. It struggles up hills even when not loaded down with passengers or cargo. The six-speed automatic transmission perpetually juggles among 4th, 5th and 6th gears just to keep up with traffic and there’s not much road feel transmitted through its blocky steering wheel. The brakes feel mushy, similar to stepping on a Nerf ball and the braking distances were similarly only so-so.
The Journey’s suspension does a pretty good job of soaking up bumps and road and wind noise are kept reasonably in check. With the interior, most of the plastics look and feel a bit cheap. For families with one or two children there is more than enough room in the first two rows while legroom was sufficient up front for tall adults. Unfortunately, all the seats feel hard and flat. What the Journey does seem to very well, though, is store things.
